Religion & Math/Science never seem to agree. If you have been to a different part of the world like Dhaka or Mumbai and have seen the mass of people that are literally on top of each other, one might have a different opinion. The three things that keep population in check famine, war, and disease. We have messed with all three, medications keep people from dying, we ship food to famine stricken areas, and thanks to the institutions like the United Nations we attempt to maintain a status quo.
Here's another fat glutton who doesn't believe that over a billion people suffering malnutrition right now is a problem!
Fool, Ehrlich wasn't wrong. What we have done in the 40 years since Ehrlich and the Club of Rome conference, is to find ways to consume a greater percentage of the Earth's resources....that is all. Decline in birth rates doesn't compensate for decline in resources.
How would Fat Pig feel if he was one of the unfortunate souls who will be born near the end of this century?
Overpopulation is not something that will take a toll on our resources. Technology will develop enough to ensure we can produce enough. We already do produce enough to support our global population. The problem is global access of the resources, one which we already have. With exponential population growth, that problem becomes even harder to solve. This problem is too political to solve without a major reform on global policy. Like you said, you can help Uganda, but China is another story.
The developed world doesn't need to increase its population, but the developing world needs to decrease it. The earth would be a much better place if there were fewer people: Better quality of life, less poverty and unemployment, more nature and more space for humans and animals (yes, they also have the right to live).
And yes, if we spent more on education, not only would we solve energy and pollution, we would cure diseases, get peace in the middle east, you name it. YES WE CAN!!
Well you don't need a machine to do both. The machine that cleans up the environment and has been here for hundreds of millions of years is called a tree. The machines that create unlimited energy not alone, but all together are called nuclear, wind, geothermal, solar, and hydroelectric. We do not invest enough in these unlimited clean sources because of the oil and coal lobbies.
Haha, this guy has no FUCKING clue. Is Jesus going to give us more oil? What happens when we run out? Explain that, or maybe you're too busy thinking about a hypothetical asteroid.
Overpopulation is BS. The more people we have and educate, the more solutions to our problems we'll think of. The asteroid is the real threat. If we spent to stop the elimination of all non rat vertebrates what we spend to stop a few people from getting blown up we would have this problem solved. 911 was a freak outlier and even with 911 you're still more likely to be struck by lightning that killed by a terrorist. However, there's a 100% chance that Earth will be hit by a huge space rock.
@Bill1275w Yeah because look at how much the educated people are helping the world today. Were in a downward spiral and idiots like you are the reason.
@cubanoblanco Like I said, if we spent on education what we do on war, any overpopulation related problems could be solved. Plenty of room in space. If you are certain that the worlds biggest problem is overpopulation, then you're part of the problem and you know what to do. Tell jeebus I said hi.
@Bill1275w Please enlighten me, if we spend more on education would someone invent a magical machine that gives us unlimited energy and reverses pollution? That's an optimistic theory. However, we live in reality, not fantasy land. Why don't you use scientific facts and common sense instead of spouting off baseless theories and sophomoric arguments.
Even if the world could support 20 billion, or 50 billion or 100 billion people, it just means people would have to start having very small or no families when that limit is reached. And with exponential growth we could see 100 billion in less than 200 years. The age of population growth is over, time for population stabilization now.
All my life I have heard from Christians that the end is near, Jesus is going to part the clouds and take all the faithful servants home in heavenly glory. It seems every Christian you ask believes that the events of revelation are either already taking place or are just around the corner. In fact, even the disciples believed that Jesus would return during their lifetimes. Every generation of Christians have belived this, but we're still waiting. My money on math before mysticism any day.
The world population consumes its primary non renewable resource (oil) faster than it replaces it. As a result the current population cannot be maintained long term.i.e. we ARE overpopulated. The only ethical reaction to this is for everyone to choose volunatrily to use contaception until a sustainable level is reached and everyone is out of poverty. Population growth increases poverty while technology increases consumption per capita.
You do know that North and South America could sustain a population of 20 billion if everyone used their .514 acres right? We only have 7billion people now in the whole world.
Stop pretending like you know what you are talking about. Do you know where petrolium comes from? Do you know how much is under the ground?
Employing a divice that promotes sexual promiscuity helps to reduce STDs? Good thinking there. Tell that the those now infected with HPV who thought they were practicing "safe sex".
In my country teenagers are vaccinated against HPV, you seem to be behind. Sex is a fact of life, condoms reduce unwanted pregnancy and STD's-fact. Thats why even the pope now agrees that condoms are ok.
