  • so addicting to try to figure out what the stomping is

  • btw... that website is joshhosler (dot) biz

  • OK...so I was on FB and my niece posted: I challenge you!

    1) Find out the song that was #1 the week you were born.

    2) Find that song on YouTube.

    3) Post that video on your wall without shame.

LOL...THIS WAS MY SONG!!! I thought oh boy...what a dud...but then I played your version... and I LOVED IT!!! Great work!

  • Ooooh! I discovered an Andy Dick right before my eyes!

  • LOL. Phil Harris did a lot of voice over work for years, he was a band leader on Jack Benny's show.

  • @bjr43

    Wow did not know that...Thanks

    hwaj5300

  • This song was used as the theme of the campy 1960's children show: "Archie and friends" produced in Canada.... It was used by a sock puppet character named "Marvin The Mouse".....and I do have fond memories of watching that show as a child.....

  • Easy..The box contains 20 kilos of Cocaine marked "Property of the Zetas"...that's why he's singing about it, he's completely high, In fact the song was originally called "Never get high...(Off the Zeta's Supply)"

  • 5 people like rebecca black

  • The thing in the box, why, it's just Cthulhu.

  • Comment removed

  • I remember this song as a kid when Phil Harris sang this in the 1951 WWII movie, "The Wild Blue Yonder". It always made me laugh! He was a real big personality and his music reflected that. I always felt that he really enjoyed himself. This is very much a '50's fun song!

  • @lafde44

Believe or not..I have an aunt who was crazy about Arthur Godfrey at the time and I knew of his version of this song first..

    Thanks for the memory

    Hwaj5300

  • thumbs up if you thought that this was baloo or lil jhon singing from disney :)

  • @TheRebelion009 it is

  • We did this at teh AC(Adventurers Club) in Disney a long time ago... We replaced the Stomp stomp stomp with Clap Clap Clap... So.. You never get rid of the... "CLAP" no matter whatcha do!

  • WHATS THE THING

  • @Gothicgirl1002

Things that make you go HUMMMMM

    Hwaj5300

  • BALOO!!!!!

  • I was expecting the Devil to tell him to get out with the Thing, too... leaving him as a ghost to wander the Earth. That's what happens in folktales.

  • @CapriUni

Now you know the devil will except all....Thanks

    Hwaj5300

  • @hwaj5300 well, here's a song (even more of an "oldie" than this one), where the Devil rejects someone: "The Farmer's Curst Wife" -- you can Google it.

But I guess, in the '50s, respectable songs didn't even mention the devil -- even though, if the devil had kicked him out, that would explain how he's here to sing the song.

  • @CapriUni

    Well I'll be D---ed.

    I never heard it

Thanks I will look for it

    Hwaj5300

  • 25+ years and...I just gotta know. What's in the BOX!

  • @GrigoriZhukov

The Thing.......Did you really think it was going to be that easy???? ( LOL )

    Thanks

    Hwaj5300

  • @hwaj5300 one could hope, yes?

  • @GrigoriZhukov That's been bugging me all my life too. Here I am almost 45 and looking on YouTube hoping someone finally had the answer. LOL I guess we'll never know. :(

  • I'd still stop and open it up.

  • @GrigoriZhukov

    Oh MY.....Help

    Thanks Hwaj5300

  • @GrigoriZhukov the doctor

  • @sukaza4meshon <3 you just made my day

  • 5 People couldn't get rid of the ! ! !

  • This song always confused me as kid. Why couldn't he put it down?

  • @SlayersAnimefangirl

Thats what I always thought o_o xD

  • LOLOLZ All the band members are always drunk in Jack Benny :D

  • Well, that was it, I'd had enough Of things that were to come And so I took it back to where I'd got it from This is what I hollered at it as it drifted past the zoo: "Get out of here, you ?!?. I've had enough of you." "Oh, get out of here, you ?!?. I've had enough of you." After that, I went back home and I sat down to read I knew from that point on just where my life would lead I was an older and wiser man, I knew what it was for But as for the ?!?, I never saw it no more. Oh, as for the ?!?,
  • Thomas O'Malley is back in his ally!

  • Great dance song.

