He also said that there is only one time he could tell someone his name, I think it must be the marriage. So WTF? Maybe she was a robot as well and he looked into her eye and he let her die. Love. I'm not a big River fan, but that's an improvement from when she first showed up in Series 4 -- I honestly couldn't stand her. I mean, I didn't know Eleven yet, and it was clear that she and Ten were NOT compatible, and her knowledge of the Doctor was scaring him, and it just bugged the crap out of me. Now I kind of like her... But I still think Donna's the best companion and River just can't compare. Still, this video almost broke my heart. Funny how that works, ain't it?

I don't actually like how Moffat wrote her physical 'death'... especially when you get to know her, she is essentially condemn to spend the rest of existence inside a computer in a library that no one will ever visit anymore... considering how she once have all time & space, actual death seem more kind.

I have a question. In the library what was the point of saving a copy of River's memories. It didn't save her she died. Saving a copy of her memories wouldn't benefit River at all.
@limetang it didn't save her body. but at least it saved a part of her. if you had a choice between letting someone you love die completely or atleast saving a part of them, wouldn't you opt for the latter? to know that in some world, whether virtual or not, can have them live a happy life and that they're not completely dead

Good Lord, I've loved this show since I was six in 1968, but you can't figure any of it out because IT'S A CHILDREN'S PROGRAMME! None of it works as adult Sci Fi, it's a kid's show that's good enough for adults to still enjoy, but it isn't even internally consistent. They just make it up and finish with another Deus ex Machina. They have absolutley ludicrous paradoxes that cannot be explained away except to the mind of a ten year old (escaping from the Pandorica, for example).

i dont quite understand how the River prancing back into her cell who then see's Rory knows she won't be there until the very end since i am guessing the one that shows up at Demon's Run is older and she can't really know what she's going to do in the future. Or well yes she can because this is a time travel show and River is awesome and maybe she just changes after Rory leaves and uses the time vortex manipulator to show up later. @hannah1111100 he doesnt know whether or not the Tennant Incarnation is really the 10th or 12th incarnation. she doesnt know what order his incarnations are in. like she says, "spoilers." if he revealed that, that would make it way to easy for her. lets say she meets the 12th doctor. to her. she doesnt know if thats before or after the 11th. unless she was there when he regenerated, then theres no way for her to know.

I hope this doesn't mean that River won't show up next season. She's definitely my favorite character, and I'd love to have her around even though a lot of the mystery surrounding her has been revealed already.

@GrahamNificent the fact that they meet in the wrong order is irrevelent. The end of RIVER's time frame is at the library. Her brain is still inside the computer and the doctor might be able to find a sort of physical body for her to use. Anything is possible in Doctor Who.

What I mean is that The Doctor may not *need* to get her a new body, because we have no idea how many events take place between the Crash of the Byzantium and the Library. (From River's point of view, that is.) There could be months or years of her life left between those two events, so it's quite possible that next season could still be spent with a pre-Library version of River.

Maybe at that point she had resigned herself to inevitable fact that she would one day run into the Doctor who had never known her; she knew it was coming, she just didn't want to really face that.

@rustybuckingham It was never told. We don't even know it was 10 or 11 during this second-to last meeting. Moffat told in an interview that River is speaking poetically when she says they are going opposite in there timeline. So this could be Eleven who gave her the screwdriver. But he also told somewhere that River met Ten during his travels in the specials. I like to interpret that it was Eleven, when he was preparing to die at Lake Silencio. But this is just me, YMMV.

@billyharriss The Doctor narrows it down their first trip on the TARDIS was actually on their wedding day. From there, he narrows it down even further and comes to the conclusion of Melody having Human AND Time Lord DNA because of her parents, alone in one of the many rooms of the TARDIS.

@3AnimeMangaLover River can't time travel until she gets her own vortex manipulator right before the pandorica opens. All the time travel she does prior to that point has to be via the Doctor picking her up in the TARDIS or some other means. All the business about the order in which they meet seems to be a paradox - an older River meets the youngest Doctor, and from there on out he's already met her, but in the wrong order. She meets him as Mels when for him they've already had adventures.

question: why did she ask about the bysantium (or however it's spelled), she knew he hadn't done that jet for there it's the 11th doctor! she was there with him! so why did she have to ask? or does she come back somehow and this is not the end of her timeline?

