@Ps3capt it's the direction of the wave, from the surfer perspective. It matters for the surfer because it defines if he is going to surf facing the wave (frontside) or with his back to the wave (backside). Also the surfer can be Regular (left foot on front) or Goofy (right foot on front), which means a Regular surfing a right wave is going frontside, while a Goofy going to the right is backside.