  • I was born in 1946 and this was a real fun childhood song, for me, in the 1950's. Thanks for re-producing it in such a brilliant way !!! Puts a hop, skip and a jump into my tired old body. :-)

  • @caiteile

  • @dragonz4eva

    Thanks Much.

    Hwaj5300

    Hwaj5300

  • @hwaj5300 One could interperate this to be about missingno:

He gets excited (cause' he's a noob and picks it up)

    People are afraid of it

    it screws up his life

he can't get rid of it

Thanks Mamamurray... You must of recognized the picture (LOL)

    Thanks

    Hwaj5300

  • Four people have also found !!!s.

  • Cute video!

  • oh yeah, i had to sing this in front of my school ptso. OMFG! drives my bro nuts though.

  • i remember hearing this song,on the Dick Van Dyke show.

  • I work at Cedar Point and this song gets played in the children's area. Several of us have the idea the the box carries an STD, which back in the day would have been a VD. That would explain why no one wants it and it fits the Boom Boom Booms if you say Veneral on the first Boom and Disease on the second and third booms.

  • Del Shannon's "Runaway" was the No. 1 song the day I was born - what does that say about me? Anyway, this was one of the top hits of 1950. In fact, it was ranked as a top single as played by disk jockeys, played in juke boxes, on the British charts and even the sheet music surveys.

It was an era when innocent seasonal or novelty songs ("Rudolf, the Red-Nosed Reindeer," "I Tawt I Taw a Puddy Tat," "It's In the Book," etc. could go to No. 1.

    No more ...

  • @GregDad100

It tells me how young you are (i believe it was 61 when Shannon had this hit ....I always enjoyed novelty songs But alas you hit the nail on the head when you said ...No More

    Hwaj5300

  • @hwaj5300 I, myself, was born in 1977. I got introduced to the weirder side of music with Weird Al Yankovic's song "Eat It" but never was able to get into the wider comedy/novelty genre until 2000 when I first heard Dr. Demento (where, incidentally, I heard this song for the first time!). It saddens me that these great songs don't have the same chances that the classics did.

  • @TuxKamen

Hi ....There is hope as this was a top forty hit. Ther have been others throughout music history since .......Awwww!!!...but not enough. I have also posted " Flying Saucers if you like novelty or maybe you will like " Small Sad Sam"...Also posted

    on my site.

    Thanks Hwaj5300

  • @GregDad100 your just as old as my mum... wow!

  • i personally prefer 'monkey's paw' as the thing... 8D

  • Funny stuff, Love it.

  • @squid200

    Thanks

    Hwaj5300

  • This song was #1 on the Billboard charts on the day I was born, Nov. 30, 1950. What does that say about me?

  • @mcshellum1

Thanks It tells me you are 7 Years younger than I.....And I am Jealous .

    Thanks Hwaj5300

  • @mcshellum1 It's says you were born when there was still good music! Lucky...

  • Good effort on the video

  • @fishesdeep

    Thanks

    Hwaj5300

  • hawhaw.. I remember this song, but it was great ole Phil Harris singing it. I can't remember who!!

  • @mdhendricks50

    Glad to jog your memory

    Hwaj5300

  • I remember hearing this song 'once' on king's radio 103.3 in my area and I loved it on the spot. Took me a year to find it here though :P

  • Sweet!

I found this song in the 1951 chart @ billboardvideos.(net)

  • @999clever

That makes me 7 when it came out...Oh my

    Hwaj5300

  • LOL

  • @Michaeloll

    Thanks Mike

    Hwaj5300

  • @hwaj5300 This song is really something. :3

  • @Michaeloll

One of my favs. as a child

    Thanks

    Hwaj5300

  • Great graphics and nice, clear rendering. I have the original 78 of this, but I wanted to send it to a friend - so I sent him the URL to THIS!

I wonder if this song inspired "Thing", in the "The Addams Family" TV series. They called it "Thing" - and it too was in a BOX!

  • @morpheusatloppers

Thanks for sending this video as there are a few of them on the tube

    I am truly honored

    Thank you

    Hwaj5300

  • @morpheusatloppers Maybe, but it did inspire a Charles Addams cartoon of Uncle Fester opening a box on the beach with a look of happiness on his face as the people around him run away in horror.

