The cool thing is #269 survives intact, somewhat. It was one of the CDAC freight rebuilds, but is currently preserved as ex-OHCR #460 along with sister 452 (formerly Amtrak #348). Pretty sure both units still have their older K5LA horns too.
@WhistlepostWP cool video I miss seeing this the Amtrak of my early teen years and now hertage equiptment I miss the old F40s the train I grew up on was the Texas Eagle but my mom and me rode this train a few times in the late 80s we rode the Eagle to Chicago and this to New Orleans than the Cresent to DC and somewhere up there we caught the old Broadway Ltd back to Chicago and the Eagle home I loved seeing the old IC in those days and hanging out in the vestabule shoting pictures on this train
@1985MANAmericana Yes, the first coach is the car from "The River Cities." Generally, a Horizon coach was set out in the "Rock Track" at Carbondale and the coach from KC at the same time.
That horn is really haunting when off in the distance...even though I hear it all the time when Norfolk Southern runs through where I live here in illinois...they have a few K5LA horns on their engines but nothing compares it to hearing it on amtrak espcially an F40PH...
@zackman86 - The new K series horns (like the K5LLA) don't have the beautiful sounding harmony that the original K5LAs had. The K5La sounded especially sweet on the F40s and AEM-7s since all 5 of the trumpets faced forward.
The elevated section south of central station, where the locomotive sits in downtown Memphis, is where the ancient concrete disintegrated this week, causing a massive collapse. The CNO's are currently taking the freight route and aren't following the riverfront line or going into the station at this point. Reconstructing the elevated sections will take millions, so unless it is patched up temporarily, this detour could be a long one.
Ah, BosworthJ, you have answered my question as to why the Chicago - Memphis ticket I was exploring had a short bus leg from some point outside to Amtrak in Memphis!
Oh yeah! Those Heritage cars were so comfortable and roomy. Much better riding qualities than the Amfleet cars. The silhoutte of the F40 is a snap shot work of art. Thank you for posting :)
Thank you so much for posting this video! I've wanted to see a vid of the Heritage CON, and finally someone posted it. One question: Why was diner service suspended for so long?
