Before you get your computer fix, call Fertech Computer Repair, there number is 312-735-1788. My friend call them and got his computer Fix for $40.00 they give you what you want plus there extremely fast. everyone is saying that Fertech Computer Repair is 100 times better then Geek Squad.
Hilarious but scary I once got kicked out of Best Buy cause I told a guy where he could buy a computer that he was looking at in Best Buy for about 300 dollars less & that was exactly the same, then one of the Best Buy sales guy came by and said I had to leave so I did and I bought my TV for 200 dollars less at a different store. When this happens just take your business somewhere else and tell them you are. It pisses them right off lets em know that they HAD a sale. That's what I did.
@ROFLSoldiers yeah because when you walk across the street to another store and drop a couple hundred it be real salty instead of trying to rob the public they should be honest people
This is what happens when Government Schools dumb down education. Government schools are cutting vocational classes an/or using them as dumping grounds for students who are behavior problems. Some of the students come to vocational classes to goof off. This can be dangerous and/or fatal for the students who are there to learn. Example: I was in a woodworking class in high school and another student was amusing himself throwing things at me while I was cutting woo on the table saw (continued
The capitalistic democrazy seems to be promoting make as much money as possible by doing as little as possible. So when will we become friends all of us? The Ego must be dealt with before there is nothing more left to scam.! Maybe a personal inner change for peace with one self and the world...
There's nothing wrong with charging for such a simple problem. These things happen to a lot of people and they're too scared to try and figure it out themselves. I learned hardware basics in a very very very short amount of time. However it sucks when people are taken advantage of.
THIS IS EXACTLY WHY THE IT FIELD SUCKS everybody thinks they can just go and hop into the IT field so companies like these and Contract Companies can pay us LIKE SHIT!!!
I've had my share of computers from customers with lose IDE and memory resets. I charge nothing for that in the hopes I gained a new customer. I think SATA has eliminated this problem from happening.
This particular example is really stupid, anyone who knows the basics of computing, just by opening up and looking should find this problem. That said, some problems are harder to diagnose, and it is not always the most precise process, but you would think that if you get PAID to do repairs, you should know what the fuck you are doing. But again, this is a realllly bad example... the guy who thought that it was the fucking power supply??? That I thought was fucking funny.
I think next time I'm around Circut City, I'll stop and make fun of them.
Just learn basic PC repair knowlegs. Tom's Hardware Online offers a good amount of information that you can use, or GeekTeks or other small shops that will actually help you.
Some computer repair shops do not have any integrity, or work ethics, that is the simple yet uncomfortable truth. I used to work for one of those companies, and all the owner saw in their clients was their wallets. We were told to bill every 15min of work.
Hard to believe anyone would misdiagnose that. I have fixed that a dozen times for free. Although in some of their defense some guys don't open the case first thing like I do when I get a startup issue.
$60 covers a full-spectrum diagnostic, alongside the customer's particular issue; not an overcharge. Wasn't a laptop, so it's unlikely the tech could boot it for a quick consultation. More likely that they had to set it in queue to be worked on later, then following mandated steps by corporate. Also, the red-shirt prolly wasn't even a tech (green polo), and could've misread the work order.
But Geek Squad's misdiagnosis...LAWL. Wish we made 200+ bucks off a diag, too.
Geek Squad's diagnostic costs $70. Not 200+. In fact, their Advanced Diag and Repair (their highest level of service for in-store repair), costs $199.99 with tax, regardless of repair.
aye...indeed the price of a diagnostic service is 70. and at my precinct the agent would probably plug the computer in and call the customer to pick up the computer.
we even take computers in if a warranty is on the computer and do a quick diag. of it. i once reseated ram on a customer free of charge and her computer was working great. i charged her nothing. the whole thing took about 4 minutes.
lets not judge everyone by just one store's mistake kiddies.
I agree, not all computer techs are scandalous bastards. That being said, I think the focus of this video was to point out the extortion of the average non-techie computer owner by the big box stores. Actually this shit might not even be the fault of the people that work at the stores, they probably have a lot of gay procedures they are supposed to follow to speed things up, and i bet they are not discouraged from giving a diagnosis that will lead to a costlier repair.
