Notice some comments on here about PVL album, i think it was their worst album, the production is rubbish and the album versions of "EYF"and "SMILE" are a million miles away from The Falls UTTERLY MESMERISING MARCH 1983 PEEL SESSION sessions, i remember ptaping that whole jp show back then and falling off my chair in disbelief at how good those tracks were and still are.
Morley again "the fall has to have a elizabeth taylor richard burton element....a weird sexual element....a soap element". They gave too much of the doc to this prat spouting verbal diarorea.
I personally don't hear the similarities other than singing styles. Each are eclectic and idiosyncratic, but I never heard how Pavement blatantly ripped The Fall off. Pavement were WAY more melodic than The Fall, and were more of a melange of different influences and styles than just a carbon copy of The Fall, I always thought. But maybe I'm not listening to songs by The Fall that would invite an obvious comparison. Are there any you would recommend listening to?
Smith is comical and clever and entertaining and charismatic but so what? So are loads of people. I love some Fall stuff but some of it's crap. Powder Keg is really good but Eat Yerself fitter is utter shite.
I'm not going to be shallow and mark this comment down, but 'Eat Y'self Fitter' and the whole of 'Perverted By Language' is superb stuff - not sure where you're coming from. Granted, I was a latecomer, and didn't get into The Fall until I was about 15/16 *i.e 1994 ish* but listening back, PVL was a superb album, only outclassed by a few of their almost 30 studio albums. I'm impressed with Stephen Hanley in these interviews... I thought there might be some bitterness.
Mark E Smith is talented, yes. I saw the band in the late 80's and they were brilliant. But c'mon, the man is an alcoholic. I love him, but that eccentric behavior is more about alcoholic behavior.
Riley was only in for four years, less than Steve, Craig, Karl, Brix, Ben, Julia or Eleni! And as a DJ he talked over a Cravats session track unaired for 20 years, which makes him an evil enemy of music.
Morley's a twat. Brix is lovely.

The Fall are the only band where a woman getting involved was a brillaint thing.

It didn't do the Raincoats or Kleenex any harm!
But all-male Fall lineups have tended to be a bit dull. Too much testosterone.

Mark E. Smith likes Bo Diddley. So did Syd Barrett. That's cool.

And Bo Diddley liked what he saw of Mark E. Smith- that's also very cool.
