Oh, and for those of you who think that this makes the game too dark, he recently released an updated version of the mod that changes the colors but not the illumination itself. You should upload a video showing the new version Pyloneer ;) .
@Raider0001 why ? what people dont get is that, D3 looks how it looks cuz bliz wants it to look exaclty like it does, if some random guy can make the graphics darker, you think bliz cant ? ....
I am sorry but for a game 10 years in development - I am not impressed. It looks and sounds nice but those wonky animations just ruin it for me. A small dude swinging a sword and jumping on the screen - there are browser based games looking like this. And this is the second time someone from the community takes some footage and makes it look a ton lot more adequate compared to the original. C'mon Blizzard, is that really the best you got?
OMFG ... STOP FREAKING SWITHCING BACK AND FORTH BETWEEN VANILLA AND THE FILTER !!! ... it's confusing as all hell -.-
Let me at least look at the filter FOR A WHOLE 10 SECONDS before i make a oppinion. I know how the vanilla looks, i dont need a comparison every 0.5 seconds !
You cant do anything about it now ... but please mate, in the future, stop doing this shit.
As for the small glimpses i saw of the filter, it looks good.
@Pyloneer Filter looks great and would love to try it out! But.... Any way to switch the key for activation to something other than "Pause"? I'm using a Razer Anansi keyboard and it, unfortunately, does not have a pause key!
Hey Pyloneer, thanks for the work in porting this to D3. Are you aware of any issues with running this in Windows 7 / DX11 environments? D3 crashes when D3D9.dll is in the game root. I ran DebugDiag, and the memory dump actually points to NTDLL.dll and the D3D memory initialization seems to be looping (there are 218 pages of this single call in the memory dump analysis :-D):
@BaTz281 I don't think should be problems with dx11, because the game actually doesnt use dx11. The game does crash when I have the D3D9.dll in the root, but this seems to only happen after right after the game patches or at the first initial launch. I haven't debugged these crashes myself but atm I don't really have the time to find a solution, right now there is only workaround.
@Pyloneer I have the same issue I have done all the trouble shooting steps (updated fully, ran the game, then moved over the files and renamed the d3d9.dll ran D3 then named it back and launched diablo 3.exe) I'm win 7 x64
@Pyloneer The game was crashing, today the game looked for updates but did not download anything (it just showed the looking for updates splash screen).
Nothing I was trying before that freak coincodence helped, I have the latest gfx drivers and Directx, I even tried adding -dx9 to the command line on a shortcut to diablo 3.exe but that didn't help.
@AishaDracoGryph OH!!!! I just checked to see, and it was the mumble overlay that was conflicting with this, I just happened to not have mumble running when I was able to successfully make this work.
@AishaDracoGryph Good to hear that you found and fixed the problem. I'll add some documentation mentioning these types of conflicts so others hopefully don't run into these seemingly random crashes.
@Pyloneer I'm glad to of been able to help, I really enjoy this and I want others to be able to enjoy the advantages as well. I donated some money as well ^_^
Only thing you have to do is not set the contrast/gamma/brightness to such high lvls as most beta testers do. It ruins the graphics.. just like this mod.
That's good to know. Yet it would still of looked much better if Blizz did it from the start. There's a good reason the graphics got so much hate by fans: we don't want to see the cartoony wow style on our beloved franchise. It's a little sad, no matter what blizz says, I feel like they modified the art style for the worst, it destroyed a little part of the Diablo franchise identity.
Have you ever played wow? You'r just jumping on the bandwagon, "oh everyone says the graphics are like WoW, so that's my opinion from now on". It doesn't even come close. Even the GUI has it's own diablo style. Form your own opinion based on SOMETHING please...
interesting... a lot of mods are coming out for skyrim to make them more saturated and add color, and now people are making diablo 3 less saturated and taking away color :P I like it though, the customer can choose if they like the saturation or not :D
The filter may add some "Darkness" but the deatils are washing away + you have to strain more your eyes to see anything. Sorry, but I'm voting NO for this kind of idea. If someone like to play with this filter its fine by me. I like the original Concept from Blizzard for Diablo 3