When turning on the computer, it outputted something like No Boot Device detected. So obviously you would just need to take a quick look at the hard drive. By seeing the IDE cable unplugged, all you'd need to do is plug it in and then see if the computer works again and obviously it did.
ok so they took out the IDE cable. Its nearly impossible for an IDE cable at that length to become 'loose' or unattached. If I had someone come into my PC repair store with a simple problem like that I would probably guess it is a setup. plugging it back in would be the first thing to do.... I would be reluctant to make people pay for such a simple service.
hence why you open your case before you go to some company. it could be something as simple as plugging a loose cable like they show here. i mean, its not rocket science, 1+1=2. if you see an unplugged cable plug the fucker back in. people are just so scared of computers cause they "seem" so complex. they really arent.
What if it's a laptop? Opening up a laptop would need to be done with more care. Although I once had a problem with my computer where it would turn on, but the screen remained black even if you waited for half an hour. When I took it in, they tested it without the batter in, and it still didn't work. They ended up having to put a new power inverter into it, and some new chips around the power inverter.
there are numerous videos like this on Youtube and they are all the same - they get some IT pro to do something like change the BIOS settings or unplug the hard drive. Easy fix if you know that's the problem, but what tech would ever think that the customer had opened their case and unplugged the hard drive?? It's not about being dishonest, these techs just never thought to check for a loose cable and if you're really busy you have to check it in for a diagnostic so you can help the next in line
I don't think Geek Teks gives a crap what you say. And I don't think their moderating comments. They seem fairly confident in their ability to meet customer satisfaction levels and if that is true, then they probably don't bother with comment moderation.
What bothers me is that Geek Teks is using this as an advertisement, when it doesn't have anything at all to do with Geek Teks. Also, it seems that Geek Teks moderates comments away from this page that do not reflect favorably on them, such as this one you're reading now!
I'm glad I know how to fix most common computer hardware problems myself. Saves money, time, I don't have to drop it off somewhere, and I don't have to worry about people being untrustworthy and trying to scam me.
This is quite sad of how untrustworthy they are. Several of my friends come asking me for help about there computers. Most of the time I fix their computer problems, and I don't charge them anything!
Fortunately, I'm not stupid enough to need to go to a comp repair shop EVER.
If I did though, I'd rather go to Geeksquad and overpay $100 than hear one more thing about your "teks". Seriously, you're fixing computers, not watching children, illiteracy is not cute.
This is an interesting segment though, bus as big unit said, I too am glad I am able to put computers together and diagnose hardware/software problems. But you wont catch me working for eight dollars and hour fixing your stuff either. Sorry, but we dont get this training to give away underpaid labor. Do it yourself or go buy a whole new system if you expect that.
Geek Squad does hire people without A+ Certification. I do have mine but I am not a CIA, I'm a COA so I don't typically work on machines even though I am smarter than most of the agents there.
For honest to God good help....it's not easy to find now a days, because employers will not spend the money for good people. They expect to do the same job for $8 an hour. They are WRONG. No good tech will work for $8 an hour. **** Geek Squad and **** Best Buy!!
I agree, people who are certified did not study computer science to work for poverty rate saleries. Hire trained professionals and pay them properly, and you can then demand qualified professionals. Pay them an insulting wage for their knowledge and expect the guy from burger king working on your equipment, with maybe one person on the shift with decent knowledge to guide him along. I can answer phones and make more than that. Its ridiculous. Seriously what do ppl expect?
Glad I know how to fix computers my self I knew some computer teks were bad but this is crazy. What a bunch of moochers truing to get charge 100's of dollars for a loose cable the only good one there was the one that did it for free.
Does anyone know how much it costs to keep a computer shop open? They actually loose money on PC repairs because of wasted man-hours alone. If PPL are too dumb to fix a hard drive cable on their own why should the shop fix it for nothing? I agree that lying to customers seems bad but a mans gotta eat. Besides if you fix something for nothing once you'll be expected to do it again.
