Well to everyone who says this is over the top and doesn't work aversion therapy does work on a certain selection of people. It has been made to look ridiculous in this video but there is plenty of evidence to suggest that it does indeed work. This is not only from my professional standpoint (i'm a doctor of Forensic and Clinical Psychology) but also from someone who has had a family member who had aversion therapy.
I'm really sceptic about the generalisation of this effect. Of course, she won't eat those things anymore when she hangs on such a machine. But the moment she gets off that machine and she takes one bite of a hamburger and she gets no shock, she will eat these things with a lot of pleasure again.
@frodo0901 i agree. i put this up mostly for it's funny factor. the documentary this is from is terrible but pretty funny to watch. it was all about american fads in the late 70's early 80's. the film was mostly shown at drive-ins and in foreign countries. it is called "this is america"
This is either staged or it is a hypnotism. Such instances of therapy are never released to the public. It's almost like they're exploiting that poor woman. But it's still pretty funny though.
The woman certainly appears to be hypnotized. A normal person would catch onto the game pretty fast -- enough that she wouldn't let a milkshake fly out of her hand.
@dknytodd Yes, yes, of course. Who hasn't licked a 9-volt? But I'm referring to a few things:
1) this woman almost certainly came to this session to get reprogrammed
2) when she does something like try to take a bite of burger, the same thing always happens, she gets shocked -- yet she seems genuinely surprised every time
3) It seems like such therapy wouldn't be very effective (which is, indeed, the hope) if the woman caught on too fast

All these leads to the hypnotism conclusion.

@dknytodd I think he means that she would catch on as to what they were doing to here, and why exactly the shock occured.
She looks completely surprised by the shock

so silly but makes perfect sense. I almost never eat junk food and it's because I have a very negative association with it.
