The fact that Prime Minister Churchill was voted out of office after the War is very sad. His role as "Leader of the Opposition" was a horrible disappointment after all that he did for the British Empire. I have visited Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri and saw the Churchill museum. His "Iron Curtain" speech was very insightful and still one of the finest speeches of all time.
Churchill would be proud of the EU. .. god bless him, and yet people always ignored him.. till it suited them. shame on politics, for vested interests.
I'm not so sure considering the financial and security shape in which too many European countries are due to many only half competent or completely incompetent leaders in Europe. A new person like Churchill and Ronald Wilson Reagan is needed to be in power (or even better many more of them than just one). The challenges ahead unfortunately not easy to master but rather hard.
@LKSPR13 the EU is not democratic, they made 5 referendums on switzerland,2 on ireland and many others untill countries accepted them, they make censorship laws as "hate speech" and other non-sense,you got some unelected officials governing all of us,they want to bring Turkey into europe and further the islamic invasion of our continent with millions of turks/turkish neighbours bcs of weak fronteers coming in.The EU started out as nice project, then it was hijacked by USSR and internationalists.
@LKSPR13 basically if you disagree with multiculturalism, immigration, destruction of your cultural and racial heritage or any of those subjects you can be sent to jail for "hate speech","racist offenses" and other pseudo-crimes,those things are not really crimes, they are opinions criminalized today by our elites, many people are in jail by those "crimes",as well as holocaust denial(another pseudo crime, believing in it or not),publishing proibited books may also send you to jail, they are dictators.
@LKSPR13 you should also check the accidents of nigel farage(a known anti-EU guy) on his airplane,of polish president who had a contrary agenda to EU,you should check recent sanctions on Hungaria because EU can't tolerate democracy or self determination of other peoples, check nigel farage and vladimir bukovsky about the EU,they know alot about it,expecially vladimir bukovsky.
@NamVetBuck Ironically, the neutrition received by the British working classes under rationing was better than it had been before the war, because food was cheap and what was available was distributed on an egalitarian basis. Attlee did stand up to Stalin! Under Attlee, Britain participated in running the Berlin Blockade, it helped to organize NATO and it participated in the Korean War. Attlee was great man TOO!
@NamVetBuck Nonsense! As Churchill's Deputy throughout the war, Attlee's saw that decisions were made that Churchill was too busy, too distracted or too lazy to make. Attlee was a first rate man and a fine Prime Minister. The Army Educational Service was riddled with left leaning, bright, young, working class blokes. Their job was to maintain morale and motivation; an their influence on a played a huge part in the Army's voting for Labour.
@mc0558 You seem to forget a couple of things ...Britain was damned near starvation under Atlee and Labour after the war. And you sure as hell didn't see Atlee standing up to Stalin like old Winnie did ! As for your description of those " bright blokes" , left leaning says they weren't that bright to start with. You can hardly say Winnie was "lazy"...winning the war was in no way a slacker's job !
@NamVetBuck I don't forget anything; neither do I disparage Churchill! I say that Attlee was a considerable person too. He made Churchill PM (because he would not accept Churchill); he supported Churchill against Halifax; he was a good deputy to C during the war. Attlee created the British welfare state, which I liked; you don't. He opposed Stalin's in Eastern Europe and fought the Korea War. He helped found NATO. So if you wish to dabble in British history, give Attlee his due!
@NamVetBuck As soon as the war ended, Truman stopped Lend Lease. Food supplies to Britain stopped. 1947-48 were worse food-wise than at any time in the war. Then we had the Italian and French elections in which the Communists did very well, and the US suddenly made an about turn--we had the Marshall Plan. This was followed by the Berlin Blockade and the formation of NATO. Now the Americans needed us as allies against the USSR and food poured into Britain. That is why the Attle years were tough!