I used to work for the Geek Squad. You don't know how many mornings we sat around in those hyped up gatherings while the supervisors tried to conjure up yet another way in which we could extract more money out of the customer.
I work part-time for them and I have 9 years experience in computer repair and have a college degree in computers (and I'm the least knowledgable agent) - most of the techs there are either college grads or currently in school for some sort of computer degree/certification. Even some of our salesmen have computer degrees - it's a good second job when they pay you $12 part-time.
Rule's for who to trust when getting a computer fixed. 1:Dont trust fat fucks wearing glasses. 2:Dont trust packies with or without glasses.3:Every body at the geek squad in best buy is fucking dumb as shit! 4:Dont trust hackers! 5: Dont trust skinny fuckers eating chocolate bars that are on the verge of becoming fat fucks! 6: not last but never trust bald headed bastards with or without glasses! Trust university neards as long they are not paying for their own tutuion!
Nice comment I trust Mexican techs...I had a computer repair when my computer was crashing and I couldn't do anything about it...they charged me 100 bucks...but worth it 'cause they installed some kool programs that I knew it cost more than what I had paid...
they shouldnt rag on the stores that charged for this.
sure its a simple repair, but the employees are pressured by the company to charge the full price for this minor repair. its either charge the customer or risk their job.
but the last guy was an idiot. i hope he goes out of business.
I'm sorry but GeekTek charges WAY too much for a lot of their services. But I guess with gas prices now a days, you've got to make up the difference somewhere.
I love how so many techs were saying the power supply was bad. They shouldn't have even been looking at power issues. Now I remember why I tell people to run from the Geek Squad like the plague at every chance I get.
The Geek Squad doesn't stock Power Supplies??? Since when? They're all ATX now, and those WERE ATX boxes! Even small, one-man PC shops carry at least a few of those. And if they don't have them, BestBuy DOES sell them! They just want your money.
Well, if the problem had actually been a power supply, the installation of a standard ATX unit would risk damage to the computer, believe it or not.
The computers used for the tests were all Dell Optiplex and these machines use a power supply that is physically ATX, but the pinouts on the connector to the motherboard are different.
I know as I have two Optiplex computers. This is in contrast to a Dell Dimension 4600 that I also have, which does use a standard ATX power supply.
The only reason for Dell's deviation at the moment was to, perhaps, earn more money on parts and service sales.
The way to tell is to check out the wires on the ATX connector. The colors mean the same things, but they are in different locations compared to the regular ATX supplies.
But, it doesn't change the fact that they still just want your money as evidenced by the fact that the "techs" didn't check the simple stuff first.
I went to BBs Geek Squad to send in my PC for repairs after my inputs (monitor most notably) weren't being responsive. The initial diagnostic from just talking with the rep told me, "Sounds like a power supply problem." After watching this video, sounds like they are told to say that BS!
Wow, You mean to tell me that if I was to go to compusa, they would charge me $119 just to push in a damn cable??? Wow..but my questions is, how much would Geekteks charge for this?
yeah i dont see a problem with a diagnosed problem price they quotes for a simple fix, after all, if you go to a mechinic and all you needed was a vaccum tube reconnected, he still chargers $80 to look at it
I think being a Christian helps me, I know how I would feel if someone told me my power supply was bad just so they could get a few bucks extra. The old treat others how you would want to be treated seems to have gone out the window. Now everyone seems to be out for a quick buck. These people should be locked up, and weeksan your a crook.
I have Windows XP, my computer WOULDNT changed my background to a royal blue with a warning that my computer had been infected with a virus.I ran Spy Sweeper and I had 93 Cookies/Trojans and 311 Traces. I told it to delete all of the Cookies/Trojans like I have every time before. Now, it won't let me change my background to a picture. It will only let me change it to different colors.
I am a tech at a store that will remain unnamed but I do have to say that we are pressured to make additional sales and add "attachments" and so Best Buy works the same way we do.
I am sure they knew what the problem was and as such they thought the customer was an idiot and it was time to get an attachment so they make stuff up.
Why? We believe that customers are not as stupid as most stores treat them to be. Ultimately, the customer can and will find out if you are being or have been dishonest in your dealings.
Honesty is ALWAYS the best policy, period. But we are hoping that it pays off in future business as well.
