What Is Gamera?

I remember once trying to explain to a friend, who is in no shape or form a fan of any these kinds of films, how funny it is to me that in the Gamera movies it's common knowledge to all the child characters that he is "the friend of children," yet there's never any clear motivation or origin depicted for him being that. Then my friend blew my mind by replying something I never thought of before.

@GhostbustersRulez I'm affraid you are correct. In the Hesie Era Kiaju movies, Godzilla is nearly TWICE Gamera's hight according to both sets of movies 'SET DeSIGN' & 'SUIT DESIGN' ratios. Go' walks thru artillery like it was pebbles thrown by children. It hurts but he MOVES FOWARD. Gam' got shot down by ONE S.A.M. rocket. Go' heals almost instantly. Gam' has to heal over time with help by psychic human connection. Godzilla would overwhelm my favorite turtle before Gamera could recover. MORE-->

But whil Gam' has a hidden 'elbow' cutting weapon, Godzilla has a 'power-pulse' & is more agile. Gamera's plasma-fire balls are powerful, but we know Go' can swim for weaks thru' lava & take heavy artillery blasts. Gam' could not lift Go' but could knock Go' over--SO WHAT? Gam' absorbs fire & fictional 'earth-manna'(yea whatever...thats dumb & un-scientific). See:Go' & Lava. Go' can MORE-->

@GhostbustersRulez TO FINISH--> Godzilla can maintain a sustained atomic blast while Gamera has the plasmic fire-balls(plz refrain from dirty inuendo). Godzilla is larger & far more powerful than Gamera(who I think is REALY COOL! And was my fave' as a boy!). Both share a psychic link with young ladies, but Gamera NEEDS his link, where as Godzilla's link to Miki Sagusa is accidental & passive in nature. Size relationships in both sets of movies show Godzilla is the truly The King of the Monsters.

Considering they were aimed at children, most of the Showa Gamera films are pretty violent and bloody. And on that same note, Gamera was a pretty brutal fighter- dragging Barugon to his death by drowning, biting off Gyaos's foot, roasting Zigra alive... always biting, man. Actually makes Godzilla (who I prefer over Gamera) look like a fair, merciful fighter.

man, i have got to get the 90's movies on dvd. gamera was at the height of his badassness by 99. You know what he did then? He was battling iris, main bad guy of the 3rd 90's movie, and got one of his hands chaopped off. But, instead of being a bitch and running away after that, gamera stuck the stump of his arm out, and took the blunt of iris's attack with it, then absorbed that power and turned it into a working, buring, energy hand, which he used to deafeat iris! Hell yeah, all hail Gamera!

All of the Gamera movies need better DVD releases (ADV DVDs are good for the 90s trilogy, but the video needs anamorphic enhancement)
