Despite being in favour of a Monarchy I still see him as something of a hero, Charles I was not a great king and had far too much power.

Under the rules of conflict, quarter was offered first, this would have meant that those in charge could have surrendered and be allowed to leave, when this offer was rejected then the seige continued and the besiegers won the seige then no quarter was given. After the parliament was set up it became obvious that they were a bunch of crooks who did not have the common people at heart so Cromwell dissolved the parliament and made himself de-facto ruler. Hero or Villain I suppose depends very much on who you are talking to.
Despite being in favour of a Monarchy I still see him as something of a hero, Charles I was not a great king and had far too much power.
Cromwell was able to reduce the power of the monarch to pretty much what it is now and to be fair I think he always wanted the system we have today, He never really wanted to kill the King but he knew the king would never accept anything less than absolute power.

Under the rules of conflict, quarter was offered first, this would have meant that those in charge could have surrendered and be allowed to leave, when this offer was rejected then the seige continued and the besiegers won the seige then no quarter was given. @39Auldkellier I agree that even a constitutional republic can be tyrannical. That is why republics have to guard against tyranny. Cromwell himself was torn on this matter. After the parliament was set up it became obvious that they were a bunch of crooks who did not have the common people at heart so Cromwell dissolved the parliament and made himself de-facto ruler. Having good leaders is more important than having a certain political system or not.
