"Another point that entered me.. artists/magicians/thieves all share something in common. They never display where they got their shit; it's what makes them. " im not sure this is true
This is my favorite from him and I dont understand why others see it the same. Their is so much feel in it, its like a big F--- YOU! type of song and its cool of him to put poetry to that.
@sayspain I'm going to make a case that Mr. Jones is everybody but him. He has the secret.. you can't have it. This particular song is simply awesome for diving into Dylan's projections (Freudian type of deal). "give us some milk.. else go home". He wanted milk(material) from everyone else. No milk.. no music. This stuff doesn't occur in a vacuum.
How does he do it? How does Dylan take a simple musical form and turn it into magic? This performance is one of many that transcend a purely literal explanation to create an aura of understanding beyond words. More like feeling the words to create meaning.
@letsif Dylan is/was a feeler, first and foremost. The logic that others attempt to derive from the form itself, will be left without reason. Narratives from the 60's seem naive now, full of ignorance toward the message that was always about him and his experience in the moment. Problem is, few are so self-referential/internal as Dylan to comprehend that he was/is making his own music experience. That you were entertained was a convenient coincidence that fed the whole thing..
@jnc07resI think it is beyond anyone at the moment, to penetrate the mystery of creativity. We can attribute it to brain chemistry and wiring, or passion that leads to hard work. But that still doesn't explain anything, really. Even Mr. D. admits that he doesn't know either. I find that good enough
@letsif yeah, I don't *really* want to rip the curtain from the wizard, it's just that the nuts and bolts are old hat to me. The modus of creativity is still within the artist, preforming suspensions of disbelief and whatnot. People go through phases in life.. Dylan 'pre-accident' was a phase that he channeled completely.. the stars lined up, and the world was set on its proverbial ear. The opposite of this conversation is the concept of 'writer's block'..and he was due for a bout eventually.
@letsif Another point that entered me.. artists/magicians/thieves all share something in common. They never display where they got their shit; it's what makes them. Dylan begged, borrowed and stole, and repackaged it as his own. That you were fooled is the height of trickster/art motifs.. Soul singers, as an example, don't really do this thing.. but I bet a person might wonder where all that soul comes from... that feeling. Was it created, or channeled? Good art is rare.
Something is happening here, but you don't know what it is. Man there's all the philosophy of the world here inside that words. One of the greatest abilities of that man is to concentrate a lot of connecton, meanings, reverberations inside few lines. He doesn't write songs, he makes portraits, it's chromatic-music, his words are rainbows.
Papel verde.
For HumanExtra's question - The drummer's name is Mickey Jones. He went on the 1966 England tour when Levon Helm decided he didn't want to go. Helm said that he wasn't too happy with all the booing in late 1965 when they had some concerts, such as the Forest Hill, NY concert. He supposedly went back to Arkansas, his home state, then got back together with Dylan and The Band months later where they eventually recorded The Basement Tapes.
I think people are missing an amazing detail about Dylan in this performance; the fact that he's doing this specific song and how lengthy the lyrics really are if you're just reading them on paper and he memorizes every single word. It does not matter if he wrote it, musicians in general from time to time normally forget their own lyrics while performing their own songs and sometimes they compensate with stage monitors that contain the words on the screen. Here, it's just Dylan and his piano.
@gustavopena02116 No I am not joking. Dylan turned his back on protest songs or as Bob calls them "finger pointing songs" back in 1964. You should listen to BD's lyrics on My Back Pages. After he split with Suze, he lost interest in writing protest songs.
This man is so unbelievably inspiring..Yea I just watched the video and im in complete and utter awe... Previous comment from me was when I just started to watch and was excited. :D

Mr. Jones was a Melody Maker critic called Max Jones. Who but a journalist would walk into a room with a pencil in his hand?
