To be fair (ish) America would have been called Columbia except the guy who made the first world map with the Americas on it thought that Amerigo was the first to land on the continent (even though Columbus wasn't the first, Vespucci was even later than that), and that same map maker tried to fix his mistake later on (but it was too late, the name had stuck)
What Columbus really did was make European academia aware of the existence of the Americas.
