Zombies were made before chickens were made. Notch wanted a way for people to get feathers (this was before he thought of chickens), so he made zombies drop feathers. Now, Notch added chickens and they still drop feathers, in 1.8, Notch made it so they drop Rotten Flesh.

Kootra, the reason monsters can get you when you go to bed is maybe because you have your doors backward.

Also, just a little tip: if you make your house out of wood half-blocks instead of wood planks, at the cost of needing twice as much wood, your house will be fireproof and explosion resistant.
