That's me, not an employee of CERN. I'm a tourist and computer geek. I think I did well to spot the big gun thing and know (roughly) what it was. The fact that it was yellow and someone else had just told me did help.
I find this experiment truely interesting altho i dont understand a lot of it i understand the inital reason for it been carried out. I hope that when its fully running that some of physics misterys will be uncoverd as its all a learning curve and can only take us forward = D .......
E=mc² - particles have energy, therefore they must have mass, however minute an amount it may be.
After all, you and I are made of particles. If they didn't have mass then neither would me. It's not that they don't *have* mass, it's just a very very small amount per particle.
What's mind-bending is how billions upon billions of them somehow manage to stick together in certain ways to make people, animals, mountains, trees... :)
I dont undrustand wy so many people are scared as i know the only WAY this EXPERIMENT to fail is that the physics are wrong and if that happens, and we survive.
These fucking material scientists are asses. All these idiots are wasting their time for nothing. They still cannot conquer the problems of birth and death. What is the use of studying external objectives like space, physics, math, chemistry, biology etc when these morons do not know anything about subject? Whoami? Where did I come from? Where am I going? Sweating it out like asses from 9-5 and busy in sense gratification and eating shitting fucking and sleeping like dumb animals until death strikes.
hey fuck you. Why would you want to kill us!!. Cant you just leave earth alone.its true we only have 50 months to live after that.which is in 2012 some where near november the profecy
Ah, prophecy. So you're a religious nut as well as completely ignorant about physics. I can think of several reasons why we'd be better off without you, but I'd stop short of killing you. If you're so concerned about the earth being left alone, kindly stop using anything plastic, or burning fuel, or eating plants or animals. See how long you last. Good grief.
there are thousands of scientists working on this experiment,, but there are also thousands of scientists against this experiment..they say that they could potentially open up an unknown dimension..a gateway for the real hellboy..people we are in a real spiritual war,get ready for sum suprises/ science fiction is here!
And what's sad is that reading that information makes the geek in me drool. Have they set a firm date yet for when they're going to turn Switzerland into a black hole? ;)
the red parts are just pure steel support structures which will also serve as the return yoke the magnetic field lines of the solenoid will return via. its interlaced with muon detectors.
the solenoid is what you focus on at 1:00... the central silver cylinder thing. that's the world's largest superconducting magnet. at design capacity will have enough magnetic energy to melt 16 tonnes of pure gold if discharged.
:30 "its a laser... err.. big gun thing yeah.."
lol i hope hes just a janitor

I think you'll find it was a movie. Empire Strikes Back had light sabres. CERN's light show is somewhat smaller in scale.

Part of me would think it would be really cool if we *did* open up some kind of gateway! It'd be a shame to destroy Geneva in the process, though.
