reading your comments while listening to this master piece makes me feel like watching opera with decent people wearing fancy clothes, talking, smiling friendly to each other, minding nothing but the beauty of the notes and the perfection of the performance
I agree this song brings back memories and if I remember it was from the 2 ronnies show and yes not a care in the world and yes the old clock is catching up but in the heart and head one is still in ones early 30,s
Having given birth to twin boys, I lay listening to this song and felt simply elated. The boys will be 23 next month and to listen to that song now brings back those memories, although tinged with sadness . Their father missed their birth due to a traumatic flight and arrival in the UK from HK. He passed away 6 years ago. He would be so proud of them now. Wow! I remember singing this song and feeling sooo happy. I'm going to learn the words, so I can sing along. ahhh!
Beautiful woman, beautiful singer, beautiful songs....... just beautiful!! Must be one of the best singers ever; such a clear and perfect voice. She's beautiful to look at and has a lovely personality. Every man should have one.
A flawless crystal clear performance by Barbara Dickson...her voice is so beautful to listen to and convey the emotion of the song....no singer has done it better..
Estimated friend, if you want to listen again this song and an endless number of successes of the love I suggest you to visit Radio MUSICA PARA MIMOS - looks for his direction URL in Google ( search Musica para Mimos in Google)-. best romantic music of all the times in Internet, is great, is very good ...!!!
@Truimphful I don't think you're odd at all, this was recorded when women were women and not the plastic Barbie Doll Look-a-likes filled with silicon and completely false like many are today.
Barbara did great with this, and later excellent with Elaine Paige in CHESS. I am fascinated by what Mike Batt did..... this, and the rest of his music is brilliant.
to the clarks,,good to be back amongst loved ones,,,im better now,,,all over her,,,moved on,,,was time of troubles,,,sorry i ipset my beloved family,,i apolagise truely,,i was hurting sooo bad,,,now back on my feet,,,gott another fun crazu lady by my side helen,,,
This song was never the hit it should have been since January February was released early to coincde with January and Caravans was withdrawn from the market (so I believe). Great singer, lovely voice and some great expressionswhen she sings.
She's still performing and just gets better and better!! Touring, recording, doing festivals. Take a look at her website.
I think she never made it really big because she's always been ambivalent about pop music. She began her career as a folk singer - that's where her heart is.
But she did make it really big! She's the biggest selling Scottish Female of all time.I agree that she was always ambivalent about the pop arena and the fame game. All those decades of concerts I attended hoping that one day she'd get back to what she did best - and now she's doing it brilliantly. Full circle indeed. She now has a job convincing the folk world that she's still the best singer in this genre. and give her the rightful crown that has been hers all along.
@3373157 I think she is a truly great singer...one of the finest this country has ever produced. However, although she was a big star she never - despite some efforts by both RSO and CBS - became an international pop artist.
I'm delighted she's returned to folk/roots/acoustic music - its fantastic she's bursting with creative energy at this stage of her life and career. She's an absolute gem.
PS: I suspect Subo is now the biggest selling Scots Female artist.
This song used to feature on an obscure German satelite channel of footage of Planet Earth from space every Friday night-Does anybody know what this channel was or have any footage to upload?
again I come back to this vocal masterclass from Dickson. the tone is so pure it touches something deep inside.. again. the speech quality voice to thin folds is effortless...this woman's vocal repiotre will go in time I am sure...pure brilliance
Wonderful, this song brings back memories of when I did not have a care in the world, now the world has changed so much and age is catching up and life is coming to a conclusion, as I listen to Barbara the clock continues to tick, and the thoughts of a emotional past run through my mind. This is a classic and will always be.
Couldn't have put it better myself. First heard this on 'The Two Ronnies' about 2000yrs ago (feels like it anyhow!) And loved it ever since. Beautiful.
@aliuk147 Thank you for that very emotional comment. I have tears in my eyes as i read this.Don't know what else to say so i wont say anything. Respect always.
Check her out, singing McCrimmons Lament - unaccompanied. Then you'll see her strength as one of Britain's greatest singers. Also her version of She Moved Thro' the Fair - no one can beat her.
Well unlike Elaine Paige - Barbara is a musician. She's a musician who was raised and is steeped in an extraordinarily rich musical culture - traditional/celtic music - which informs her best work. She is a subtle and hugely sophisticated artist who attracts a very discriminating audience. This allied to Dickson's superb voice puts her head and shoulders above competent singers like Paige who - outside of the characters she has played in musicals - has absolutely no musical identity at all.
Tell me, how is she "better"? I explained to you why I believe Dickson to be by far the most interesting and talented - noting her technical abilities as a singer - pitch, tone, unforced vibratto etc - also the rich culture of traditional music which informs her work - plus Dickson's abilities as a musician - she plays piano and guitar. As a concert artist Dickson is exceptional - unlike poor Elaine who can't string two words together to a live audience without using autocue.
I'm so grateful for such an enlightened insight into this great artist - this wonderful performer. You've got the measure of Barbara exactly. Much love. Arthur
I can play the kazoo and sing. Does that make me a better singer than other male singers who aren't musicians.
Paige and Dickson- Two different vocal types, both quite good in their respective styles. In a case like that it is only personal preferrence that makes one better than the other in a fan's mind. I prefer to enjoy both.