True. Attachments are important. Very important. But we believe attachments should be added honestly. I think that in the long haul, you might begin to see some of these other big chain service centers begin to suffer financially. It happens all the time in the service industry. Ultimately, it is caused by a lack of quality control management which helps to implement fraud control mechanisms and built consumer trust.
This is the very area we at Geek Teks are strong in. Even if there is no financial payoff, being honest with your customers is just the right thing to do and we as a company have committed ourselves to treat our customers with integrity regardless of the financial consequences. We believe that money is not the only thing in life worth striving for.
In the auto industry, same with computers. If you tell them something else is wrong when it really isn't just to inflate the price then your commiting fraud and will be locked up. Any company that has to go through dirty tricks of deceiving people should be thrown in jail. Recomending upgrading the memory, bigger hard drive is honest. Not creating problems just to get more money.
It's good to see another computer repair company around that is honest to it's customers and does not stand for the poor service depicted in this video.
I had that exact computer case as a backup computer, its one of the most basic cases out there, if you can't clearly see the issue in that case, you shouldn't be working in IT, plain and simple.
This was proper reporting, in my view, of a computer repair story by a news team. They mentioned ALL the places they visited, their results, and repair costs. Much better video than one of your other videos I watched and rated. And, like all retail services, it's buyer beware.
wow this makes me angry b/c i work for a big box store and i know that all the men i work with trully just want to help ppl fix there comp. i makes me angry b/c the new is taking advantage of a very complicated field that i understand problems can occur in i dont fix computers however sell and build them for fun and this i cruel joke its f***ing cruel
We fix computer for a living too but we have absolutely no problems with this type of news reporting. Why? Because it is needed! Any industry is always best kept honest by their customers and ratings/reviews of their services/products. Reports like this are a great way to insure that a company's policies/procedures are being implemented in a way to prevent this type of occurance from ever happening. This is what we attempt to do with our company ...And it works!
wow, i tried this with my little brother (age 11) and after about 25min. guess wat? he found the cable and plugged it back in. so ur telling me that some certified computer repair shops are dumber than an 11 year old? tsk tsk tsk
Obviously you are not that great if you can't plug a jumper in. :) JK. Not all technicians are like this but some are scammers. I liked the ony company not makeing her pay for it. Something that simple shouldn't have a charge.
that geek squad guy was a disgrace to our company, i cannot BELIEVE he said it was the power supply, omg, he should die, anyways, geek squad is rated the number one service company in the US and in canada, so i wouldnt say we are that bad
Also, the jumper might have been technically set incorrectly. And as for how much they charge, they have to charge money for diagnosis. If you don't like the base fee, then don't take it there.
My friends and I took a Computer Systems Networking class in high school and during those times we would go up to best buy occassionally and ask them a computer question (which we knew the answer to) and tried to guess how many wrong answers we would get. The results are unbelievable. Geek squad sucks, they don't even require certifications to work there!
I've taken the A+ certification class before, which teaches you how to fix most computer problems and checking the wires is the first thing you're suppose to do, things tend to get lose at times. If it was the power supply like the guy on geek squad said, then they wouldn't even get an error message at all, the computer wouldn't even turn on.
Thats right, but it can be the PSU, even if it's boots. Then it will shutdown without warning after a time, it dependt of how mutch power usage your computer need at a spesific time, like when the cd-rom starts etc. But then you may have a to small PSU. just information, not to critic.
Never EVER EVER go to Geek Squad. You're much better off asking the fat, nerdy middle school kid down the street to come over and look at it than to take it to those thieves.
Fixing a computer is like anything else that the average person knows little about. Even if you find an honest person at an honest shop, you are paying for knowledge to repair the item. Most people haven't a clue as to how to even open those Dell Optiplex cases, and the wiring inside looks like spaghetti to them.
My hats off to the shop who did it for free. That's the shop that comes out ahead in the long run.
this guy sucks at newscasting

