Yes, there is severe poverty. But there are places in Italy, the US, Mexico, the Arab world and India that are much worse.
The standard of living in London is one of the best in all of Britain. I've been around quite a bit in London as well as in the UK in general. It's poor, but I've seen worse places.

A lot of the LDN estates are post war tower blocks - which are basically hell on earth to live in. Crime infested concrete shitholes.