@MisterEM01 Actually it's quite the contrary. The game without the sharpening tool is so blurry I can barely stand it. You can use this mod to make things sharper without adding the Dark effect. In-game the difference is unbelievable. The default graphics are so blurred, you actually miss a lot of the little details the put in the game in the first place! At first I said no to the mod, then I tried it in-game... Amazing
Lol, whatever dude. Played Diablo 2 plenty, but i don't see this mod making Diablo 3 look more like part 2 just by taking away every color in the game. Diablo 2 featured plenty of color and color themes, i don't get this darker fed. Jump on the bandwagon of lameness pls.
Because diablo isn't about bright rainbow colors. The game has gothic and medieval undertones. Sepia and grains improve the games atmosphere. But to each his own. Some enjoy bloomy cartoon colors.
@Dlostalone It's not just the dark grainy look that this mod offers. With the mod you can sharpen the look. The game is so blurry otherwise, it gives me nausea!
It doesn't make it look grey and drab. The colors are still there, only they are dulled a bit to make it more gritty and visceral. This isn't WoW, it's Diablo ffs.
@flashxm1@flashxm1 Yea there is, you have to open the darkd3_settings.h file in notepad. Where it says #define USE_POST_SHARPEN make sure it has two slashes at the front like "//#define USE_POST_SHARPEN" then scroll down a bit and edit the values of
#define SharpenEdge 0.2
#define Sharpen_val0 1.4
changing that example 1.4 to something lower will lessen the sharpness effect.
Hey, in the forum i saw that there are different filters, like very dark/sharp medium dark/sharp and sharp alone etc. Could you please upload a short vid of any of those settings?
@bigtimexpower Hmm, it should work, because they work for me and for another person. Maybe try a different browser? If it still doesn't work, I'll upload new alternative links soon.
It doesn't work.. Keep crashing when I run "Diablo III.exe". I tried your trick to rename the d3d9.exe to something else, then run the game, close the game, rename into d3d9.exe then rerun the game with "Diablo III.exe" but it keep crashing.
@SlayrAbraxas Yea pretty sure it will work with any game, I used something exactly (in the technical side) like this for WoW. Only thing you need to look out for is where to place the filter's files, since some games like to reference dlls from different folders. One thing though, this does not work for DirectX 10 and 11 games. Like Battlefield 3, Crysis 1 and 2, and some other newer games, unless they have a DirectX 9 setting,
porting something like this shouldn't be so hard tho.
@Pyloneer : In (watch?v=wK2px_TEnVE), can you please tell me which type of filter is it ?! I find that one is the most suitable for me. Waiting your response. Thanks! :)
@theinfinitymaster I took some screenshots from his video, ran them through my pixel shader (filter) test program and it perfectly matches the "Lesser" effect from my presets.
look in my video description for the download link
1. Please it you find a way to include this filter for "Mac OS" laptops, please post the download link in here or any one of your videos.
2. I have a suggestion: If you can make a comparison between all filters (Lesser, Medium and Normal) either through one video or several videos, that would be nice.
3. You are the first one that I subscribe to his Channel. Thanks again! :D
While the sharpening is nice, the loss of color does not appeal to me. For me, I think it will be wiser to stick with the default blurry settings as I plan to play a lot. It's more healthy for your eyes.
@saladiswhatfoodeats Uh? Blurry is healthier for your eyes?... It makes your eyes strain harder trying to focus on objects. That's what your eyes do, adjust to find sharpness, like a lens. More blur means more work for your eyes. Looking at a screen is strain enough... Besides, people have headaches from all the blur too. So if you're going to talk about health, and with a username like that, you better stop to think first...
I noticed many of the file upload links are now dead. Probably because of what happened with MegaUpload. I will try to upload them again to more reliable hosting.
@jtype001 I uploaded a new preset called "Medium effect" with what I believe is in between Normal and Lesser. Look at the updated download links area in the video info page.
@TPGodlike Unfortunately no because the D3 Mac OSX version doesn't use directx, but I play D3 on Mac OSX too and I'll see if there a way to do this for OpenGL.
