The seven deadly sins were not in the bible. They were created around the 5th century by the catholic church. So what you mean is, Pope Gregory 'nailed the sins'.
Dude, I get where you're coming from. Hey, did you just smoke a joint before the video? Yeah, self awareness, the tree of knowledge, sins. Why are we so fucking smarter than animals?? Is it just a random freak event? Is it just like this in our own little universe? I dunno. Sagan or somebody wrote that there is something marvelous out there just waiting to be discovered.
wrath: our biological defense mechanism kicking in, in a world where doesn't need to.
envy: bad for yourself if you get caught up in it i guess, but it can be a motivator for some.
pride: per se, being proud isn't a bad thing, but the way the sinful aspect of it is described, sure it's bad if you have too much of it and ignore the good work of others.
over all, i'd say this is a list of things like many other things, that show us that excess is bad, moderation in most things are good.
I agree with the others here. Sin is non-existent and a concept meant to suppress people against their nature. Pride is not a sin, it is the result of a healthy ego state. Lust is the thing that makes sex possible. Uncontrolled, it can be damaging, but so can almost anything. Gluttony has few redeeming qualities, but it is not a sin. Sloth is good in moderation - we can all use a break from time to time. Anger can be protective as well as destructive. Vanity is just a product of being content.
they nailed those ok... but y doesn't the bible say anything against pedophilia...? in fact, looking at what's written in it - the bible practically condones pedophilia while saying homosexuals are sinners for being born so and a whole lot of other shit...
Sorry, couldn't disagree with you more. I think you aught to expand a little more one what sins you think they "nailed". Because, where I'm sitting, they "nailed" very little of what I would call moral.
They didn't even come close to getting 'sin' right.
The bible suggests that bad behaviour is something you can codify in a simplistic set of rules with a fixed set of consequences.
The real world doesn't and shouldn't work like that. There are extenuating circumstances to some behaviours and some things must be judged on a case by case basis.
Their absurd classification of certain sexual behaviours as sinful is just one demonstration of how wrong they got it.
Sin is a theological concept though. It doesn't exist in a world without god, and nor should any kind of moral guide (outside of the legal system). Most sane people can distinguish right from wrong without a guidebook or a hollow threat (in christianity's case, hell). Social issues that come about from immoral behaviour are threat enough, are they not?
I'm a big fan, Pfunk, but I have to disagree with you on both your points.
1) Other animals are conscious, and nearly every advanced vertebrate animal has all of the same parts of the brain that we humans do, but they are but some have a greater ratios of one or more parts when compared to others.
2) The concept of sin is bullshit. Glutony, for example, is usually the result of compensating for poor emotional health, something we currently don't understand very well, so no fault on the eater.
(continued) If we really don't have effective tools to heal someone who is depressed, why judge those people. Lust is another example; many people who are "nymphomaniacs" just happen to to really enjoy, need, and love the intimacy. How is that bad?
My point is that 99.8% of all of us have deep-seated issues that we will likely carry from the day we are born till the day we die, and our society has very very poor tools and mechanisms to heal these in our populace. How can these be judged sins?
Killing someone for working on the Sabbath (Numbers 15:32-36), killing people for witchcraft (Exodus 18:22), no graven images (Exodus 20)? I don t know, man....There are 613 rules that the OT explicitly lays out in the Pentateuch, many of which any morally upstanding person would observe regardless, the rest of which opprobrium might be a better word category for.
They did get it right but it is nothing for which to venerate or acknowledge them.
It says that the church should be your life. You should not enjoy food, you should not want to do better for yourself or your family and should not recognize those more successful than you or try to be equal to your peers and should not be happy when you do succeed.
The status quo must be maintained, nothing you do is significant nor does it matter. That is the 7 deadly sins in use.
Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Sloth, Wrath, Envy and Pride
Every basic human need and emotion is a sin according to the Catholic church. Everything one does is a sin. These are not in reference to these specific modern definitions of these words but have a deeper philosophical/psychological meaning and use.
The Catholic chruch, well many sources, boiled human existence down to 7 broad things that humans do and labeled them as damning sins.

I'm afraid i got to second soundbite here, still i hear your soundbites in some songs, like in 'Cubed', so you got a lot of credit.
ah yes, and i am not disappointed, since another thing they 'nailed' was man's 'fallibility; hehehe ;p
The consciousness is a bit weird though, since if someone says 'use your god given brain', then it was not exactly 'given', hehe.

Fcuk, i meant i got to second soulshift14, not soundbite.
Well, man IS fallible hahahaahah ;)

nailed the sins, i guess, they decided something was a sin, and said that doing "sinful" things was bad.
lust: biological, not sure how that's bad.
gluttony: a bi-product of our survival mechanism if anything i guess, cavemen couldn't be sure if they got food tomorrow, so eat while you can
greed: same deal as gluttony or at least related
sloth: that's bad, but anyone who is "guilty" of it, is more likely to be suffering from depression then anything else

Agreed. I also like "do unto others what you would have others do unto you"; works well in almost all situations.
