Owls love sushi! I ran brown garden twine in a zig zag pattern across my pond at ground level. It doesn't look as "nasty" as a big pond net. Has deterred the barred owls so far!
awesome video! too bad about the fish. in Hershey, PA. they have a net stretched over their outside ponds, just under the surface to keep the hawks from hunting. large rope diameter and about 6 inch spaces-don't notice it until you get close.
the way the barred owl's hoot sums with the nightingale hoot is SOO good. It sounds like music, it has some kind of rhythm and time value to it. Perhaps owls interlace or interleave their sounds to avoid being detected or to encrypt their messages to only some receivers.
the same..went to feeders. it doesn't hurt as much. the lily pads are now covering the entire pond, so i am wondering if that would deter. I've been offered some larger koi, and wondering if they would eat if if it's more than a mouthful! Your pond sounds a lot like mine.Where are YOU?
I'm in Orlando (Altamonte) and the barred owl ate my entire Koi pond in one evening's sitting. (10 fo them) Some dinner! Now I'm concerned, as I have given the pond a rest for a year and would love to replenish it. The owl has quit hovering over the pond. It is
so peaceful now, and just wondering what solution there may be without a net covering.
If there is a solution I don't know what it is. I started with Koi then big goldfish then went to stocking with dozens of tiny 1" feeder goldfish. When they get to a certain size...GULP. My owls have not been around for a while now though and some of my fish have gotten pretty big. Sorry I can't help.
So cool! I have lived in Minnesota and Wisconsin my whole life, but have relatives in Florida. We went south to visit them last year, and I was thrilled to be surrounded by those familiar barred owl calls on a walk through a city park; the same sounds I have heard in the north woods my whole life! Thanks for the great video!
I like it at 0:51 "I go- oh, wait. Not yet. . . " and repeatedly afterwards. And you are totally cool with them hunting in your pond? How many times a week do you restock the "fridge" :)
no, even night though. haha And I hope to find them roosting during the day. I start the search around 5am, before dawn, end around 10am-12pm, then continue again around 4pm. (if I'm not working). But if I'm looking at night, is there a specific place to look? For example, do I look at the edges of forsest near water? On land? Deep in the woods? Sometimes I feel the best way of finding one is having a birder with me, pointing into a tree, and saying "look! There's an owl!!" hahaha
If an owl kept eating my fish I would try and stop it somehow. The goldfish cant defend themselves, they are bright orange. Maybe I would put a grate over the water at night.
A great horned owl kept eating my freind's baby ducks. One day he saw it attaking so he attaked back with a flimsy piece of wooden siding. The owl was about three feet tall and its talons were as big as your hand. It almost maimed him! Owls are magnificent predators!
Thanks! After spotting the owl night after night I set up video cameras & a recorder by a tiny goldfish pond outside my front window. Then I import scenes and edit the video. I'm glad you enjoy them.
i wish owls came to my yard!!!!!
