The north pole is not a land mass, it's just frozen water. Water freezing over does not change the volume of the water itself. It's like freezing water in a bathtub; the amount of water is still the same, some of it is just.. solid.

Think of it like this:
If you have a glass of water and ice filled up to the brim, some ice will be above the brim of the glass. As the ice above the surface melts, the only place it can go is into the glass,which is already full, so it will poor over the edge of the glass instead.
It's slightly more complicated (believe it or not, ice actually has greater volume than water does), but that's the general principle.

To ask why Mars is warming at the same rate as Venus is a silly question because Venus is NOT warming, it already has.

Field tests have shown that increased levels of CO2 do not necessarily lead to a corresponding level of plant growth. Plants require a balance of Sun, water, nutrients, and CO2. Adding CO2 to a plant growing in Antarctica will not have much of an effect because the plant would need more sunlight not CO2. Adding CO2 to a plant in a desert will have little effect because the plant needs water.

It can only be slowed down, at enormous costs (do you really think that the "go green" industry doesn't do it for money, just like the oil industry?) @TMOvids Arctic melting increases sea levels because the part of the ice not submerged into the water is not part of the ocean's volume. When the ice above sea level melts, it adds more volume into the ocean therefore increasing the sea level.
@XxAznDarknezZxX This is wrong, as the part of the ice above sea level does contribute to the sea level by its weight (if someone were to stand on the arctic, the sea level would rise, although he's above that level). The arctic follows the same model as ice in a glass of water. When it melts, the level goes down.
@TMOvids If you stand on the arctic, the sea level does rise but that's because you're pushing more volume (of the ice) into the ocean. But if all the ice melts, you melt the ice already in the ocean (which is already part of the volume) and the ice above (which is not part of the original volume but displaces water originally due to it pushing down the ice below it).

It's a mistake easily made, but think about it.
The north pole is not a land mass, it's just frozen water. Water freezing over does not change the volume of the water itself. It's like freezing water in a bathtub; the amount of water is still the same, some of it is just.. solid.

Think of it like this:
If you have a glass of water and ice filled up to the brim, some ice will be above the brim of the glass. As the ice above the surface melts, the only place it can go is into the glass,which is already full, so it will poor over the edge of the glass instead.
It's slightly more complicated (believe it or not, ice actually has greater volume than water does), but that's the general principle.

It's not just CO2 but also the trapped methane that is being released because of global warming, which traps even more heating because while methane is shorter lived than CO2 it's a more effective heat trapping greenhouse gas. Field tests have shown that increased levels of CO2 do not necessarily lead to a corresponding level of plant growth. Plants require a balance of Sun, water, nutrients, and CO2. Adding CO2 to a plant growing in Antarctica will not have much of an effect because the plant would need more sunlight not CO2. Adding CO2 to a plant in a desert will have little effect because the plant needs water.

@JonThm I hope you realize how incorrect of a statement this truly is. Firstly, we know that carbon dioxide levels have drastically gone up over the past several centuries. Any graph depicting atmospheric CO2 will show that. Secondly, photosynthesis could not maintain constant CO2 levels during that time because of the massive deforestation that has happened. With the elimination of that sink (forests) for CO2, carbon dioxide levels would rise dramatically. Basic science.

A large eruption is widely blamed for the mini ice-age we had in the dark ages where crops failed and we had a significant human die-off. It's as if you are downloading a large file from the internet and see that the download speed slows down and keeps slowing down at one point, making you think that the file won't download at all. @Wrbna What you mean to say is kill all the poor people, right? We already know we can reduce what out output of greenhouse gas is without killing off poor people. The problem is rich people would have to stop raping poor countries and start regulating industry, which is well known they don't want to do. We can't teraform Mars because Republicans don't want to fund NASA or schools were our kids could be helped to become smart enough to work for NASA. Tech to teraform doesn't exist, dummy.

That teraform reference was merely to imply that if mankind was designed to dominate everything around them, they have lost the chance to escape to another planet and watch the Earth wash itself from a distance. Now, instead of thinking about the future and damage control, everyone seems to focus on avoiding the inevitable, which costs the same amount of money, maybe more, than what is made in the oil industry. Although you may be right about "killing"...

It's sick, I know that, but the world needs a supervillain of some kind. There is no better way to cooperate and fight for your own survival and the preservation of your surroundings than by sharing tips on how not to melt in the sunlight, or freeze in the shadows... can'd do it on your own, even if you're rich. @Wrbna You do understand that Mars is much smaller than the Earth, right? It isn't even twice the size of the moon. The cost to make Mars habitable without bio-spheres (if it is feasible at all) would be astronomical, pun intended. Do you want to pay for it? It would be cheaper and more sensible to repair the planet we already live on. Wait, you mean we should only send smart and rich people like you to Mars and leave the poor here to die? That is what it sounds like to me.

anyone that believes in global warming, is a complete idiot. there are no facts. coldest winter in the u.s. in 2008. one of the snowiest winters in the us in 2010-2011. the climate goes in 20 year cycles. one volcano explosion has put out more c02 then the humans have in our entire existence. so everyone shut up already and get over it

What you don't understand is that warming is a global trend and drives weather patterns, which means more snow because storms have more energy. Makes you wonder why we have so many powerful storms hitting us recently, huh? Or, maybe you aren't smart enough to wonder about anything. No facts, like the gulf stream is warming up or anything significant like that?

@ZX2Fast The gulf stream is warming and cooling, just as it has been doing for tens of thousands of years. There is no way anyone can ever stop it. It can only be slowed down, at enormous costs (do you really think that the "go green" industry doesn't do it for money, just like the oil industry?) Of course the effects are global, hence "GLOBAL warming." I have NO idea why you had to point that out to me, since I have already said that I am not from the US.

@TMOvids Arctic melting increases sea levels because the part of the ice not submerged into the water is not part of the ocean's volume. When the ice above sea level melts, it adds more volume into the ocean therefore increasing the sea level.

@XxAznDarknezZxX This is wrong, as the part of the ice above sea level does contribute to the sea level by its weight (if someone were to stand on the arctic, the sea level would rise, although he's above that level). The arctic follows the same model as ice in a glass of water. When it melts, the level goes down.

@TMOvids If you stand on the arctic, the sea level does rise but that's because you're pushing more volume (of the ice) into the ocean. But if all the ice melts, you melt the ice already in the ocean (which is already part of the volume) and the ice above (which is not part of the original volume but displaces water originally due to it pushing down the ice below it).

global warming is a big fruad, im sorry, 97% is a lie, if you just look at the science, and the facts. climax change is a part of a bigger universal problem, solar flares. and a peek in the sun. this is what making it become hotter, it has nothing to do with Co2 out put at all.
co2 ,makes up lets then 1% of the atmosphere. we are just in a pattern, and it will peak 2013, and by 2030 we will all be worried about a ice age.