@Tododialisimo I'm not sure why, but the game crashes with the "d3d9.dll" file in the folder the first time you launch the game after a patch update. To resolve this, rename "d3d9.dll" into something else, then launch the game, close the game after, then rename the dll file back to "d3d9.dll". Then to launch the game make sure you run "Diablo III.exe" and not the beta launcher (which also happens to be the link in your desktop).
Can't the same effect be achieved with FXAA injection? Newer versions of FXAA include post-processing effects (sharpness, etc.). I'm asking mostly because you can adjust FXAA settings to your liking instead of using pre-defined values.
@Pyloneer Ah, thanks for clarification. You should have mentioned this in the discussion thread on BNet forums. :) I don't think most people there even realize they could use their own settings. (Actually there's even a GUI frontend for those who don't like to edit config files).
This is great. I am so glad I stumbled across this in the D3 forums. It may not be perfect, but can easily be tweaked to ones own preferences - which may not be the same as Blizzard's (mine are not).
i'm trying right now and the effect is impresive, just the way Diablo must be played! i hope blizzard don't mess with this filter! this little thing makes me pre-order the game :) !!!
i'll give you a Gratz on making something people clearly like.
i'm personally not a fan though, since there's enough brown-grey-tan games running around in the market as-is. i want something a bit more colored like a fantasy game should be.
how much better it looks? are you people honestly watching the video? it just dulls it and makes it a little darker... this isn't diablo, this is just ugly.
Looks far to grey-ish to be enjoyable. It's not like unmodified D3 looks like my little pony or anything so you would actually need that in the first case.
Sharpness is great.. the darkness however, is perfect for outside and some area's in the dungeon.. but it's kinda hard to tell what's what in certain area's.
@filmup I'm trying to find a way to do this on mac osx as well, too bad it might not be as easy like windows and fooling directx. I turned my laptop into a hackintosh just so I could see how well the game runs, the performance is the almost the same as running it on windows.
Hey mate, could you please upload a comparisson between the sharpening effect only and the normal game? It would be great if I had a preview, thank you!
@thystevenmeister heres a picasa web album with some sharpness comparison screenshots: goo.gl / aDJYZ
(i cant seem to post links in comments so thats the short url) Make sure you choose to download each picture to see it in full size and with all the detail.
@Pyloneer Is this the entire filter? Or just the sharpness effect? It would be nice to see the something to sharpen the existing game and remove the "fuzz" similar to the "full screen glowing effect" shown in the early release of WoW.
The current blizzard art team just worked too long on hello-kitty-games. This filter makes it alot better, but still, the 3D-Models are caricatures, like prevalent in World of Warcraft. Now I'm not critizising WoW here, its graphics fits the game style, it's great. But it's just not diablo's style, and the art team obviously isn't flexible enough to get that distinction.
The harder & colder colours/lightning really brings out the classic Diablo feeling. While I was positive to the new approach at first, I really think Blizzard dropped the ball with the new art direction.
i hope that blizzard allows for these two different styles of color. this way those that want to play with this style can. i like it! i hope that BLIZZARD implements this!
You have done an incredible work here mate! This mod is not only a very nice one, but it's almost like mandatory one, the contrasts looks much better and the figures looks sharper and that would change the gameplay a little bit, you might find items easier that way, with so much color as it comes it's a little bit blurry, but with this mod the games looks perfect to me.
Looks cool...but yet I'm still not as keen on D3 as I was about four months ago. Sad really...but I guess it was inevitable that it would take the same cash cow model eventually. Still living in hope that it comes to a standalone offline (or emulated) version before I die! I'll still be watching on the side though!
I LOVE this filter, keep up the good work!
Oh, and for those of you who think that this makes the game too dark, he recently released an updated version of the mod that changes the colors but not the illumination itself. You should upload a video showing the new version Pyloneer ;) .