  • @paddyosee

    Thanks I didn't know that

    Hwauj5300

  • Nice job on a good ol song! Thanks for posting.. we were talking about it the other day and I didnt think anyone would have it on here. Nice video also :)

  • @JLJustLeather

Hey JL....Your Welcome. You would be surprised to see what was on the tube.

And as far as the "nice Video"comment That is all I can take responsibility for,

    So again thanks

    Hwaj5300

  • Thank you for posting this gem !! Brings back great memories driving my sisters crazy by listening it over and over just for fun back in the 1960's

  • OMG this song is awesome! My dad used to play it on the guitar and we'd sing a long when I was little. Our job was the knocking for the !!!. LOL.

  • @shell6269

    Great Memories Huh????

    Hwaj5300

  • I LOVE THIS SONG.....

  • one of my favorites its up there with the rat pack

  • Thanx for the upload! I took me about 2 hours to find this song. I didn't know the name or the artist. Thats OK though, it took me about 2 months to find "Hey Goombadi" finally on YouTube. Cheers!!

  • The video was awesome and the song was fun. My favorite part was how a picture that was up for 7 seconds incited so much hate among the comments. Poor conservatives who let a pic rile them up. I feel sorry for them.

  • @melloncollieromance

Hey Thanks my man It's good to know someone else can have fun listening to MUSIC...... that is the category

    Hwaj5300

  • I like the very end of the video where there's an octopus with Chris Dodd, Hillera, omobber, Dennis Kookcinich and that Richardson guy...and the rest of the demon cats from that 2008 fascist dog race...don't touch that box, America!!...oops, we already did.

  • @XxowendanxX

    OOPs is right

  • @hwaj5300 O.B.A.M.A. = One Big Ass Mistake, America. The horns at the beginning of this song remind me of Dr. Demento - "I Want A Hippopotamus For Christmas"...dk if anyone's ever heard that one...

  • @XxowendanxX

Thanks XxwendanxX heard of Dr. Demento...But not that one ......This is from the late 50's So if I ever heard the Dr. Demento recording you are talking about.... it would remind me of " the thing " But at age 22 I can understand

    Thanks for the comment

    Hwaj5300

  • lol his music was/is awesome

  • That sound likes that animal from the jungle book!!

  • @thomasisatwin... Phil was the voice of Baloo in The Jungle Book(1967) Thomas o'Malley in the Aristocats(1970) and in Robin Hood as Little John (1973). And The Jungle Book was completed in 1966 but released in 1967 and it was the last film the Walt Disney himself worked on before he passed away on December 15th, 1966.

  • How fun - just letting my imagination go to see what the !!! is :)

  • @kira1955

    GO for it

    Hwaj5300

  • Phil Harris was an amazing vocal talent. And still an inspiration.

  • I have been looking for this video, Thank you for making it :) I especialy like the ending with all the political pictures of "Never get rid of the !!!"

  • @BCAnselmo

Let's not forget ME in the midst of all those political Pictures..

Thanks I had fun with this one

    Hwaj5300

  • This recording of ''The Thing'' by Phil Harris was no. 1 on the charts for four consecutive weeks beginning the fourth week of November 1950.

  • @PublicRadioWorldWide

Hey double thanks for the comment and for subscription

    Hwaj5300

  • Since the singer ends up in hell, it could be adapted into a Jack T. Chick comic book.

  • Thanks so much, I was looking for this to include in a tribute to my dad. He used to sing this to us back in the 50's. I'm having his ashes scattered at sea on Friday, 4/16/10, and have been trying to find things he used to like. THANKS!!!

  • Thank You SO Much for posting!!!

  • great song I heard it on Sirius-XM yesterday on there 50's channel

  • I'm thinking 50 years from now you could still hear it on the radio... Only not too frequently

    Hwaj5300

  • @msi1210 holy crap so did i

  • @skullman12

    Me Too

    Hwaj5300

  • great song I heard it on Sirius-XM yesterday there 50's channel

  • I don't think this movie was intended to be connected with the 1951 sci-fi classic "The Thing" but both this song and the movie came out about the same time more or less. Harris had such a wonderful, distinctive voice and a style that was all his. Great performer.

