  • Read "Breaking the Spell" by Dan Dennett. Then read "The Genealogy of Morality" by Nietzsche. In the first, you will learn that parasites called "memes" evolve consecutively with human beings (memes are things like morality and religion). In the second, you will learn that we have the power to control these memes.

  • @YountFilm

I will def check out these books you have recommended after I finish reading Robert Sapolky book on stress.

  • @YountFilm "BS" you'll never eradicate these 'memes' so it becomes a cases of become one or whinge/whine and be a VICTIM of life.

  • I completely agree with this women than dawkins hippy, utopian, big rave world hopes.WE all need to THINK FOR OURSELVES.A good watch is "what happened to our dreams_episodes 123"

  • I think you are confusing the collective moral landscape with that of one individual. Hitchens & Dawkins meant their comment to be pertained to the collective. Yes there are people that do bad thing but that is because the system allows them to do that within some upper and lower limits.

If our global village was shrunk to a small hunter-gatherer tribe, these bounds would be more restrictive. However, societies that propagate and survive are ones that uphold a good, 'collective' morality.

  • It seems to me that you view the world way too naive; as if there might be some kind of objective justice system that is omni-prevalent (is that a word?), but is not doing it's job properly right now. To me this automatically brings to mind the subject of morality in religion, meaning some omnipotent judge/deity. Things aren't that simple I'm afraid. If you really take a close look at how evolution can explain morality you'ld see that this fits much better in a realistic world view.

  • There are people who may be categorized as sociopaths -- people who lack moral senses such as empathy and reciprocity. While science has yet to determine how much of this phenomena is genetic and how much is upbringing, there are people who seem to be born without moral qualms. This doesn't necessarily mean that evolution did not produce morality. Evolution allows the possibility that some people do not express genetic traits like blond hair, fear of heights and, yes, even morality.

  • (Continued) Most people without morals don't survive. For example, amoral people are killed by others or they kill people who could have helped them survive. So amorality is not easily passed on to future generations, but it could happen; people like Madoff certainly live long enough to have offspring.

The evolution of morality doesn't imply that people are always moral. It simply means that people are born expressing morality *most of the time.*

  • You know what is so funny about this video and it is ironic, Margarita is talking about criminals getting caught and then 30 seconds in the video you hear actual police sirens going down the street. Hopefully the police are on the way to arrest the bankers who just gave themselves bonuses with tax-payers money.

  • The power of accurate observation is commonly called cynicism by those who have not got it. - George Bernard Shaw The most essential gift for a good writer is a built-in, shockproof shit detector. - Ernest Hemingway
