A bunch of re*ards making stupid comments, probably dont even sail. Its a great video. When I took my basic cruising years ago the skipper did a figure 8 for MOB. I was thinking, this sh*t aint going to work in real life. This is the way I heave to and its as easy as the video says.
Your reply to me was rude for no reason. Have you ever actually tried this? It generally doesn't work. You can't react that fast most of the time. I sail in very cold climates and sometimes extreme conditions. I also sail offshore, where heaving to won't generally work (and neither will figure 8s, since you'll lose site of the person). There are other ways to do it offshore or when you can't easily locate the MOB. You're example of heaving to will work in the very rare situation. Read and learn

Just one suggestion on the video. When instructing on heaving to by tacking, I think you need to emphasize reversing the wheel or tiller after the tack. At first I thought you left that part out. You do mention that you need to turn to port, but that instruction is not really emphasized and easily missed. I picked up on it when I saw the rudder on the diagram flip. Otherwise, instructive video.
You know, for such a simple thing, it is great you took the time to save some lives and teach the novice and pro the right way to do this. Thank you and keep up the good work.
@ppconsultant Thank You for this great video.. PP.. I have tried these tactics this summer sailing in the san juan islands.. I am greatful for your lessons. Sadly, I have furling main sail so lose some roach.. Easy to sail and furl in my sailing conditions.
Would you please tell me what boat you sail.. That boat is awesome.. Its a racer and I am envious. I asked you previously about hull speed but recieved no response. Please tell me your boat type. Thank You PP...
3) When tacking to heave to, try to do it so that you end up on a starboard tack. This will give you some pecking order status. The video shows the right move, but shows it ending up on a port tack.
4) I don't recall seeing the main being eased after initiating the tack. If you don't ease the main, it just might be enough to allow you to re-tack. Again, I'm talking about real-world conditions with higher winds.
This has to be done quickly with the main in (this isn't a contradiction to #1 because you do it fast) and try not to run over the MOB, while deploying a device such as the LifeSling. The other main issue is to practice whatever you're going to be doing in the conditions where it's more likely for the MOB situation to develop, e.g., 15 to 20 kts wind.
2) Heaving to will generally NOT work for a MOB situation. The main issues are to get yourself, your crew, and your boat in control before you make any maneuvers. The best method for control is a Figure 8. The disadvange is that it takes you away from the MOB. The other is an immediate gybe.
A couple of things. While I liked the graphics and the easy tone, a lot of stuff is just plain wrong or dangerous.
1) Gybing in anything other than light or perhaps moderate minds (under 10 knots) will NOT BE POSSIBLE with the main in. The only way to gybe is to sail down (ease main), then bring it in to gybe. To even consider doing something like this in all but the most benign conditions would be near impossible.
chiaro ed istruttivo !

Terribly incorrect. You may wish to reconsider so many points it makes your video obsolete.

Thank you for your comments.
They are obviously your own opinion.
They make absolutely no sense at all.

1) In that video the manouver is done in less than 10 kts, yet I did it, didn't I?
2) Figure 8?? That's what the text book says..get in the real ocean, and try that..
3) ?????
4)main?? I talk about the main..maybe you weren't paying attention
You get out of it by straightening the rudder.
ppconsultant 3 years ago
You can start straightening the rudder either before or during this, but the act of moving the rudder alone will not get the boat moving.
