i guarantee if pearl harbor never happen, this films will be release in the u.s......and change hollywood for good.........japanese films are movies, not the stuff from hollywood of fantasies..
when he was singing in the bar, a tear rolled over my cheek, Akira Kurosawa is one of the best, thnx god for the clasics because i can't stand for the bullshit that comes from hollywood year after year.
@parchettt Whoa!!! I stumble upon on your comment and you pretty muched summed up what I think! Hollywood is only good as a puke bucket! They make me so sick nowadays, hashing out remake after remake, especially from the Asian horror community. Kudos to you and to Kurosawa!!!
One of my MOST FAVORITE movies of all !! First time i watched, almost changed channel (black and white, subtitled, OLD, japanese...etc) but i watched it. Then I bought the movie on dvd. I see new insights every time i play the dvd.
People tell me to have been touched by soap operas or the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
I say nothing and think to myself: what idiots.
An aspect of Ikiru you might also consider is, that as well in technical aspects as lighting, music, camera and production design it does not lag behind the directing and acting.
It is still hard for me to believe, but the greatness of art does in general not correspond to how much people it will attract. Well, its ars gratia artis then.
Shouldn't call someone an idiot because they were touched by The Lord of the Rings and you weren't. LOTR is full of character development, friendships, and fighting for what you love. Yes, it's in a fantasy world but they still deal with the same emotional turmiol as us. Sorry to rabble, but it was hard to see someone group LOTR and soap operas together. I'm all about rooting against what's popular, but there's a reason why Tolkein's legacy lives on, and maybe Peter Jackson's will as well
people can be touched by different things. you don't have to be an idiot to be touched by lotr. you sound like an asshole. i bet you judge people by what kind of music they listen to too.
My list got outdated pretty fast: "It's a wonderful life" went to #1, the first movie to make me cry :) . Mr Smith is also an utter masterpiece, like all other Capra's i've seen! Anyway, i'd added also Elephant Man and Shawshank Redemption.
We can do a list of great touching films/moments, in which 'd add:
It's a Wonderful Life, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Ikiru, Elephant Man, One flew over the cuckoo's nest, Shawshank, Midnight Cowboy, an many more to come!
Thank you for your contribution, you've got an excellent taste for movies!
And, before i forget, Ikiru is one of the GREATEST movies EVER! Kurosawa is my favorite director, along with Capra, of course, and Lynch.
I have only seen Rashomon, Kagemusha, and High and Low. I own Dreams and Seven Samurai ... but I somehow overlooked such a powerful film. I can't find this though. This looks like a truly beautiful film.
I recently purchased the Criterion DVD of "Ikiru" and needless to say, it may be the most touching and beautiful film I have ever seen. I have yet to cry during a film, but this turned me into a sniveling stuffed thing. The beginning when he is remembering his son as a child just destroys me... And the swingset scene ... no ... I cry now ...
The Criterion Collection has remastered this film and can now be purchased at the best possible quality. Check out their site or go to any decent Japanese video store.
The only version I have of this film is the BFI videotape, I'm ashamed to say. I'm going to pick up the Criterion release next chance I get. One of the best movies ever made.
beautiful, moving. i don't think you can appreciate the movie with this trailer (even though it shows some integral scenes), but then again, the movie is pretty hard to find.
Still my favorite movie of all time.

Never has a film made me cry so hard, as Ikiru. Even watching this trailer makes me swell up in tears.
I feel that everyone in this day and age needs to stop being so greedy and selfish and ask themselves what it means, to live.

100 Most touching film moments (continue the list if you know any):
1. Ikiru - the whole film
2. One Flew over the cuckoo's nest - ending
3. Midnight Cowboy - ending
realeimperobritannic 3 years ago 2
4. The ending to "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington"? Jimmy Stewart is a great actor and the power in the last monologue is great.
5. "It's a Wonderful Life" whole film? I'm sorry, just Frank Capra is a godo film maker.

I don't think Takashi Shimura is an underrated actor in history of japanese cinema, he was a great actor forever, may be he was better than Mifune.

I doubt if anyone in Japan ever underrated him. He has always been recognised as a phenomenal talent.

Takashi Shimura is the most underated actors of both his time and Japanese Cinema. Truely this movie would not have been made without him.
