Luckily, my female Sennie has always been willing to step up (she's sitting on my hand now, watching intently as I type with one hand) without biting, but this is an excellent way of training a bird. My male Sennie was a rescue and had been badly treated; I used a similar technique to get him to step on my arm, but the hand is a step too far for him, even after 5 years.
BTW - great music; Focus is one of my favourite bands!
For you guys whose bird is flying away, start with the bird in the cage, as shown in the video. This step may take weeks to perfect. Only when the bird is "in love with" touching the target stick should you try it outside. By then, most birds will still come towards the stick and not fly away. I have a flighted parrot that was not tame when I got her, and used the identical method to this video. After 14 weeks, she did her first performance at a school!
@k9shrink I will try those thing. I just got my Quaker this pass Christmas and my kids call her green bean.she open and got out her cage yesterday 1/17/12 and today all by herself but when we went to put her back in she go's to bite at our fingers. she also backs away from us when we go to her cage and feed and water her. what she I do we really needs someones help
@Sundown90731 You might try working with the parrot alone for a while and making the parrot off-limit to kids. The parrot may be afraid of the kids... and probably is enjoying the freedom and doesn't want to go in the cage again for weeks... or months... (assuming she doesn't normally get out). Try training like the video to step on/off a stick for a treat, and eventually your hand. Our bird is out of her cage at least 8 hours a day, and gets a treat when going back, so is fine.
About how long does it take to train your parrot this way? Do you think this would work for a parrot that has been neglected and in a cage for most of her life with little human contact?
@cheygurl2010 It takes as long as it takes. It depends on the parrot, it's history, the owner, etc. It can happen in as little as a few days or could take months to make it work. But I think given enough time and effort it's guaranteed to work on any parrot.
@flamingwolfz my guess is that he wouldn't bite the stick because he wouldn't bite you. he'll only bite the stick if he's uncomfortable with it in his "bubble." don't use the stick. just the clicker, toys, & treats.
@Jebbifeer No. It had nothing to do with that. The parrot isn't expected to "bite" the stick at all. It's merely touching it. If you go and read the article linked under the video, you'll see the full explanation of how to get a parrot to touch the stick for the first time if it isn't already going for it.
You did a fantastic job of stopping the parrot from biting you. Thanx for the video. How long does it take to train them to get to this point? My baby dusky conure, who is 14 weeks old, doesn't usually bite, but when I'm trying to get him to set up and down from the top of the cage, that's when he bites. Sometimes it's a struggle.
I had african grey. Not handled in yrs/bit a LOT. I would work w/him & if he bit he got put back in his cage immediately and IGNORED. He hated being ignored. Of course he wanted attn & out of his cage. I would only put him back in for 10mins or so, then out again. This helped. It took awhile but I could pet him/scratch his chin, pick him up, & hang out w/him for hrs outside of his cage. He learned. He would also spend every nite out on his perch w/his his light in the kitchen. lovd it.
@wedingo Start teaching him tricks, give him toys outside the cage, play with him, etc. Give him more of a reason to want to spend time with you than just treats. This method is to start getting the parrot out. The you need to build a relationship. I never give my parrots treats for stepping up, they just want to. They fly to me for the heck of it a lot of times as well.
The only thing I see here that's a problem is only feeding twice a day. That's wrong. Food should ALWAYS be available as well as water. They have small crops that empty quickly. Not having food available all the time is abuse, IMO. I also taught three rescues to step up without ever using target training, although I know it does work if you want to go that route.
@jaguar24659 Nope. For a parrot of this size or larger it's not a problem. They naturally eat in the mornings and evenings anyway. They can hold enough food in their crop to go 24+ hours without eating (not that I'm advising it). If you feed them nutrition/calorie packed foods like pellets, they get by just fine on two meals a day. It is not abuse at all. If the two meals are unlimited, they barely want to work for food as it is, forget being desperate for it. Really not as bad as it seems.
@MomoTheBellyDancer The only problem with your rage is that most parrots aren't captured from the wild. It's just not done anymore, for obvious reasons.
@MomoTheBellyDancer And cats should hunt mice in Africa and dogs should hunt Elk in the mountains and fish should be in the ocean. But they don't, because humans love companionship. If the parrot is happy, there's no reason to want to toss it out in the wild. Being wild doesn't equal being happy.
@MomoTheBellyDancer What do you know about parrots? The Poicephalus Senegalus (as seen in the video) species does not even live in rain forests. Most of the parrots found as pets today are domestically raised much like cats and dogs. Genetically they are not yet domesticated but they have the learning capacity to grow up accustomed to the human environment. So having an opinion on something you have no idea about has no merit. This video is simply meant to teach people how to handle parrots.
@itubedesiree The bird does not suffer in the cage any more than a child suffers from spending time in his room or home. My parrots like their cage and willingly go in every night. They spend time out of the cage flying around my apartment when I am home. Midday they tend to nap and take care of themselves regardless of cage or not. Anyone who has a parrot knows how destructive they can be and this would pose a threat to the birds if they could roam the home with nobody home.
@xArnold99x the clicker is a sound that they come to understand means they are doing well. it's a reward. Google "clicker training." it is used for all kinds of animals.