@hannah1111100 he doesnt know whether or not the Tennant Incarnation is really the 10th or 12th incarnation. she doesnt know what order his incarnations are in. like she says, "spoilers." if he revealed that, that would make it way to easy for her. lets say she meets the 12th doctor. to her. she doesnt know if thats before or after the 11th. unless she was there when he regenerated, then theres no way for her to know.

@TheRunedExperience i was just thinking: he told her his name and he said he could only do that at one point, right? it wasn't the wedding (at least if he didn't apply rule 1 to rule 1), so what else could it be? i reckon his death or maybe like her having a kid or something (i'd go for the first), so she must have seen the last doctor which is the 13th at highest. i assume that she would also have met 12 at some point in between.
maybe i'm completely wrong, i was just wondering.

@idiatico because river doesnt know what order his incarnations go in, she had no idea if tennant was before or after smith so she was trying to see if he remembered adventures in that incarnation

I hope this doesn't mean that River won't show up next season. She's definitely my favorite character, and I'd love to have her around even though a lot of the mystery surrounding her has been revealed already.

@GrahamNificent Her conscious, her soul, her brain is inside the library's computer. River just doesnt have a physical body to use. Theres still hope... I just dont know how much. As the 10th doctor quoted about his future self, "Oh, I'm good. I am very good!"

@TheRunedExperience But that is only in one time frame. The last time we saw her was right after the crash of the Byzantium. They meet in the wrong order, so we could easily see her corporeal self still.

@GrahamNificent the fact that they meet in the wrong order is irrevelent. The end of RIVER's time frame is at the library. Her brain is still inside the computer and the doctor might be able to find a sort of physical body for her to use. Anything is possible in Doctor Who.

@TheRunedExperience That was almost the exact same point I was trying to make. What I mean is that The Doctor may not *need* to get her a new body, because we have no idea how many events take place between the Crash of the Byzantium and the Library. (From River's point of view, that is.) There could be months or years of her life left between those two events, so it's quite possible that next season could still be spent with a pre-Library version of River.

@liorglik2001 Yes, that's why I think she'll be back, because we haven't seen that yet. (Although sometimes I wonder if it was the 10th Doctor that took her to the towers, because in Silence in the Library, River behaved as if she'd seen Ten before.) I just want more River forever. ;__;

@GrahamNificent she did tell him at the Crash of the Byzantium that she had pictures of all his faces. And knew that that was a fairly early meeting for him. Maybe at that point she had resigned herself to inevitable fact that she would one day run into the Doctor who had never known her; she knew it was coming, she just didn't want to really face that.

@rustybuckingham It was never told. We don't even know it was 10 or 11 during this second-to last meeting. Moffat told in an interview that River is speaking poetically when she says they are going opposite in there timeline. So this could be Eleven who gave her the screwdriver. But he also told somewhere that River met Ten during his travels in the specials. I like to interpret that it was Eleven, when he was preparing to die at Lake Silencio. But this is just me, YMMV.

@billyharriss The Doctor narrows it down their first trip on the TARDIS was actually on their wedding day. From there, he narrows it down even further and comes to the conclusion of Melody having Human AND Time Lord DNA because of her parents, alone in one of the many rooms of the TARDIS.

@billyharriss It was because Melody was conceived in the TARDIS! She had some of the Time Lord DNA from the time vortex and the TARDIS, itself!! That's what made her a Time Lord from Human parents!!

@3AnimeMangaLover River can't time travel until she gets her own vortex manipulator right before the pandorica opens. All the time travel she does prior to that point has to be via the Doctor picking her up in the TARDIS or some other means. All the business about the order in which they meet seems to be a paradox - an older River meets the youngest Doctor, and from there on out he's already met her, but in the wrong order. She meets him as Mels when for him they've already had adventures.
