I LOVE the fact that DeNiro chose to be a dedicated actor and not a celebrity. He is cognizant of the residual celebrity he has and choses to take stock in it only when he feels compelled to do so.

This man is an all-around actor with classic dramas, comedies a couple horror pics and some animation on his resume.

A lot of celebrities and actors like to put upon themselves an image that makes it look like they aren't that invested in fame and glory, but you can tell they are. Like Clooney. But Deniro has this amazing, pure quality to him. A real professional. All he cares about is the films. Interviews, fame, press conferences...it's all on the side for him. A class act all the way.

He couldn't have won coz both Dustin Hoffmann(1989) and Daniel Day Lewis (1990) had already won oscars for portraying ill/handicaped/mentally challenged personnes.Dustin in RAIN MAN and Daniel in MY LEFT FOOT so the academy awards didn't want people to think that all actors who portray an ill personne must definitely win an oscar.

De Niro is a born actor. I mean, he goes to any extent until he gets satisfied with his work, no matter how hard it is. Check out Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, The Deer Hunter, Raging Bull, this one and Casino. Even in Goodfellas, though he was not lead, after you finish watching movie, his character, Jimmy, will have the maximum impact on you. Oh man, he is the best.