@1:01 The bird uses his beak when he moves from place to place, just as he uses his feet. So it seems to me that the biting is being misinterpreted when it involves a finger or hand, especially when the finger or hand is not close enough to simply step onto without the help of his beak. It seems to me that the closer she holds her hand to the bird, the less likely he is to have to use his beak.
Wow great video I will try doing this with my Parakeet Girl named Tiki..By the way, what treat did you use in this video to reward your bird..What treat did u give him? Nice Video, Plz respond bak that would be great!!
@MsChewbacca4ever it is a clicker in her hand, it is a great way to make noise and make the bird understand that he did something good and he will get his treat, something like that I am not an expert
My vet told me to super glue my birds beak closed unit he learned not to bite. I tried it but now I don't think he is eating or drinking. If he dosn't start eating and drinking I'm just gonna let him fly away, I don't know what to do.
@happyninslave why the hell would a vet tel you that im pretty sure that they were being sarcastic and YOU being a bird owner should have known better >:(
@happyninslave I don't care if my vet was being sarcastic or not. I did what she told me and you don't have to yell at me!! I'm gonna let me bird fly away in the morning, I'm tired of people being mean to me. :(
@KFengK This is just a way to overcome biting and built trust. But once the bird gets to hang out with you enough (when it was biting it obviously couldn't), it will learn how nice it is to be with you and then learn not to bite in the long run. It's important that the time that the bird spends with you after the basic training is always good and that you are not forcing the bird to do things it doesn't want. Not clipping the wings helps a lot too.
Bird brains can only think of one thing at a time. You distracted the bird by training him to focus on the stick. Since he was focused on the stick he could not bite you.
Poicephalus sure has a heck of a bite for a small parrot, lol.
My Meyer's showed NO signs of a bite coming, and he was like a little pitbull once he got clamped down on me. He was rehomed and a bit mental. Thankfully that phase didn't last long, he's just the awesomest little guy now.

To the parakeet guy if there is a pet supplies plus by you, they sell both millet and clickers. I don't know about the target stick but it looks like something you could find at a home depot. It kinda looks like a garden stake to me. Amazing video btw. I've been trying to train the galah at my store to not bite but it's difficult to be consistent with all the customers. I usually take him out after hours but I would definitely like to clicker train him.
@Savone1107 I don't have millet, but I do have target sticks and clickers available. So if anyone in the US/Canada wants to buy a set, send me a PM or visit my parrot wizard store linked from my channel page.
excuse me i just got a new parakeet but i don't have a clicker or a stick to target train it. he/she i(ts still a baby) is afraid of my hand. I have an extra perch and he/she will step up to it, but not my hand. can you help me. it already knows up plus i don't have any spray millet right now. please help.
@TheParakeetTrainer The most important thing for you to get is millet. That I can't help you with. Find a local pet store, most of them sell at least millet spray for birds. Then if you can't find a clicker/target stick, PM me and I can link you to my parrot supplies website store and help you buy a clicker/target set cheap for parrot training. If you have any further questions, join my parrot forum linked from my channel page. Good luck.
GREAT video! We have a foster bird, a Cherry Headed Conure that is probably over 10 years old (we've had for a few months) and we don't think this bird has EVER stepped up. Plus, CHC's aren't known for being "social" Conures... my wife and I are trying to get this bird adoptable and stepping up is Goal #1. No luck so far, but we're going to give this a try!
How long, and how often should each step be done?
I was thinking 10 mins, 2x a day until that step is learned? Then off to the next?
@vegasgleason That's a great attitude but training isn't exactly quantifiable like that. You kind of have to feel how it's going. Start off with more shorter sessions first (like walking by the cage frequently and just giving a treat). Then the clicker conditioning sessions can be done a bunch of times as well. The target training can start as a bunch of short sessions in a day but as the bird gains experience reduce to several longer. You have to feel the progress and adjust accordingly.
@AshayLol No. Check out my videos with Truman. He was never clipped. Using the methods I explain here and in other videos work for all parrots whether clipped or not.
i love this.my ring neck is afraid of my hand and cites when i get my finger very close. I want to try this do you know how long it will take until i can make him climb to my hand to climb his reward just like you trained UR parrot? How long it took until u did that?:-)
when my bird bites me i put it in a fucking head lock... no spoiled ass animals live in my house.. you women need to grow balls and quit putting up with that shit.. they're smart enough to know right and wrong
Hello, I have a Indian Ringneck Parakeet and when i approach her she just trys to bite me, when i let her out of the cage she flys about and wont come back, and when i approach her she flys away, is there a way that i can train to tame her and stop her biting without taking her out of the cage? she wont take treats, i have a clicker and ive tried everything, nothing seems to work oh and also, she wont take treat's, she just drops them

