Humans are, in my opinion, taught fear. You go on a walk with your mom at 3 years old, and a big dog barks at you. So your mom says "Don't go pet that dog, he'll bite you."
You see a pretty coral snake, and your dad picks you up and backs away from it and says "Don't pick that snake up, its venomous."
At the same time, there is instinct involved. Looking down from a height triggers something in your head that says "Don't fall.", so you scamble to get ahold of something.
