funny the scottish planters in ireland north & south, never understood that they have an ancient celtic heritage that goes further back than any of the norse german/english heritage they hold so dear today, we both had a true civilisations, when compared to today's english/germanic neanderthal nations, they were truly bought and sold for english gold, one day they will wake up though, and say FUCK!! :)
@MrSnackbox89 dont forget the cornish and the manx.....joke is genetically the english are mpretty much celtic...or even older first settlers....but cultured changed ;)
@3tangle3 The Celts and the Germans are genetically and culturally identical. Compare Caesar's Gallic Wars with Tacitus's Germania if you don't believe me.
@Stonegolem42 they may be genetically very similar....but culture do diverge to some point...its all realtive....they are identical compared to the culture of bacteria lol
Why bring football into it? This is about Scotland's loss of independence through the greed of some of its nobles of old. Now, thanks to the Scottish people, it is about to regain it. Luke Kelly sings Burns' words with dexterity and simple truth. I like it!

Used to love Steeleye Spans version of this until I heard Luke's version ~ Fiddlers Green must be a brighter place for Luke's presence ~ Ciaran and Ronnie too of course ~ RIP the boys.
Thanks for post ing this lovely version of a great song. Luke was a very special singer. By the way to anyone overseas, most of us lucky enough to be living on these beautiful islands are aware of what our ancestors got up to. We aren't full of hatred and get on pretty well with each other these days.
@3tangle3 scots rioted in dundee, edinburgh and glasgow as well as the highlands they didnt want the union but as the tale says bought and sold for english gold. it still continues.
@seonidh I know, what is disheartening is that so many people today dont know what went on and denials that anything bad happening. A united island isnt a bad idea......but it led to english cultural dominance (especially southern english) and other diverse local cultures not tolerated. Welsh prophecies love the idea of united island...just not one with dominance from english ;) if you get me :)
@3tangle3 i get what you mean, what happened in britain was the staging post for the british empire and the southern english dominence of 1/4 of the globe.
replace Scottish with Irish and you have the perfect song that relates to how and who has run Ireland into the ground....run by a parcel of rogues....traitors...liars...cheats....people who could not lie straight in bed.....God bless you Luke..!
You couldn't be more right mo chara! Luke was nothing if not a visionary, so he recorded this for us, knowing how we would be soon be betrayed! What happened to our Scots brothers, has happened to us too!
@gerryk32 thank you, its strange though how the peoples of these islands have been divided by war, religious sectarianism, petty squables and the like. Myself I have both scottish and irish genes as probably most people in both countries will have over the millenia of trade, marriage and movements. The last 500 years and the sectarian problems today are a drop in the ocean to the history between both peoples. We are more alike than not with a similar culture and peoples its something to be proud
@seonidh I detest sectarianism in all its forms...i love the links that us Irish people have with our Scottish,Welsh and Celtic brethren....you are dead right when you say that its something to be proud of...we are a race of people who are not easily fooled and the point you make about the weapons of mass destruction in Iraq is dead right...well done..!!!
@gerryk32 actually no its a scottish folk ballad and this is a lament about the 1745 rebellion. Its fine the way it is and a testiment to what english imprerialsim had wrothed on scotland as well as others.
@seonidh your quiet correct in that the song is about the Scottish rebellion of 1745 but i think its also about how a country can be enslaved by powerful and ruthless interests and Luke has internationlised the song in a brilliant way.....he had a happy knack of doing that.....i often wonder what would the world would be like now if the Irish, Scots and the Welsh all ganged up together and stuffed the English...!!!
@gerryk32 it did almost happen the bruce tried to oust the anglo-norman presence from ireland but failed and also bonny prince charlie wanted greater attonomy for the welsh, scots, and irish but the rebellion failed.
@seonidh More's the pity friend...our countries still suffer to this day....can i take it that you are a bit of a historian then...you seem to be extremly well informed...well done..!!
@gerryk32 yep its so sad in a group of islands as small as these the wars, opression dominance of one culture over another has been the trend and still is. Cultures dying, some including gaelic barly by the skin of its teeth over the centuries. Of course I dont blame the ordinary people for this they just live in a country where the government feeds bullshit and the people lap it up. The same thing happens today with the WMD Iraq war. I just read all points and make up my own mind. Cheers
Actually, the song was Burns' lament on the Act of Union of 1707, where "Great Britain" came into being. The "Parcel of Rogues" referred to the members of the Scots Parliament in Edinburgh, who voted to dissolve their Parliament, (and 1000 year old Scots Nation), in return for financial compensation from Westminster!
It was in that sense that the Scots People were "bought & sold, for English gold", as Burns puts it! There was never any Referendum & it was a hugely unpopular act!
@seanseamus1 Luke Kelly was a great man, there is no 'greatest' Irish man and that being said John Hume was a great man too and dedicated his life to this island.

Lukes gravel voice, along with the rattle of the banjo........ this is one of my favourite all time songs! Fantastic when poetry is brought to life in a song.
This is one of he great performances of a political protest song. Kelly brings everything. Phrasing, pitch, depth and passion. And those of us fortunate enough to hear him sing - power. The longer he is gone the greater he seems
could eny one please tell me i heard the dubiners siging a song with the words in it I AM THE LAST GREAT WHALE could eny one tell me the name of this song please
two of the greatest poems about being sold out have been sung/performed by Lukey, this one and his own For What Did The Sons' Of Roisin. Both are still true today.
Never realised this was a Robert Burns poem - made all the more powerful set to music. I think the "rogues" concerned were those members of the Scottish parliament who signed the Act of Union with England in 1707.
There was never a better singer than Luke Kelly. It's the way he caresses the lyrics, the way he injects power when the words demand it, and the way he pronounces every single word to absolute perfection. My heart still breaks for the loss of the greatest voice we may ever hear.
Man I'm pullin' on a bottle right now Jamisons is like potent golden caramel melting on my tongue and luke Kelly's voice is smooth and golden and full of soul like this whiskey good post! Slainte!
He did have a Scottish Granny. He shows true respect to this Scots song and sings it like he means it. As he does in every song he ever sang.
He was a man's a man kind of man, Irish, yes, but international and he sang with a nobility no other folk singer ever has. Celtic most deffo, Celts rule. (not in a football sense).
Only just discovered Luke Kelly after browsing You Tube for folk music. I'm off to buy some of his music. Haven't heard such a pure voice in a long time. What a singer !!!
Thats two Scottish songs i've heard Luke sing, this and 'Freedom come all ye' and I cant think of anyone who has sung them better. They are better performances than some Scots i've heard attempt! Wish I could have seen him perform live!
It's completely perfect. When Luke Kelly sings you simply have to listen. To every word, every note. Everything around you seems to fade except the singer and the song. Luke is my all time hero, and judging by the comments posted here, i'm in very good company.
Absolutly brillant. The resonance is wonderful. The diction is as clear as can be. Most definitly the definitive version. When Luke sings he takes us back in time to the event which he is singing about. We are there, Wonderful stuff.
Happy birthday, the bould Robert Burns.
