My Grandfather, Jack Allen was New York Bureau chief for Mutual for a time in the 1950s. He stayed with WOR in the 1960s. Do any recording of him exist anywhere?
The "World Today" theme has been used more recently on Current TV's "Countdown with Keith Olbermann", as a music bed for the oddball news video segment "Time Marches On".
This theme sounds like the work of Maury Laws (musical director/supervisor and sometime writer on many of the Rankin/Bass cartoons). Uncertain of who really wrote this...I'm adding this to my mp3 collection and to a future mixed CD as an opening.
Dennis, thanks so very much for posting this and your other MBS memories. I worked for three Mutual network affiliates in the Midwest. And I surely miss Mutual. Are there Mutual get-togethers that we other broadcasters could attend? I know there was a ten-year event that ChicaBoombox posted here on YouTube.
"And that's it today for 'America in the Morning'. I'm Jim Bohannon in Washington, and THIS... is the MU-Tu-al.... BROAD-Cas-ting Sys-tem.... (BEE-doop)"; (Now he outcues it as "This is Westwood One", but since Westwood/Mutual/NBC-Radio (or what WAS Mutual and NBC-Radio) is now part of the CBS/Viacom/Paramount/Westwood/Infinity/etc. "family", why can't he close it out with "This is CBS, the co-LUM-Bi-a Broad-cas-ting Sys-tem"???)
Thank you for this. I had been looking for a while for the lead-in to the Mutual hourly news. It, as I remember it, was like the beginning of this, but a little crisper and sharper. I still play in in my head when dramatic events happen!

This reminds me of the old background music for the old Rankin/Bass cartoons! What a tremendous yet a joyous theme! Thank you very much Dennis!

I use one of their sounders as my ringtone along with ABC's and CBS' news sounders. Entire bodies turn around when my phone rings! :-)