  • @michaeljayklein I do believe you may be right in your assumption there, but there's still no denying that the song & the classic film are most enjoyable in their own ways, even if there's no REAL connection between the two.And I wholeheartedly agree with you about Phil Harris--he was one of the best!

  • Excellent novelty song from 1952 by the guy who would later voice Baloo in 'The Jungle Book' in 1967!I wonder--does it speak of the titular creature from the movie of the same name the year before, which starred the late Kenneth Tobey?

  • could be!!

but the creature from the movie was found in a space ship crash. Food for thought though

    hwaj5300

  • Thank you for sharing this. I have been looking for it for years. My Mom and I were just talking about it a couple of weeks ago.

    Thanks again!

  • LOL! I don't know what the thing is either.

  • Amazing xxx target # Brillant

  • I heard this on the 50's station on satellite. I love it. Thanks for doing this you did a great job. The songs from this era were a lot of fun

  • So did I! Do you have ALOT, too?

  • Nice one, HWAJ

  • Comment removed

  • its a penis.

  • This is before my time but now that I know Phil Harris and The Thing will never forget it FUNNY AS HELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Good funny song. Compliments on the graphics..Nice work.

  • thanks

  • that's funny, I haven't heard this in years!

  • Our choir sang this song this year! Loved it....it's funny! I sang it around our house for days....my family even knows it now! :)

  • Your a teacher seee.....

    Hwaj5300

  • The Eighth Wonder Of The World Larry Storch

i have a parody of this song

just cop and paste it in the seach

    to listen to it

    thanks

  • The Chandler's Wife Oscar Brand

i have this song if you want to listen to it

it is a parody of this song

  • If you still don't get it, do it on the last verse, and it will all make sense

  • Hmm... ok,. Keep in mind this is a 50's "party song" and such dirty things had to be hidden in creative subtext. But if you sing this and clap loudly at the ! ! !...

    ;)

  • What the hell is the thing anyway.

    X.x

  • I don't think it really matters. A great part of this song's charm comes from the use of drumbeats in place of telling us what the thing is. This is a silly, but very clever and enjoyable novelty song. Phil Harris died in 1995 at age 91.

  • I agree bgdisbrow

    just cute

I remember this by Arthur Godfrey

    Oh my

  • i thought about that; mabye it was a gun or a severed head i dunno

the meaning of the song is that there are some things not to get involoved w/, cus it may haunt u ur whole life and end up costing u in the end

  • I loved your video of a great old song that I remember hearing on the radio when I was a kid. I did a video of the same song but your visuals were great.. My version has parts of 2 other songs before "The Thing" plays.

  • Hey Thanks DrinkingStar

I was a child myself when this great one was released I am now retired... from work (that is)

  • wheres the new song were the guy makes those little comments its more recent than this song i used to watch it in music class in like 1st grade witch was like in 2000

  • lol, great stuff

  • Sheer genius LOVE IT!!!!

  • try it with a few different syllables.

get out here with that tuna sub..

get out of here with that lemon pie

get out of here with that mickey mouse..

it might be a fun game to play with your kids, you know, fill in the blank. lots of fun and giggles around a campfiere too. see how silly you can get. play it stoned..oh wait this isnt 1976 is it?

  • ahhhh...the memorise...my grandpa used to play this for me when i was llittle

  • A retired teacher of mine played this song to us in my 6th grade class awhile ago, lol! I've been looking for this. Thanks!

  • what is the thing

  • Funny song from the past...Phil Harris was great on the American Sportsman! But the CRACKER who made this video might have to realize that BARACK OBAMA IS THE PRESIDENT NOT JEFFERSON DAVIS BUUUUUSSSSSHHH

  • I wonder what the *Boom boom boom* is

  • What the hell is the thing anyway.

    X.x

  • lol Whatever you want it to be. It can be as nice or as naughty as you want it to be! lol

  • I remember some contestants doing this song on THE GONG SHOW. Thanx for the swell !!! video.

  • I learned this from my kidsongs tape when I was a kid! hahaha. I didn't know it was a "real" song until recently...lol
