I have been listening 2 Bill Withers since I was about 6 years old when Lovely Day was released in 70's. Even at that age Bill touched my heart like no other. Once I became a teenager my mother played the albulm Justments and it blew my mind, so open so upfront and so beautiful at the same time. I am now 41 years old and watching this makes me feel so blessed that my mother introduced me 2 this talented and gifted Genius!! R.I.P MOM!!!

I recently saw the movie Soul Power and while I've always known and loved Bill Withers (can you say Lovely Day?!) .....I never considered him one of my faves like I do James Brown or the Spinners or Miriam Makeba...or that he had the same strong effect on me. HOWEVER, after seeing him perform this song (which I'd never had the privilege to hear before this) well...I think this is the most raw, honest, emotional performance of a song that I've ever seen...just him and his guitar!

Just a down to earth type of guy. A real singer/songwriter. He had the privelage of meeting many great artists of all types of art and entertainment, yet i would feel completely honored to meet him. Bill Withers, live on man!

When I first watched this, it felt like time stopped. My jaw dropped. You can't help but be mesmerised by the message, the simple chord structure (3 chords in total I think?) and the haunting, almost spiritualistic nature of his vocal delivery. Unbelievable. Bill Withers singing "Hope She'll Be Happier" here was so haunting! The Zaire audience was serenely silent and listened to every whoafully growelled word. This proves just how free from self-hatred a people can be. If he had sung this song to the Showtime at The Apollo audience, there is a big chance they would have given him the hook. @setsunarose You're correct, it affected me the same way. No riffs, runs, high note screaming or ham harmonics. Just a song stylist, a virtuoso, telling us a story from his soul. No wonder that they do not perform like this today. They dont write lyrics like "Hope She'll Be Happier", many modern singers have no real concious connection to the song. Only creativity that comes from the soul, can be demonstrated and presented to the world with sincerity. Todays music is cloned. Malik Jubal

this movie was the most disapointing account of a live event. they picked only a few songs from the artists and spent the rest filming street musicians banging drums for 20 minutes. i fucking love bill withers and james brown and the wanted to see more.

u know what really amazed me about this interview, is that Bill Withers is 71, and he really, really looks good. I know people say that to make people feel good, but look at him. He looks like he really took good care of himself and didn't let drugs mess up his body like so many musicians do. I was in awe, and still am. Got to love Bill Withers and this movie Soul Power.
