Cod fish are known to have worms. As long as your fish is fully cooked it just adds more protein. They're not harmful as tapeworms from freshwater fish.
no shit- you need to really check- most fish, and land animals have parsites. Usually they get them out while cleaning, but not all. They'll die and are hormless when cooked, but they are gross to see. No food- even vegetables, is totally safe and harmless.
This is not a big deal! Lots of fish have little worms in them; fishmongers usually pick them out before they sell them because people don't like to see them. Once in a while, they miss one. The worms will die when you cook the fish properly, and they are harmless.

Do some research. There are plenty of bacteria, microbes and parasites that are NOT killed by freezing - and also, what has freezing got to do with sushi?!
i just found a living cod worm in $50 fresh wild salmon from safeway - they gave me a refund but explained that parasites are in all meat products. I JUST gave up red meat last week. Maybe no more fishies for me .... ich. supposedly cod worms won't hurt you as long as they are dead. But what about their eggs? And what about Sushi?
Cod worms are practically in every cod. You just tweeze them out, it's no big deal. What we do at the CIA, is we put them on the candlebox and just tweeze em out.dylanotto has a good point, if its still alive, its really fresh.
So...did you go back to Whole Foods and ask for a refund? Any store should give one in such a case, but Whole Foods stores in general will give you one for almost anything. I'll give you that it's gross, but as several persons above mentioned, it is a naturally occuring parasite. What's more gross, a naturally occuring, but still gross worm, or loads of chemicals and drugs in your food? At least Whole Foods makes a commitment to not pass on any of that crap.
Thanks to all for your comments. The day we discovered it, we did some research and found (as you mentioned) that such a worm can be naturally occurring. However, I would like to point out one unmutable fact: WORMS IN FOOD ARE STILL GROSS!!!!
Yep, fish are real animals and can have parasites. As the chef said these round worms are naturally occurring and pretty common. That one in your video, Phocanema decipiens, is so common it is called the "cod worm." They are often found in larger fish that have longer life spans such as cod, halibut, Chilean sea bass, monk fish, etc. Good job checking your fish, but if you like cod you will have to keep it up.
These parasites (nematodes) are naturally occuring. The fish get it from eating crustacean that have eaten the larvae or eggs of nematodes. The likelyhood of you getting fish with a parasite is the same no matter where you bought it, or if you caught it yourself.

(Nearly) all meats has some parasite in them. You cook them and it kills them. Its all protein anyways. No harm.

i just throw the fish in ice water and the worms crawl out :) no problem

worms and bacteria are killed through freezing, that is why sushi is safe

Most cod has worms. Usually they are dead,so you rarely actually see them. Even if you could, most people don't look that closely.
If you don't want to eat worms, don't eat cod.

Oh my god a worm in a cod!
BTW it's still alive that means the fish is really fresh.

Cod bought anywhere is pretty much chemical-free. But Whole foods seems to have a problem with this.

I think it's cool you found something of such magnitude...but in the end it's all protein.