The beautiful tonal qualities of Dickson's voice, her virtual perfect pitch, her musicianship, her grounding in the rich traditional musical culture of her native Scotland make her a hugely more interesting and important artist than singers like Paige or Boyle. Technically and artistically Dickson is in a different league.
cannot think of an artist in 1990s or 2000s who has the quality of vocal like Barbara Dickson....the thick fold voice quality change to twang/thin fold quality with a deep tone is just unique....the only artist i have heard that had a similar tone is Dusty Springfield....Barbara..you are an unsung vocal talent of your time....
@munchiemoo Just discovered Caravan by Barbra Dickson.I so agree with your comment-a moving, clear and powerful voice-stunning.Her power is never forced and the range is astonishing. She hits such low notes and the sound retains beauty.Agree too about Dusty Springfield but my other favorites are Karen Carpenter, Agneta and Frida from Abba, Alison Moyet and, currently,Adele.
dont do it girl you're left trailing behind with the camel dung! great song all the same for the free bit not the hope part shes so good isnt she thanx for posting this one
I can remember watching her on the Two Ronnies show. I must admit she was amazing then and still is now. I also have her acting with James Bolam in the Missing Postman.
One of the greatest songs Mike Batt ever wrote, performed by the most beautiful and under-rated singer with such an awesome voice Britain has ever produced. This brings back such memories for me of how in love with her I truly was in the 80's, and this song is such a sweet heartbreaker for anyone with a memory of better times. Thank you for this wonderful clip - and God bless the gorgeous, wonderful Barbara Dickson..!!
When you think that I have heard that song over 40 yeras ago
in the movie : "Caravans" and it is the first time I see it perform alive by the singer: Barbara Dickson who I never hears of before . It is quite amasing and emotional. Thank you for posting this clip.
'I don't know where I'm going but I'm going' What kind of prescription do you need to write this line? The Caravan Theme is one of the best tunes ever written.
Barbara is one of the best singers I have ever heard. I remember seeing her live in the early 80's, I think 1982 at the Palace Theatre in Morecambe. She made this dilapidated old theatre, famed fro pantos in my early years come to life. I seem to remember she had a bit of a wardrobe malfunction with the tight leather pants before the concert. After all this time it is one of my fondest memories of live entertainment.
thanks for this upload, a classic tune,my uncle used to take me up glencoe walking when i was a kid and have this playing on way there, such good memories
Nothing doing I'm afraid.. Martin Jenner, her guitarist was one of my closest friends...and remained so right up to his unfortunate death four years ago.
I wish I could get hold of the whole video..Any ideas would be appreciated ?
Mike Batt claims that this song was all set to be a huge hit in January 1980 but that CBS deliberately took it out of the shops and stopped radio plays because they wanted Dickson's next single - January February - to be released in either Jan or Feb. Caravans was rocketing in the charts and then mysteriously stopped absolutely dead. Maybe it should be re-released??
Wow, this brings back such memories... I lived in England during that time and I remember her beautiful voice well... Thanks for sharing this video. :-)
I saw her do a show in Norwich some time ago. First song, she came on stage on her own, and just sang without any instrument backing. Absolutely awesome voice! One of the greatest female singers ever!
Thanks so much for posting this up - have been looking for it online for a while. It was one of my dad's fave songs & we had it played at his funeral. Have stuck it on my MySpace page as my little reminder! Thanks! x
I have waited for ages for this video. I assume there is a promo video made for this? I would love to see that. But anyway, thanks, I think this song is unreal and underated completely.
Thanks for uploading this. Does anyone have the video of the bbc special on Barbara which featured an acompanying video of a train travelling up through the scottish highlands?
Used to play it myself years ago - I think it's in drop D tuning - listen to the intro riff.
I think the chords I played were based around D BM EM A7 Bm
Then Chorus ...
was D G Em A7 D D G Em A7 D (LYRIC 'I don't know where I'm going but I'm going' - possibly a C major on the last word here)
Hope this is of help. Also I seem to remember there were one or two strange chords, possibly with 9ths or 6ths added in, running through the song but I can't remember what they were now)
Think I can help m8. The chords between the chorus' and verses are: D Em Eb D. The chord on the last word of the Chorus is G6. Maybe there are some more odd chords but you could get away with just straight majors/minors.
Hello - I had the same queries about this song so I asked the man himself - Troy Donockley and he explained it. The song is in D. For the second chord in the 1st line ie on the word "breaking" slide the D shape up 2. Then it's Em A7 and Bm. Try this and you'll see that the rest of the song is easy.
Caravans is unique to you Barbara:) Beautiful lyrics.............. singing in prose:)

Nothing doing I'm afraid.. Martin Jenner, her guitarist was one of my closest friends...and remained so right up to his unfortunate death four years ago.
I wish I could get hold of the whole video..Any ideas would be appreciated ?

I have had some tips on playing this from Babs' arranger and producer Troy Donackley. If you email me I will help you with the guitar music.

Hi, I am sorry to sense that you are sad about something. If it is someone you lost, I hope time helps you heal, if you are ill, I wish you well.

But anyway, thanks, I think this song is unreal and underated completely.

tasteful.
trying to find guitar chords for this song.
Can anybody help?

Used to play it myself years ago - I think it's in drop D tuning - listen to the intro riff.
I think the chords I played were based around D BM EM A7 Bm
Then Chorus ...
was D G Em A7 D D G Em A7 D (LYRIC 'I don't know where I'm going but I'm going' - possibly a C major on the last word here)
Hope this is of help. Also I seem to remember there were one or two strange chords, possibly with 9ths or 6ths added in, running through the song but I can't remember what they were now)

Hi.
Thanks for your reply, I will give it a go.
The chords look close, hope I can return the favour in the future.
Cheers.

Super rendition, but the sound is out of sync with the picture.
Barbara is always fantastic.
