I've not looked down all the comments, but the b/w movie in this is "A Kind Of Loving". Great early 60's kitchen sink drama (remade as a 10 part tv series in the early 80's).
Anyways, the 1st side of Steve McQueen is the finest opening set EVER.
Simply and Probably one of the best album ever written. melodies and lyrics are nice, strong and stunning. Verry glee, guys, seeing that there are still fans who don't forget this amazing album. Cheers
Agree. This and Bonny are heartbreaking songs. Bonny is my favourite song. I declare myself Ireland's top prefab Sprout fan. I love words and Paddy is a poet.
This song has been with me all my life. I love the album Steve McQueen. what a songwriter paddy is! how under rated were prefab spout ?oh im going to listen to cars and girls now. how sad that there best selling song was king of rock and roll? (me thinks) thank you for the post.
This song has been in my life for nearly 25 years How did he know how to write exactly how I was feeling?? Seeing Paddy and the boys back perform this at the City Hall round the time of Gunman was a truly moving experience. A song of pure genius.
I cannot but agree wholeheartedly with all the sentiements expressed here. The vast vast majority of everything else that passes for "music" just pales into insignificance in comparison with all Prefab Sprout. Fan forever
Wow... the comments posted here prove what I have always believed to be true - Sprout songs have a way of becoming woven deeply into the lives of people who have taken them to heart. If life's not complete 'til my heart's missed a beat, then Paddy's music has certainly helped make that happen. This song gets stuck in my throat every time.
hailey mills...the foreign legion...thatcher's britain...best album of the 80s? certainly a contender....along with the smiths, the fall and the pet shop boys...
Ciao a tutti.
Great great song. I remember my brother bought it on 12" vinyl. The B-sides were... um... not quite as good! Sure it was titled "Johnny Johnny" as a single. Can't believe it wasn't a massive hit, but would I still love it as much if it had been?
Now taking great pleasure in indoctrinating the next generation. The "Johnny Johnny Ooo" song will hopefully be a happy childhood memory to our kids as well. MP3 + car stereo + children = captive audience!
This song certainly used to make me feel so down whenever i try to listen to it...and it still does, after all these years! Great song from this fave band of mine!
It's funny you should type that, but this song always had a sad feel for me as well, but I don't know why (the lyrics aren't particularly sad). Maybe it's the intro's descending guitar arpreggio. ;)

Such elegant pop craftsmanship. Too bad this song didn't feature on the "Best of Prefab Sprout" VHS collection that I've had for many years.

whats wrong? a hiphop tune gets an award and sells millions while a gem of a tune like this stays here on youtube....

This comment has received too many negative votes show
The fact that you think those 2 musical genres are instrinsically opposed to each other by virtue of existing is testament to your own ignorance.

I second your opinion: The best music is ignored, neglected, forgotten, thrown into oblivion... Look at the world around: that explains why it is so.
Prefab Sprout: a treasure to be found only for those who stick to the love for gorgeus melodies, sentiment, and still enjoy beauty.

In a turbulent world out there, one sure way to switch of from reality is simply to listen to music like this.
