The term lived on and sometimes was applied to stuff ranging from Slade to Black Sabbath. It wasn't until the middle-late 70's when the NWOBHM gave birht to what we today call Heavy Metal which wasn't too closely related to blues rock even back in the times of Judas Priest and Iron Maiden.
The simultanesouly anguished and orgasmic sounds of the blues giving birth to metal.