@jtype001 I uploaded a new preset called "Medium effect" with what I believe is in between Normal and Lesser. Look at the updated download links area in the video info page.
Pyloneer 1 month ago
@Pyloneer Looks great, much obliged sir!
jtype001 1 month ago
Lesser effect (in between the blizzard and dark look) rocks!
jtype001 1 month ago
Nice! Looks way better! you get that Diablo 1 feel to it.
G8!

I keep my eyes on this one. Currently I am not satisfied with the whole grafic-concept of this game. Yes I am in the beta.

Just a tiny difference making so much of an impact on overall atmosphere ..its insane.

will this work for mac aswell?
TPGodlike 1 month ago
@TPGodlike Unfortunately no because the D3 Mac OSX version doesn't use directx, but I play D3 on Mac OSX too and I'll see if there a way to do this for OpenGL.
Pyloneer 1 month ago
Nice work! If the models were more proportional as it was in the previous Diablo games, the graphics would have been really perfect! ;-]
Huskotabago 1 month ago
Agree with the guy who said he likes the lighter version more.
I would recommend trying it if you have a go with the normal and it doesn't ring your bells.
sonofajew 1 month ago
I must say i like the lighter version more. If game is to dark, its so boring to play after while
DiMoNico1981Swe 2 months ago
I am unable to use this. The game won't launch with the files being in the dictionary. Is it because of the new update?
Tododialisimo 2 months ago
@Tododialisimo I'm not sure why, but the game crashes with the "d3d9.dll" file in the folder the first time you launch the game after a patch update. To resolve this, rename "d3d9.dll" into something else, then launch the game, close the game after, then rename the dll file back to "d3d9.dll". Then to launch the game make sure you run "Diablo III.exe" and not the beta launcher (which also happens to be the link in your desktop).

@Pyloneer Works :) Thank you very much.

Can't the same effect be achieved with FXAA injection? Newer versions of FXAA include post-processing effects (sharpness, etc.). I'm asking mostly because you can adjust FXAA settings to your liking instead of using pre-defined values.
buhhutiux 2 months ago
@buhhutiux This is FXAA injection... edit the settings.h file to your liking.
Pyloneer 2 months ago
@Pyloneer Ah, thanks for clarification. You should have mentioned this in the discussion thread on BNet forums. :) I don't think most people there even realize they could use their own settings. (Actually there's even a GUI frontend for those who don't like to edit config files).
buhhutiux 2 months ago
This is great. I am so glad I stumbled across this in the D3 forums. It may not be perfect, but can easily be tweaked to ones own preferences - which may not be the same as Blizzard's (mine are not).

Amazing video! Can you show us screenshots of all your graphic modifications? It will be really cool for all I think. Thanks in advance.

How do you feel about D3, being a beta member? I hear a lot of nay saying. What's your view?
skittlesareyum48 2 months ago
i'm trying right now and the effect is impresive, just the way Diablo must be played! i hope blizzard don't mess with this filter! this little thing makes me pre-order the game :) !!!
RigelMoon78 2 months ago
hm i wanted to see the inventory etc. too. But still...great video, great job!
I really must say, it looks better with this 'darker filters'.
But I'll wait how the end game looks like.
Besides, I pre-ordered the Collectors Edition today from amazon.de...and I am from Austria x)
Can't wait for the awesome stuff !!

this is awesome, well done!
jimmydoonz 2 months ago
i'll give you a Gratz on making something people clearly like.
i'm personally not a fan though, since there's enough brown-grey-tan games running around in the market as-is. i want something a bit more colored like a fantasy game should be.
kukulzax17 2 months ago
VERY GOOD JOB, MAN! Seriously! (:
DomPedroFuckingII 2 months ago
how much better it looks? are you people honestly watching the video? it just dulls it and makes it a little darker... this isn't diablo, this is just ugly.
IronfistedPriest 3 months ago
Looks far to grey-ish to be enjoyable. It's not like unmodified D3 looks like my little pony or anything so you would actually need that in the first case.

