this is a better version of the song. i only wish they wouldve left it like this when they recorded it for five leaves left. i like the bare instruments and vocals; none of the over-used string arrangements. dont get me wrong, the album version is still good :)
he is 3rd on my list of top 5 greatest artists. radiohead, interpol, (drake), the smiths, m83.
you're actually right about the bare instruments- the cool thing is Drake agreed, bryter layter is great but a little TOO produced, hence pink moon did away with that. I'm surprised you rate interpol up so high, but that's cool.
there's a depth to their simplicity like no modern band ive heard. its like messing with cliched sounds, only doing it right. and the lyrics are magnificently formulated. unlike most americans, i prefer to focus more on english and communication rather than "bands that rock" or over-compensation to make crappy bands sound good. btw it took me two years to get into interpol. the first album was kinda boring but i came back to it after Antics and i just found a beauty in their approach to music.
too bad the world we live in doesnt allow for full appreciation of arts such as music. "instant gratification" is the embodiment of everything americans do. fast food, itunes, freeways, television, etc.
my belief is MONEY IS THE SOURCE OF EVIL. i might be wrong. though i despise the federal reserve, what can i do to stop it? "we the people" should trust each other to fuck the establishment of economy by refusing to trade paper for goods/services. work for free. feels better than getting paid
How the hell are freeways harmful? The greatest thing behind them is that they provide many jobs for citizens for construction, maintenance, tolls, etc. iPods have had a hand in making music more acessible, and though I agree waiting until the end of the day to listen to an LP is far more satisfying, it makes music far more constant than in the past. Fast food provides foods with higher caloric values, and though they may be fatty, can helps a lower class family immensely, as they have with mine
nowhere in my comment does it say that freeways are harmful. dont put in your two cents if the machine wont take it. the problem with your opinion is that it arose from an immediate reaction to and misinterpretation of mine. i own an ipod, i work in fast food, i watch television, i drive on the freeway. my concern is that people take everything that is of value for granted AND believe that theres no time for appreciation.
but im sure building dams, "super beaver," occupies your entire day.
entirely true. although i dont consider myself a part of "we," there's not much i can do. im forced to trade money for goods and services. and until i can pull enough "money" from the system, i wont get my opinions passed through the media. the ppl in power are neither in politics, nor in the fed. theyre the performers who dont think for themselves, influenced by the evil behind the curtain. we wont be free til a smart person acts dumb to get on tv and sways the ppl's opinions.
I can absolutely tell that "you" don't go with the "we" grain. That's rare. And the people in power? They're kind of like money. They only have "power" because people are led to believe as such. Your opinions matter to those who matter.
we're on the same page, and im glad im not the only person in the world on this page. i used to feel like winston smith from 1984; and i used to wait for punishment for my thought-crimes. ever heard of the venus project?
Yes, and as the people around me create my thoughts as "wrong" I wonder what life would be if we all saw through the eyes of you and I. The pattern that the world has fallen into shields us from what else there is to be seen and reluctuantly there are people who see through the shield that blinds us.
commercial / critical success, they dont need my praise. i dont like the fact that they made so much money writiing music. i believe that to be the cause of so many current bands / artist becoming performers. as morrissey has said before, "only seals perform."
the beatles were, are, and always will be a stamp on musical history.
I'm not critic of popular music, but I just believe that because popular music has such low quality, that is why society is so wretched. Just my philosophy, but I think the Beatles were one of the better pop musicians, so they caused deep thinking (there may be exceptions). I still love Nick Drake's music, though. I rank him about 2 or 3.
thinking is different from acting. sorry if this comment is too off topic, but everybody knows there is something wrong with our community. however, instead of solving the problem, its been my experience that we make excuses for not even attempting to crack the shell. for example, "i hav to work, i hav to pay bills, i hav to think about the future."
my logic: there wont be a future if u dont put enough emphasis on the present. im doing all i can to communicate this but no one listens.
The fact that Nick had such effective outlets such as this and many of his other songs makes it even more puzzling to me as to why he took his life... Something hit him, something crushed his heart, some manner of love betrayed him... Songs of this calibre should have freed him, should have catapulted him into happy if guarded stardom...
Comcast "On Demand" is airing this video. Select "Music", "Alternative", scroll to "N. Drake" - "Way to Blue" & a video of a young Nick. Available 'til Jan. 15. Very touching. Am reading his biography - WOW!
i think what gets to me most about this clip, is that we know as this boy plays and laughs, that he will experience in the future pain and heartache. And thats what is so sad when you watch this.
There's just something about his voice that gets you at your deepest core. Why did he have to die? I sort of understand now how kids felt about Kurt Cobain, but Nick was so gentle. Hard to be believe he was an athlete in school! By now, everybody knows the story about how the late Heath Ledger was totally obsessed with this dude.
Pure magic. For anyone into Nick Drake can I suggest you read the Phil Rickman Merrily Watkins series. Nick's music weaves it's way through these evocative books.
All this argument and talk about his death. Why not just comment on the very nice and poignant video, which is much appreciated in memory of this talented man.
Ya'll are all retards. It's called wikipedia for a reason. He didn't hang himself, he overdosed on antidepressants. And yes, he did massive amounts of drugs, including shrooms and marijuana. He died when he was 26. He only sold like 10,000 records when he was alive, that's probably why you've never heard of him. He didn't tour or anything, that's why he wasn't real popular.
If you're going to call people "retards," which is offensive, then make sure you use the English language correctly. It's "really" popular, not "real" popular. If you wanted to show your ass, well done.
He's one of the most important musicians for me and I've learnt a lot from his music. A genious who explains sadness with major ideas...I've also sent some Drake covers to this site.
