As far as I know of, it doesn't. Very few games back in the Atari 2600, Colecovision, and Intellivision era had ending and were just played for points.
You're welcome. They've also changed considerably from the end of the 16-bit (consisting of the Super Nintendo, TurboGrafx-16, and Sega Genesis primarily) to the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii generation (basically the time span that I've been playing video games). From my perspective on home consoles, whilst the Sega Genesis games were sometimes scary but pretty interesting, the original Sony PlayStation was mind-blowing with its realistic-looking 3-D graphics and some rememberable titles.
The PlayStation 2 had more realism to its graphics, but games seemed to be less enjoyable (I suspect that it is from a less emphasis on gameplay and the different, darker tone the games took overall). The Wii seems to have returned some of the pleasure of playing games again, and it's a good system with the motion control, graphical, and online capabilities it has. I'm sure you've seen plenty of changes yourself!
Hmm, I guess I should have figured since it's possible to start backwards. I can figure that it ends once a single loop of all the stages have been gone through.
So the game ends after collecting all the treasures? I've known that going underground is a good way to avoid some of the rolling logs and other obstacles since I played the game when I was little (but I sometimes ended up going too far where I would hit a brick wall or lose a life from touching the scropion).
It's looks like I did make a small mistake on Harry's name. Thanks for correcting me on that, but don't mind the "Jungle Boy" portion too much, though; that was added in for reference of what I though of the adventures when I was little.
No. This footage of Pitfall comes from "A Collection of Activision Classic Games for the Atari 2600", which was available for the Sony PlayStation. I don't have a (working) PSP or that compilation, so I can't record videos of it, or any other older games, from there.
Now this is the original Activison Classic that started it all. Truly one of the most revolutionary games of all time and I feel it hasn't gotten quite as much credit as it deserves. David Crane is a genius, not just for this game but for his games in general. I read an interview with him about Pitfall and the way he describes programming Pitfall to give it "just the right feel" is wonderful.
That was a nice video. To be honest, I only played one of its sequels (Pitfall 3D for PS1; The original Atari 2600 game was included as an easter egg).

Did you take a photograph of your TV screen showing the required score and then send it to Activision headquarters to get a merit patch?

Wrong, do a search for pitfall perfect score.
The game can be completed within the 20 minute limit.

I think each tunnel screen is worth 2 screens above ground so you need to use a combination to collect all the treasures.
Seems to work as i completed this game for the 1st time this week. (25 years after i first played it)
Better late than never :)

Too many modern developers forget how fun just jumping can be in a video game.
My favorite kind of platformer is the type that actually emphasizes challenging 'platforming', instead of a bunch of gimmicks or constant fighting.