COngratulations, Blizzard must see this

So you think bland colors is more Diablo?
Whatever. More power to ya.
toonami54 3 months ago
Sharpness is great.. the darkness however, is perfect for outside and some area's in the dungeon.. but it's kinda hard to tell what's what in certain area's.
prodigyx7 3 months ago
Darker colors filter is much better! With this filter it´s true diablo..!
lony208 3 months ago
Not that the original look is bad. It's just that with this filter it's THAT MUCH BETTER.

I think... I'm in love with you :D Thank you for making the game a 100 times better! ^^

i like the sharpening.. the "darkening" is a bit over the top in some dungeons but looks kinda nice most of the time.
Chuanson 3 months ago
This option should be on the official Diablo 3 game
thumbs up if u agree

HEY Blizzard art directors.. take note, this looks much better. Get your act together please. >.>

i dont like it but i think something in the middle of both would be the perfect solution.

LOVE IT - looks way better imo - i hate it when the game looks like a cartoon.
i never realized how blizzard overdid it with those sparkly effects & colors. Just which to have something like this on my mac
filmup 3 months ago 3
@filmup I'm trying to find a way to do this on mac osx as well, too bad it might not be as easy like windows and fooling directx. I turned my laptop into a hackintosh just so I could see how well the game runs, the performance is the almost the same as running it on windows.

@filmup You are an idiot. QQ

Hey mate, could you please upload a comparisson between the sharpening effect only and the normal game? It would be great if I had a preview, thank you!
thystevenmeister 3 months ago
@thystevenmeister heres a picasa web album with some sharpness comparison screenshots: goo.gl / aDJYZ
(i cant seem to post links in comments so thats the short url) Make sure you choose to download each picture to see it in full size and with all the detail.
Pyloneer 3 months ago
@Pyloneer Is this the entire filter? Or just the sharpness effect? It would be nice to see the something to sharpen the existing game and remove the "fuzz" similar to the "full screen glowing effect" shown in the early release of WoW.
billyelliotx 3 months ago
@billyelliotx the screenshot album link in the description is with the entire filter. for just sharpness go here: h t t p :// goo.gl / aDJYZ

/like hope it works on the fullversion from d3

I absolutely cannot wait to use (at least one ) of them.
EMTMF 3 months ago
Good mod. They should just release the game as with the default setting on.
daboom2006 3 months ago
The harder & colder colours/lightning really brings out the classic Diablo feeling. While I was positive to the new approach at first, I really think Blizzard dropped the ball with the new art direction.
Holammer 3 months ago
I hope you'll work on something like this when the game actually comes out.
This is absolutely necessary for me.

I think it looks fantastic! The darker look reminds me of the "Gothic" Games(dont know if you played one) and creates a really different atmosphere
FoxrainFuture 3 months ago
i hope that blizzard allows for these two different styles of color. this way those that want to play with this style can. i like it! i hope that BLIZZARD implements this!

If nothing else good work on the mod if people use it or not. I will be using it :)
surj08 3 months ago
it really looks better but i think i would be look better if the effekt collors get more redused than the normal color abuse.
xTheDeepBlue 3 months ago
You have done an incredible work here mate! This mod is not only a very nice one, but it's almost like mandatory one, the contrasts looks much better and the figures looks sharper and that would change the gameplay a little bit, you might find items easier that way, with so much color as it comes it's a little bit blurry, but with this mod the games looks perfect to me.
thystevenmeister 3 months ago
Looks cool...but yet I'm still not as keen on D3 as I was about four months ago. Sad really...but I guess it was inevitable that it would take the same cash cow model eventually. Still living in hope that it comes to a standalone offline (or emulated) version before I die! I'll still be watching on the side though!