You assume that condom use is only by people looking for many partners, waht about those in long term relationships? Oops I meant vatican official, not pope; Cardinal Georges Cottier stated that there is justification to use condoms under certain circumstances, like fighting AIDS because the AIDS threat is so immediate. the pope however is as unscientific as always and still thinks condoms increase AIDS.
You should just go jump off of a bridge. I'm pretty sure that if your "Pope" said so, you'd do it anyway. So just cut out the middleman and get to it already.
So you are willing to pump women full of more chemicals to enable a disordered sex drive? That's pretty environmental of you.
Pump em full of chemicals to cause their natural fertility to malfunction. Put up artificial barriers to frustrate the natural process of fertility and then pump em again with vaccines that are only necessary when you are having sex with multiple partners. Man you do not live as natural a life style as you pretend to.
condoms protect against HPV AIDS and many more, are you denying that condoms reduce AIDS?
Women/men can chose to use contraception and when to have kids. You want to deny them that freedom. Having kids without several years between pregnancies is harmful to health.
The teachers didn't make them have sex and they would have had sex with or without the condoms. Better to stop unplanned teenage pregnancy which can be harmful to all.
Agreed about sex ed for teens. This video is a good example of why we can't have a rational discussion of the future of the planet with people who firmly believe that the Apocalypse is right around the corner. In order to save the biosphere we need to have long-range planning about population growth and consumption levels.
No puzzle, production from the reservoir has dropped steadily since 1996.
The source of additional oil was analyzed as migrating through faults from deeper and older formations below of probable Jurassic and Early Cretaceous age. The oil contains biomarkers closely related to other very old oils and was long trapped in deep formations.
It can't just be any old land, it has to be fertile and there needs to be an adequate supply of water and minerals plus enough to leave fallow areas plus be the right temperature, location and climate for the crops. If you want intensive agriculture you need oil too. We are using oil faster than it is being replaced. Civilisations that use their primary reosurce faster than they consume it tend to collapse e.g. easter island, pitcairn, henderson island.
What happens when you introduce hydroponic technology? What if you had a hydroponic greenhouse heated by a rocket stove. Couldn't you grow oranges in the middle of snowy winter?
You are making the same mistake Malthus and Ehrlich made. You are not accounting for advances in food production.
hydroponic requires artificila fertilisers from oil and minerals from soil. Food production increases have been down to oil intensive technology which incidentally have increased consumption of oil and water, not decreased it. I compost some of my leaves but it depends on the tree whether its suitable for composting. I'm trying to avoid acidification of the soil:)
It is unethical to kill humans shark. Just because you want to live like a pig doesn't mean that other humans have to die. There is pleanty of earth to sustain selfish pigs like you so quit being such an inhuman jack ass.
It is not ethical for mankind to mutilate the body. It is ethical for man to develop self control with regard to sex. If the population is growing at an unnatural rate, it is because of the disordered sex drive that pornogrophy promotes.
I didn't suggest killing anyone. Using a condom isn't murder nor is it unethical, if it was you would see people having a funeral every time they used one. What is selfish about wanting to reduce poverty. You place the selfish right of people to have so many kids that everyone suffers above that of the population as a whole. Would you prefer wars over water because people couldn't see that human population growth cannot go on forever on a finite planet! I bet you comsume more than me!
Big families are naturally inclined to effectively use their resources. I know how many toilet paper squares I use when I go to the bathroom for goodness sake. Can't afford to glut. And all the food purchased is eaten. Our cars last longer and we are anal about good gas mileage.
Big families use more resources than small families. Rich families use more resources than poor families. A rich large family is a nightmare for the sustainability of the population.
If you don't care about the very long term, then overpopulation will not affect you that much, as an American.
In many parts of the world, people are ALREADY feeling the pains of overpopulation. Just because they have "something" to eat doesn't mean they are enjoying the same level of quality of life as Americans.
Well, what part of the world do you live in because you should concern yourself with the things you can change.

1) We can only sustain large numbers with artificial fertilisers made from oil.
2) I am a scientist with credentials in the sustainability and agricultural field so please don't be patronising, thanks:)
3) Soil becomes less fertile if it isn't left fallow so up to four times fertile land is needed than that required for one years crop.
3) Petroleum originally comes from dead sea algae and animals that were trapped in sediments millions of years ago, we have finite amounts of it.
