Aactually I'm Japanese and I really don't know the system and moral codes in Australian (and international) TV field, so I don't have words about this. Or I should say that it can't be helped. Is it really racist? The Japanese are the whalers, sure there might be one or two Aussie ones but the whalers come from Japan and whales are Japanese food. It is not racist just because they are pointing this out, that is just like saying people who criticize Obama on his policies are racist.
In this case, it is too extreme for Japanese people to see that the person who is obviously acting as the Japanese is killed in a public commercial, not movie that way. It is unthinkable and impossible to broadcast this sort of public ads in Japan although I think they are also sometimes careless about this kind of matters. Yes, it is uncomfortable to see a man killed, but it is even worse when you see an actual whale, not acting, being killed not by harpooning, that is used to drag them in, but by being cut and beaten. It had the same effect as the smoking ads, it is in your face, and so it should be.
Well, I believe that the main problem is not using harpoon, but stopping whaling to protect endangered species. Your claim is not effective as the “Kill gentler” agenda is likely to lead some enthusiastic Japanese ppl to start shouting "Stop killing and eating any animals" or something like that. @zquitier here's a couple of reason's Norway HAS NOT signed the Moratorium on commercial whaling, Japan has, Norway hunts sustainably (I know it sounds like an oxymoron) and within their own waters, Japan does neither (killing more than 1000 whales outside of Japanese waters shows that it isn't sustainable).

Secondly, unlike whales, kangaroo's aren't regulated by an international environmental agreement. Japan are a signatory of this convention, but use a loophole to continue whaling at large when it is otherwise controlled. Thirdly, kangaroo's aren't recognised as a threatened species by the World Conservation Union.

You don't seem well versed in the issue, and your conclusion that we are xenophobic is very injudicious.

@takjpn That was 4 years ago and since then aboriginal communities have agreed to not harvest dugongs because of concerns about their conservation status. Which cant be said for Japan and its fleet of whalers (which by the way, are in Australia's waters illegally fishing)

Dingoes are becoming more endangered due to interbreeding with wild dogs and kangaroos are pests in some areas so they are hunted. We look after our sheep other wise they wouldnt produce the high quality wool that they produce. Whaling is bad. It is killing an endangered species of animal and nothing can back that up. @zane0809 Er... no, not ironic at all. First of all, the whale isn't the national fauna of Japan, so there is no logical comparison to be made. Secondly, unlike whales, kangaroo's aren't regulated by an international environmental agreement. Japan are a signatory of this convention, but use a loophole to continue whaling at large when it is otherwise controlled. Thirdly, kangaroo's aren't recognised as a threatened species by the World Conservation Union.

@zane0809 Norwegian whaling is conducted in a sustainable population of minke whales in the North-East Atlantic. Their quota is roughly the same as Japan's (circa 1000) yet is rarely achieved. Unlike Japan, Norwegian vessels don't sail far from their own waters to break international whaling conventions in order to hunt not only minke whale, but also threatened species such as sperm and fin. You don't seem well versed in the issue, and your conclusion that we are xenophobic is very injudicious.

@zane0809 I've never tried kangaroo before, it's very unusual to eat it, ive met a couple of people who tried it before. And the difference is that kangaroo is not an endangered species, whales are. It's not a racist ad, it more mocks the Japanese nationality because it's true, The Japanese are known for their illegal whaling.

The Cronulla Riots not exactly racially motivated (more like conflict between two countries) but racial attacks were caught along the way. It was caused by Sydney's youth's hatred to the Lebanese because of their muslim gangs, gangbbangs, bashing locals and Indians. But it was a really shitty revenge attack we did.
