I just saw this today and was blown the fuck away. A very special movie. Aside from the cinematography the acting was also great on that little girl's part especially.
This is one of the most artistic, beautifully shot films. The concepts of the fantasy characters were great, but could have been developed more, such as their abilities (in the last act), and the ultimate antagonist (fight? if you'd call it that) left much to be desired IMO. Otherwise, this is a surreal, underrated film; inspired by the masterpiece BARAKA at times (but totally different), and a nice follow up to his last movie, "The Cell" from 2000. Tarsem should direct more films!
everything on this film is exquisit, the cinematography is just awsome!!! the epic pictures are breathtaking, excellence. oh and did I mention the acting......the music? Enchanting
Your not an idiot. Man I was so excited when I read your comment I nearly chucked my coffee. Anyway I was doing some research on the soundtrack and a part of me fears that it may never be released.
Near true white daughter, looks like fun; I promise to rent it, even though, nae scots hero, return favor, rent Braveheart, watch it in couple of goes it's long for the youngsters tae unerstan, love times 4
Tarsem certainly has a unique surrealist style. It's hard to be a unique director thesedays so I respect the man's talent in bringing cinematic surrealism to the masses.
The little girl and the man are sharing a hospital ward; the man is a stuntman who's paralyzed from the waist down as the result of a fall. He starts telling the girl a story so that she'll sneak him enough morphine to kill himself with, but eventually she becomes involved to the point that she fights for the salvation of both his characters and his life.
Does anybody know what the music used in the preview is? I know it's by Beethoven, but I don't know what it's called.
Yes, it's the second movement of Beethoven's Symphony No. 7 (the movement is called Alegretto, for the tempo setting). It's one of my favorite pieces of music -- and a favorite of many others as well. You can find it all over the web and here the movement in its entirety. (Even wikipedia has a link.)
Saw it 3 times at the theater. Tarsem is a genius and I commend him on his beautiful creation. I wish I could meet him and thank him for it, it was a gift to all of us!
Saw it today!!! because my friend & I have been to many of the locations in Rajasthan India. She also recommended it to me knowing that I like non-commercial films of this nature. (Fantasy-fairytale-innocent-visual unique)Most of the places with Indian Fortresses & palaces I visited in Jodphur. Seeing them brought back magical memories.
i just saw this last night, completely on a whim, based on the movie poster. this was AWESOME. this is THE movie to see right now, i'm going again tomorrow.
In Roy's (Lee Pace) mind the story is a western so the ex slave is supposed to be like the ones in early America. But he is something comepletly different in alexandria's mind.
Because the little girl is picturing in her mind her indian friend from work who gave her the elephant, whom you see at the end in the orange grove and is in fact the indian from the story. you also see the mystic next to him.
When I say he is supposed to be native american, I mean according to Roy. I know the little girl mistakes him to be an asian indian. That's the fun part of the movie.
So, as he is telling the story, he intends the character to be a Native American, this is clear in his description.
However, the fantasy sequences are representative of the girl's imagination, and she interpreted the Indian as being an Asian Indian. This is because she has friends who are Eastern Indians, so it fits her frame of reference.
It's a lovely little play on terms, and I don't blame you for missing it.
this movie was so beautiful, it makes you laugh and makes you cry..such a beautiful and tragic film...must see the little girl will tear your heart out

He's "supposed" to be both.

Squaw - Native American woman
Wigwam - Native American lodge
The movie in which the stuntman works also has a Native American who strokes his brow.
But I don't see any reason why he is supposed to be an Asian Indian even if the story is set in India.