@KrisaurusFlanger This is just a process to get the bird used to stepping on your hand. Once it is reliable at doing that, you should be ready to use other ways to reward it for stepping up. For example when the bird steps on your hand in the cage (instead of biting), it will get to come out and spend time out of cage. This is often a great reward. Stepping up could also mean being brought to a fun place, getting pet, or getting the opportunity to perform a trick in reward for a treat.
@kiliparrot Exactly... or you can use "skritches" or similar. My Amazon just wants to be up against my chest, so that's her reward.
Also don't get her on your finger/arm and then immediately to the cage. That way, she won't associate stepping up to always mean it's time to go get locked up! :)
I have a peach-faced lovebird, and when I try to make him step up he just flutters away. He steps up on a perch but not onto my hand. How can I teach him to stay on his cage/ training standard??? Thanks!!!
Kiliparrot i have a big problem with my parrot, when he ends up cutting the stick, does not want the snack! What did you give during this video training?
Ok. My parrot is really freaked out of sticks. I had other parrots before and I've trained them to step up in sticks before. We suspect that she was hit by a stick before we got her because she really freaks out at the sight of it. How can i get her to jump onto an stick without been scared of it? Believe me, we tried everything and this was has been owned for 15 years. Only two years ago she allowed everyone to start scratching her head at home. She takes VERY long to trust anyone
@kiliparrot Believe me, the perch, we had tried that years ago. No, she had hes own personality and she just refuses to step onto something. I had many parrots in the past and this is the only one that won't step onto anything. She's jus one of a kind, if she finally stands on anything you had put her onto and starts moving she just flies off it
Im all for people adopting older birds because they all deserve a loving home. But me myself i preffer to raise my own baby,, None of my birds ever bit anyone. I believe this biting problem is more for people that buy their birds already big and that havebeen rehomed from people that dont know what their doing and just buy them because they see them all so cute at the pet shop.Read about them first and learn how to take care of them and you will have a sweet baby forever.
My birds run from everything that is put in or next to the cage besides My hand and Millit. But they are afread of everything that i put in the cage... Help please
Thanks for this info. My boyfriend's bird doesn't like to step up onto our fingers, and is very cagebound, not liking to stray from the age in which his cage is, inside and out. I'm going to get a stick, perch and a clicker to give this a whirl.

X3n0nFr33k 5 months ago
@1:01 The bird uses his beak when he moves from place to place, just as he uses his feet. So it seems to me that the biting is being misinterpreted when it involves a finger or hand, especially when the finger or hand is not close enough to simply step onto without the help of his beak. It seems to me that the closer she holds her hand to the bird, the less likely he is to have to use his beak.
YY4Me133 5 months ago
@YY4Me133 trust me, when they bite its hard to misinterpret it

you took only 1 day to train your parrot like that?
DevilNeverCry12 5 months ago
wouldnt that be bad? wouldnt the bird only want to come to u cuz you will give it a treat?
KFengK 5 months ago
@KFengK No
kiliparrot 5 months ago
@kiliparrot ohhh thats good then i was just wondering thank you
KFengK 5 months ago

Savone1107 7 months ago
@Savone1107 I don't have millet, but I do have target sticks and clickers available. So if anyone in the US/Canada wants to buy a set, send me a PM or visit my parrot wizard store linked from my channel page.

excuse me i just got a new parakeet but i don't have a clicker or a stick to target train it. he/she i(ts still a baby) is afraid of my hand. I have an extra perch and he/she will step up to it, but not my hand. can you help me. it already knows up plus i don't have any spray millet right now. please help.
TheParakeetTrainer 8 months ago

Then off to the next?
vegasgleason 8 months ago
@vegasgleason That's a great attitude but training isn't exactly quantifiable like that. You kind of have to feel how it's going. Start off with more shorter sessions first (like walking by the cage frequently and just giving a treat). Then the clicker conditioning sessions can be done a bunch of times as well. The target training can start as a bunch of short sessions in a day but as the bird gains experience reduce to several longer. You have to feel the progress and adjust accordingly.

what happens with treats after the bird steps up without hesitation. If i always have to treat it when it steps up it will be a fat bird :O
KrisaurusFlanger 10 months ago
@KrisaurusFlanger This is just a process to get the bird used to stepping on your hand. Once it is reliable at doing that, you should be ready to use other ways to reward it for stepping up. For example when the bird steps on your hand in the cage (instead of biting), it will get to come out and spend time out of cage. This is often a great reward. Stepping up could also mean being brought to a fun place, getting pet, or getting the opportunity to perform a trick in reward for a treat.
kiliparrot 10 months ago
@kiliparrot Exactly... or you can use "skritches" or similar. My Amazon just wants to be up against my chest, so that's her reward.
Also don't get her on your finger/arm and then immediately to the cage. That way, she won't associate stepping up to always mean it's time to go get locked up! :)

She takes VERY long to trust anyone
contemporatango 1 year ago
@contemporatango Rather than using just any stick, use a perch that the parrot has been long accustomed to seeing in its cage for stepping onto.
kiliparrot 1 year ago
