The many barbs and mocking comments had for a long time been undermining his sense of dignity. He reached a tipping point in this situation. He may have even been intoxicated. But Jeff was simply demanding respect and he seemed frustrated that he was not getting the acknowledgment that was due him.

When I first saw this, I was shocked. He was so angry, confused, still hurting from dark experiences from his past. He desperately needed help, and talking about slitting his wrist at 3 years old shouldn't have been dismissed by the others. Notice no one asked him to elaborate. This wasn't the right place to share something so painful.
