Great direction, great story, great acting, great songs, but very painful era of Indian farmer where he works day and night for hardly any return.Very troubling movie if you truly understand what was exactly happening to the farmers life in this movie. Today after 60 yrs. things have not improved dramatically for many farmers, Mother Nature, Corrupt politicians, Loan shark and Greedy lenders at a time have made farmers life very miserable.

also he used to teach at Shantiniketan in late 30's.

He was a real hero in a sense.
