Well, it would do well to remember that Judas Priest has had a very long run. They've been producing since '74 when they released Rocka Rolla and they've been innovators of heavy metal since Sad Wings of Destiny in '76. They've just moved on. Once they did all they could with one sound, they moved on to another.

In any case, punk and metal are way diverse as genres and are actually interlinked heavily in their origins, so its kind of trivial to compare which is better.

In my opinion, punk basically waters down most or all of the elements of metal, that's why I don't like it. The lyrics are usually less deep (compare most punk songs are about politics to several Metallica songs about Cthulhu or Maiden songs adapting poetry), the instrumentation is less complex, and like you've noted the clothing is less extreme.

spleen, there is no way youre saying punk is less deep than metal. Very few metal bands have any lyrical sophistication. Metallica, St Anger had to be some of the worst lyrics ever. The only metal bands that have lyrics on par with proper punk bands are bands like Isis, Opeth and Mastodon, which are all progmetal bands, Megadeth showed some intellect in their lyrics too.

The Clash or Rancid or Minor Threat or Black Flag have way more ideals than metal bands.Way more politically active.

yes, they're politically active, but the lyrics of the punk bands I've heard never go beyond personal issues or bashing the government. My favorite example is the Powerslave album by Iron Maiden. As for St. Anger, it was unlike every other Metallica album in many ways; their 80's work is what I'm referring to.