that is not acceptable for a newscaster

Hilarious but scary I once got kicked out of Best Buy cause I told a guy where he could buy a computer that he was looking at in Best Buy for about 300 dollars less & that was exactly the same, then one of the Best Buy sales guy came by and said I had to leave so I did and I bought my TV for 200 dollars less at a different store. When this happens just take your business somewhere else and tell them you are. It pisses them right off lets em know that they HAD a sale. That's what I did.

Scam everyone if you can and dont be friends with people cos you want their money and not their friends ship. Thats Capitalism at its prime which is being taught at school off course.

Some computer repair shops do not have any integrity, or work ethics, that is the simple yet uncomfortable truth. I used to work for one of those companies, and all the owner saw in their clients was their wallets. We were told to bill every 15min of work.
kvasir40 3 years ago
Hard to believe anyone would misdiagnose that. I have fixed that a dozen times for free. Although in some of their defense some guys don't open the case first thing like I do when I get a startup issue.

I love misinformation...
ArsMemorativa 3 years ago
I'm also fond of misinformation.
Geek Squad's diagnostic costs $70. Not 200+. In fact, their Advanced Diag and Repair (their highest level of service for in-store repair), costs $199.99 with tax, regardless of repair.
CosmicJelly 3 years ago
aye...indeed the price of a diagnostic service is 70. and at my precinct the agent would probably plug the computer in and call the customer to pick up the computer.
we even take computers in if a warranty is on the computer and do a quick diag. of it. i once reseated ram on a customer free of charge and her computer was working great. i charged her nothing. the whole thing took about 4 minutes.
lets not judge everyone by just one store's mistake kiddies.
whatthe321 3 years ago
I agree, not all computer techs are scandalous bastards. That being said, I think the focus of this video was to point out the extortion of the average non-techie computer owner by the big box stores. Actually this shit might not even be the fault of the people that work at the stores, they probably have a lot of gay procedures they are supposed to follow to speed things up, and i bet they are not discouraged from giving a diagnosis that will lead to a costlier repair.
Bboydisplay 2 years ago
When turning on the computer, it outputted something like No Boot Device detected. So obviously you would just need to take a quick look at the hard drive. By seeing the IDE cable unplugged, all you'd need to do is plug it in and then see if the computer works again and obviously it did.
So $59.99+ just to push in a cable? Fascinating.
XFi6 3 years ago
Lol...I know I saw that too. The guy saying the power supply is bad is hilarious.
kurtz417 2 years ago
Computreat is better. You should look it up if your computer is down. They could do anything
daportraitboy 3 years ago
ok so they took out the IDE cable. Its nearly impossible for an IDE cable at that length to become 'loose' or unattached. If I had someone come into my PC repair store with a simple problem like that I would probably guess it is a setup. plugging it back in would be the first thing to do.... I would be reluctant to make people pay for such a simple service.
jaboston 3 years ago
any fun men in here?
billyjack1001 3 years ago
hence why you open your case before you go to some company. it could be something as simple as plugging a loose cable like they show here. i mean, its not rocket science, 1+1=2. if you see an unplugged cable plug the fucker back in. people are just so scared of computers cause they "seem" so complex. they really arent.
belIis 3 years ago
What if it's a laptop? Opening up a laptop would need to be done with more care. Although I once had a problem with my computer where it would turn on, but the screen remained black even if you waited for half an hour. When I took it in, they tested it without the batter in, and it still didn't work. They ended up having to put a new power inverter into it, and some new chips around the power inverter.
IslandCave 3 years ago
well yeah a laptop is a totally different story
belIis 3 years ago
there are numerous videos like this on Youtube and they are all the same - they get some IT pro to do something like change the BIOS settings or unplug the hard drive. Easy fix if you know that's the problem, but what tech would ever think that the customer had opened their case and unplugged the hard drive?? It's not about being dishonest, these techs just never thought to check for a loose cable and if you're really busy you have to check it in for a diagnostic so you can help the next in line

