didnt see flower gardens..........or Renos and Tonys Mama house on Barnard...Thats a land mark drug dealers house...Very shadey place...Got a safe in the bird cage out back too
thanks for this video, i love the history of prestwich, ive only lived here a few years and I love the place, my favourite parts are the clough and the clifton viaduct
Wow! I've always lived in Prestwich and it's amazing how it has changed. I think Tower Buildings dissapeared in the early 1980's and was replaced with the eyesore we have now - this is before Tesco and M&S took over!!
Is Bri-Tannic still there? Always remember that ad at the Mayfair, plus the tip-top drinks. Went to see Star Wars there in 1977 and went there regularly. I wonder has anyone got any footage of St. Joseph's High School on Sandgate Rd. I went there (I know it's in Whitefield, not Prestwich) but It no longer exists. Happy memories. Great video, cheers :)
I don't think Bri-Tannic is still there. However the deli/grocers next door is. The lady there still sells those astonishingly good bagels! I spent my childhood 100 yards from that row of shops!
Whey-hey! "Bri-Tannic Mortgage & Finance". Anyone remember the Advertisment trailer that was always played at the Mayfair Cinema? Almost as legendary as the Pearl & Dean intro.
Liked the shot of the empty space next to the library before Sainsbury's was built. Anyone remember what was there before? Was it houses?
I'm so glad you enjoyed this. I well remember the ad at the Mayfair: It started with a slide of the world from space with the voice-over "What in the world do you want?..." Classic. I can remember that area where the Longfield/Sainsbury's is as a waste ground. I think it was all housing prior to that but I will have to check with my mum. The shops along Fairfax Road were still there then but none of the rest. Mum told me and my sister to cross at "Alan's Curtains" on our way to school!
It is not Bury Old Road but Bury New Road. I know it well. I worked in Rushtons and Timpson show repair dept. Also worked at the ols Scholes grocery store delivering goods on a bike with a small wheel at the front and huge basket above it. Walked on the wall that surrounded the smal Jewish cemetary opposite The National School. Used to go into the pubs on the village. Best memories are of getting seconds at Buntings bake shop on the way to Heys Road school. Had some meat & potatoe pies at lunch.
Top of Cockoo lane, I knew a guy who lived on the south side of Guest Rd on the corner ( Manchester side) of B o Rd, he went to Australia in the 70's. his name was G.B.
Yes it is bury old road. The building at the beginning was a CO-OP department store, my grandparents used to take me there to see father Christmas, it sold everything from records to furniture.
thank you so much for the video. its amazing to see what prestwich looked like... on the first part of this vid.. is it on bury new road? because it looks like it... =)
I went to school in Prestwich (Hey's Road... HATED IT!!!) I later worked in Prestwich in the signalbox for a few years. I have fond memories of the town, the pubs, the model shops... Good old Padbury's !!! Take a look at my clips for more of the trains and the signalbox.
very nice video remember it well i lived in carr clough one of the carr clough boys on carr ave i now live in oz brought some memories back nice video this is my daughter ocount not mine with that title
it was great to see old prestwich again! i only left 10 years ago but still remember when prestwich village was that busy! and the trains that i took to bury as a kid then going to bury market to buy a pair of jeans for a pound that my nan had given me for my birthday, and not leaving the market without treating myself black pudding with kechup or a bag of hot potatos.
it was great to heaton park and heaton hall a group of us gatecrashed a poss wedding party one evening they were so nice to us!
Glad you liked it! I think the "deli" is still there. I think my auntie who still lives opposite gets some groceries there. I guess I would have been about 13 and into my granddad's cine gear. I plan to re-film the sequence shot for shot with the locations as they are now (apart from my old back garden - someone else's now)!
This is a nice trip down memory lane. Guess I'd have been about 2 when it was filmed. I just about remember Tower buildings/co-op and arguing with the Santa there one year that he *was* my grandad (like you do when your 4!). I recognise the shop with the canopy at the top of Cuckoo Lane as I had to pass it to get to school. 13p for an iced currant bun (:D)!
is that church on Church Lane just out Prestwich Village?? Fucking hell, the trains running, not the manchester Metrolink, St. Mary's park, Heaton Park tower, Heaton Park golf course, Bury old Road, Bry Tanic isn't der ne more, thanks for posting this.
Hiya. Yes, it's St Mary's church. In the opening shot you can just see the old junior school (demolished soon after). Look at my other film (Simnic - don't ask) for a really nice shot of one of the trains. I wish I'd filmed more of them.
Anyone remember Peakers hardware on Whitaker Lane? And that strange weird hardware smell? In fact anything on Whitaker Lane in 70's 80's?

It was indeed the NEW Road. Later in the film is a shot of the Old Road taken from the top of Guest Road which was my home up to the age of 18.
