The directors cut has been on DVD 3 times. Criterion Edition, Robocop Trilogy (MGM), and 2 disc 20th anniversary (also has the original). Nothing against those who love it but I have no plans to switch to Blu-Ray. I even read and it turns out that the RoboCop Blu-Ray looks no different from the DVD. Though its not anamorphic widescreen, I think the Image Entertainment version of RoboCop (the first version shown here) has the best sound of all the RoboCop DVD's I've seen. This is only my opinion.
in the beginning like 12 minutes in when the first robot is shooting that guy, that's extended too... he gets shot way more times after he hits the table. way more blood haha
There's another difference between the 2007 extended cut (the one shown here) and the director's cut. You can't see it but in this version, the scene ends with a close up of Lewis saying "Murphy" and cringing after seeing him dead and then it cuts to the next scene with the helicopter. However if I'm not mistaken in the Criterion Director's Cut, doesn't the scene end with a wide shot of Lewis kneeling down next to Murphy's mutilated body and crying?
I haven't seen the Director's cut on BluRay yet, but I do own the Criterion version on DVD. In the Criterion version there is also an extended scene with ED 209 malfunctioning in the board room. As Mr. Kinney lays on the mockup of Delta City ED 209 continues shooting his corpse with blood and chunks going all over the table. Both the scene you have and this ED 209 scene gave the original cut of Robocop an X Rating.
wow, that guy got shot up and shot up and shot up and shot up and shot up and shot up and shot up and shot up and shot up and shot up and shot up and shot up and was still alive screaming.
Is it just me or have they re-dubbed (yet again) Murphy's screaming for the Blu-Ray? I own the Criterion DVD and the MGM trilogy box set and his screaming sounds different in both versions.
@welshfilmbuff Yeah I was wondering the same thing. I have the same 20th anniversary 2 disc edition but on DVD not Blu-Ray. I've seen the original director's cut of Murphy's death and it sounds different from this Blu-Ray version. Was the Blu-Ray and my DVD version just the original director's cut with the sound re-edited?
It looks that way. I personally don't own the Blu-Ray, as I haven't heard many good things about it. In all honesty, the old Criterion disc is probably the best. Not only does the screaming sound more natural, but it's in the correct 1.66 :1 aspect ratio. The MGM discs are 1.85:1.
@welshfilmbuff Really so Robocop was filmed in a 1.66 :1 aspect ratio? I've read that the Criterion edition contains a non anamorphic widescreen transfer of the movie and is therefore windowboxed on an HDTV. Is that true?
Unfortunately, that IS the case. It looked stretched on a widescreen TV (haven't watched it on my HDTV). As for the actual aspect ratio, 1.66 :1 was used, because it used to be a popular format for European filmmakers. Seeing as Verhoeven and Jost Vocano are Dutch and German respectively, it makes sense that they would shoot with that ratio in mind, though I think it was nonetheless exhibited in 1.85 :1, because most American theaters are set up that way.
I have the criterion "rated X" version which is essentially the Blu-ray Director's cut. I was pretty surprised at the unbroken shot of the peter weller right before "redd" blows the back of his head off.
what do u think the chances are of RoboCop 2011 or 2012???
p.s. do you have a vid demonstrating Johnny Cage's MK1 triple decapitation?
Nice comparision btw. I do prefer the cover on the DVD box as apposed to the cover on the BluRay box. It might be because it was how i originally saw it. Nice video!
@renbrave hahaha, now that you've mentioned it he does sound like Steve Buscemi. Reminds me of the scene at the beginning of Desperado when he was telling the Mariachi anecdote in the bar.
I have both the special edition DVD, and the definitive edition DVD and both include directors cuts with all the content seen in the blu-ray version u played. That DVD u own is the old 1998 release which only included the theatrical print of the film. My 2004 special edition, and 2007 Defintive Edition DVD's include it all.
I remember when this movie came out...Was extremely violent for the time..Even now you see this movie and still shock you in some scenes...But of course is one of the best movies of the 80's and a sci-fi classic!!!!
there is a criterion and directors cut on normal DVD, my question is does the bluray have all the features from the DC dvd and criterion? cause i know the crit edition of robocop comes with a boat load of features
nice videos on mk im restoreing a cabniet as well but yeah i have the blueray edition you should look at the old laser disk creation edition of robocop its the same as blue ray lol film wise sad they did a crappy job with the restore if only laserdisk did 1080p :)

I prefer the original, always have. It flows better, and the audio edits on the director's cut just sound silly.