thank you, more of my favourite singer songwriter,'the light among the trees' i was made to love magic the frost in a broken tree,....a song to your situation..love rigomrtz
no it was o.d. of anti depressants and sleeping pills. his sister thinks nick's mindset was, "what the hell. if i die, whatever. but if i wake up tomorrow, things will be different." that's what she contends to. but i love this demo version better than the five leaves left version. it's so much more real
Hello fellow Nick Drake fans... I have a question for those of you who also know about Elliott Smith, a contemporary songwriter who died a few years ago, and who wrote songs, I think, of comparably unbearable beauty and sadness.
Am I the only who sees a funny filiation between Nick Drake and Elliott Smith? They don't have the same genre exactly, but don't you think they sound related?...
The structure's of Elliot Smiths music and the way he plays guitar and very similar to that of The Beatles and other popular music, just he is singing in a sad soft tone. Nick Drake sings in a sad soft tone BUT the structures of his songs and guitar playing is far more accomplished and as some say 'original'.
They also both sing about different things, Elliot Smiths lyrics seem more obvious, Nick Drakes seem more poetic and complex, but that depends on individual interpretation. Its far too easy to link the romanticism for their young deaths and the sad sounding songs when musically they are very different.
I'm not sure what you are searching for here when you say 'dont you think they sound related?'- perhaps you think theres a big conspiracy and Elliot Smith was infact Nick Drake coming back from the dead, but I don't personally believe that. Elliot Smith is good in his own right, so is Drake.
Are you kidding me? Did I ever write that either of them was not good in his own right? Did I ever write anything suggesting a "big conspiracy"?
Do you love youtube arguments so much that you have to create them out of thin air? I was just asking people here if they could hear the commonality between Smith and Drake.
Elliot Smith doesn't play very much like the way famous artists do and did.
Drake and Smith both have a very basic music, not as a bad thing. Soft, quiet music, and a voice. Pretty simple. That's probably a bad explanation, but I think you guys can understand what I mean.
I do see the connection, in the music and the lyrics.
good observation rather than than the usual rubbish! sometimes your too good than you can cope with an if it takes 20 years what the hell! but anybody wants to tell me they they can write or sing better or influence more people ! please ring me lol
I know nothing about guitar, as a piano player... but I wonder if his guitar style could be because he started out playing piano, and only took up guitar afterward?
wow first time ive heard of this guy, came across him by accident when i clicked on his documentry 'A Skin Too Few' and this was the openin track, had to youtube the guy to see what hes all about n hes brilliant.
It's so heartbreaking seeing the happy face of the child who would grow to be so desperately sad. I have struggled with chronic depression for over 20 years."Black Eyed Dog" made me bawl hysterically because I knew for the first time in my life that I wasn't alone. I believe Nick's death was an accident. He had just read "the Myth of Syssiphus," which is a parable for the fight against the inevitable being more important than victory. That's practically a manual for surviving depression.
"The Myth Of Syssiphus" is by Albert Camus. It should be easy to find and isn't really a difficult read. I've read some challenging books, but I think the most difficult thing I've ever read was by Stephen King (I either can't remember or have blocked out which book it was). It only takes the average smoker a couple of minutes to smoke a cigarette, but it took King about five PAGES to describe how somebody held one--now THAT's a difficult read... Hope this helps :)
Wow...never heard of this guy b4. I stumbled across his music today just surfing YouTube and sampling others preferences...Nick is the best I have heard in a while. Did know about the"connection" all are talking about.
and arnt you glad you did, ive been listening to his music for years but never knew who or what he was, i stumbled less then 24 hours ago and its like watching my young life flash before my eyes and its wonderful
What with all these heath ledger connections, I do hope nick doesnt become more famous for his possible suicide than his music. That would be a shame.
I agree. I doubt it though. I've read a lot of comments mentioning how they were grateful that Heath drew attention to such an amazing artist and how they wish Nick was more well known too. I wish he was more well known before he passed too, but I think it matters more that people actually appreciate his music (hopefully he did too) more than anything.
So there is living footage of Nick after all...........So sublime to place it at the end of the clip. Thankyou. and may i say what a wonderful rendition of this beautiful song. You are behind this work Gabrielle and your love for your brother and family is clearly evident.
That is the most astounding thing; just the voice and piano and it's so intimate and poignant. I've only ever heard the version with strings but this tops that one. Thanks blackeyeddonkey you've made my week. I'd be intersted to know if anyone else has found the incredibly moving 'Broken Fingers' by Sam Baker, that'll make you well up too.....
Lesson learned. Those of you that have lil ones....sinful if you don't take pictures at every second!!!!!! it passes so fast

what's the time signature of this one?

Sounds like a very slow 2/4, played very freely with lots of breaks and pauses.
Probably my favourite Nick Drake song. Never heard this version before. Brilliant.

4/4. It's not 2/4

What with all these heath ledger connections, I do hope nick doesnt become more famous for his possible suicide than his music. That would be a shame.
mrspester 4 years ago 3

Excuse my last statement.
Their lives are much more important than their work.

nick was heath ledger's hero, and mine as well...tragic souls leave this earth early but leave behind a gift...

It's a shame that there is no known video of Nick performing.

A human life is such a strong/fragile thing.
The unwritten future ahead of the young Drake. The sensitive child who life awaits as an adult.
The silences that speak louder than words, and are music.
A revelingly misterious video. From Argentina,a smile and a tear
to The Drakes.

Love and Peace.

That him throughout. Those are home movies. You can see in the face that it is really him, as a child.

It can't help but make me cry, especially with the video. This is proper music and proper talent. Thanks for posting.

beautiful music and family home movies. i'm sure his mother cried when she watched this.
