If you guys love Bill Withers as much as I do come check out my cover of "Ain't No Sunshine", I grew up listening to Bill thanks to my parents and I absolutely love his music. I hope I did him justice but I will let you guys decide. If you enjoy it thumbs this up so someone else can check it out.
I have been listening 2 Bill Withers since I was about 6 years old when Lovely Day was released in 70's. Even at that age Bill touched my heart like no other. Once I became a teenager my mother played the albulm Justments and it blew my mind, so open so upfront and so beautiful at the same time. I am now 41 years old and watching this makes me feel so blessed that my mother introduced me 2 this talented and gifted Genius!! R.I.P MOM!!!
I recently saw the movie Soul Power and while I've always known and loved Bill Withers (can you say Lovely Day?!) .....I never considered him one of my faves like I do James Brown or the Spinners or Miriam Makeba...or that he had the same strong effect on me. HOWEVER, after seeing him perform this song (which I'd never had the privilege to hear before this) well...I think this is the most raw, honest, emotional performance of a song that I've ever seen...just him and his guitar!
Just a down to earth type of guy. A real singer/songwriter. He had the privelage of meeting many great artists of all types of art and entertainment, yet i would feel completely honored to meet him. Bill Withers, live on man!
When I first watched this, it felt like time stopped. My jaw dropped. You can't help but be mesmerised by the message, the simple chord structure (3 chords in total I think?) and the haunting, almost spiritualistic nature of his vocal delivery. Unbelievable. Absolutely convicting interpretation of this song, you can feel the hurt and see the pain as he sings. Long live BILL WITHERS! Arohanui from Aotearoa New Zealand xxx
Bill Withers singing "Hope She'll Be Happier" here was so haunting! The Zaire audience was serenely silent and listened to every whoafully growelled word. This proves just how free from self-hatred a people can be. If he had sung this song to the Showtime at The Apollo audience, there is a big chance they would have given him the hook. Our American Black audiences can be negative sometimes, as a direct result of an oppressive system that makes them unfairly critical of themselves. Malik Jubal
@setsunarose You're correct, it affected me the same way. No riffs, runs, high note screaming or ham harmonics. Just a song stylist, a virtuoso, telling us a story from his soul. No wonder that they do not perform like this today. They dont write lyrics like "Hope She'll Be Happier", many modern singers have no real concious connection to the song. Only creativity that comes from the soul, can be demonstrated and presented to the world with sincerity. Todays music is cloned. Malik Jubal
Bill withers is such good guy wat a look on life he's got, and his voice..... cANT BELIEVE he is not recognised as one of the best. Bill Withers.. mon numéro un
this movie was the most disapointing account of a live event. they picked only a few songs from the artists and spent the rest filming street musicians banging drums for 20 minutes. i fucking love bill withers and james brown and the wanted to see more.
Wow...as much as love this man's music, I think I'm MORE INTERESTED in hearing him TALK! This man is DEEP. As other have said, he's very insightful and well-spoken. Hell, he's a down-home blue collar type brotha, but he sounds like a college professor!
Bill Withers is loved and adored by millions. He is a blue collar writer and performer. His songs were always poignant. He is one of those artist that would like to hear and see today. His music is timeless. It is wonderful to see him, alive and well.
I am sure that if he released new material today Mr. Withers would go platinum without really trying. All the music that he released is so timeless. Better than some of the stuff that is out today.
Bill Withers, your artistry is incomparable. I felt it since I was a little child in Jamaica hearing that wonderful voice and those memorable lyrics coming out our radio. Live long and prosper!
so much pain, so real so emotional, a lil too real and feeling for most people, I never heard this song but I'm immediately touched. keep killin em Bill Withers.
Billy Withers appears to have discovered the fountain of youth! "Hope She'll Be Happier With Him" is one of the most touching ballads I've ever heard, a favorite of mine that I'd completely forgotten (I'm not quite as old as Bill, but I'm pushing it).
thanks for posting this although the one asking the questions was a knucklehead bill was like....what the fuck? I'm bill withers this is the best questions you can come up with?
u know what really amazed me about this interview, is that Bill Withers is 71, and he really, really looks good. I know people say that to make people feel good, but look at him. He looks like he really took good care of himself and didn't let drugs mess up his body like so many musicians do. I was in awe, and still am. Got to love Bill Withers and this movie Soul Power.
I've always liked his music but just recently have come to really "get it." I can't believe I went this long without really getting into his music.