I agree, people who are certified did not study computer science to work for poverty rate saleries. Hire trained professionals and pay them properly, and you can then demand qualified professionals. Does anyone know how much it costs to keep a computer shop open? They actually loose money on PC repairs because of wasted man-hours alone. r31ncarnat3d 4 years ago
I'm sorry but GeekTek charges WAY too much for a lot of their services. But I guess with gas prices now a days, you've got to make up the difference somewhere.
duler700 4 years ago 3
I love how so many techs were saying the power supply was bad. They shouldn't have even been looking at power issues. Now I remember why I tell people to run from the Geek Squad like the plague at every chance I get.
The Geek Squad doesn't stock Power Supplies??? Since when? They're all ATX now, and those WERE ATX boxes! Even small, one-man PC shops carry at least a few of those. And if they don't have them, BestBuy DOES sell them! They just want your money.
geekofalltrades 4 years ago
Well, if the problem had actually been a power supply, the installation of a standard ATX unit would risk damage to the computer, believe it or not.
The computers used for the tests were all Dell Optiplex and these machines use a power supply that is physically ATX, but the pinouts on the connector to the motherboard are different.
I know as I have two Optiplex computers. This is in contrast to a Dell Dimension 4600 that I also have, which does use a standard ATX power supply.
Watcher3223 4 years ago
Really?
It doesn't make sense to change the pinout from standard ATX to non-standard, but I guess that wouldn't be a Dell first.
Thanks for letting me know! :)
geekofalltrades 4 years ago
The only reason for Dell's deviation at the moment was to, perhaps, earn more money on parts and service sales.
The way to tell is to check out the wires on the ATX connector. The colors mean the same things, but they are in different locations compared to the regular ATX supplies.
But, it doesn't change the fact that they still just want your money as evidenced by the fact that the "techs" didn't check the simple stuff first.
Watcher3223 4 years ago
I went to BBs Geek Squad to send in my PC for repairs after my inputs (monitor most notably) weren't being responsive. The initial diagnostic from just talking with the rep told me, "Sounds like a power supply problem." After watching this video, sounds like they are told to say that BS!

I am said to say I do it all the time too :(
My big one is hdd replacement.
weeksan 4 years ago
weeksan,
Why? We believe that customers are not as stupid as most stores treat them to be. Ultimately, the customer can and will find out if you are being or have been dishonest in your dealings.
Honesty is ALWAYS the best policy, period. But we are hoping that it pays off in future business as well.
GeekTeks 4 years ago
in all due respects yes honesty is god and will help your business, but what brings in profit? Attachments.
Ultimately the difference between Joe computer and a multi-billion dollar computer store (like the one I work for) is just that.
weeksan 4 years ago
GeekTeks 4 years ago
This is the very area we at Geek Teks are strong in. Even if there is no financial payoff, being honest with your customers is just the right thing to do and we as a company have committed ourselves to treat our customers with integrity regardless of the financial consequences. We believe that money is not the only thing in life worth striving for.
GeekTeks 4 years ago

r31ncarnat3d 4 years ago
In the auto industry, same with computers. If you tell them something else is wrong when it really isn't just to inflate the price then your commiting fraud and will be locked up. Any company that has to go through dirty tricks of deceiving people should be thrown in jail. Recomending upgrading the memory, bigger hard drive is honest. Not creating problems just to get more money.

My friends and I took a Computer Systems Networking class in high school and during those times we would go up to best buy occassionally and ask them a computer question (which we knew the answer to) and tried to guess how many wrong answers we would get. The results are unbelievable. Geek squad sucks, they don't even require certifications to work there!
huskerfan013 4 years ago
I've taken the A+ certification class before, which teaches you how to fix most computer problems and checking the wires is the first thing you're suppose to do, things tend to get lose at times. If it was the power supply like the guy on geek squad said, then they wouldn't even get an error message at all, the computer wouldn't even turn on.
Alphabigfoot 4 years ago
haha, exactly! Ive taken the A+ and Net+ (passed both :D) and diagnosing the power supply for an error message you get when it TURNS ON is hilarious.
huskerfan013 4 years ago
Not true. Depends on the mobo and PSU. But yeah, most of the time if it boots, it isn't a power supply problem.
LightBahamut 4 years ago
Thats right, but it can be the PSU, even if it's boots. Then it will shutdown without warning after a time, it dependt of how mutch power usage your computer need at a spesific time, like when the cd-rom starts etc. But then you may have a to small PSU. just information, not to critic.

Oh and the Circuit City answer may actually have been correct. The jumper could have been on the wrong pins, still a pretty easy fix though.

Fixing a computer is like anything else that the average person knows little about. Even if you find an honest person at an honest shop, you are paying for knowledge to repair the item.
