Are you guys serious? Is it this hard to be an architect? I thought being architect was going to work one day of the week, layering 3-4 bricks for a house (if that) and then enjoying the rest of the week off with a 100,000 check...
As an 3rd year arch student, most people in my class design some funky buildings. My philosophy has always been to design something that people would actually want, while at the same time putting in some subtle changes. I like to keep my designs down to earth.
I am an Architect by degree, and practiced for a short time. Because of #1, I quit and started waiting tables while I taught myself software engineering at the public library. @micimackoful Give up while you can. I'm in this for 3 weeks and i've decided to switch to economics. Gets more money, less stressful, easier, studying costs less, and your HANDS and EYES don't hurt like hell!
@Shackize You'll say that when you're really old, grey and wrinkly. You hear about young billionaires, but you'll never hear about a young famous architect. Never. It takes time, that's just how it is!
@MsBorntobeme Generally, you have to choose because each require different level of training and depth of understanding. However, it is more 'common' to become an interior designer (ID) after qualifying as an Architect rather than vice-verse. Often though, ID train-up / develop to be Architects - David Adjaye is an example. Simply put, Architects know more about building structures than ID, also, obtaining approvals etc is tougher for Architects... but ID often make more money. Hope that helps

I love that half the comments are from people just studying architecture pretending they totally empathise with this video already or know why it'll be different for them. almost as funny as the video itself. good work!
I've heard Zaha Hadid talk about how painful the work of an architect can be, but it's a labour of love. It's not a career you can fall into. Hey I'm getting to bed before midnight....the first time this semester!
Funny because it is so true. Hope you don't mind that we put an embed of this video on our site for our members. You can view it at OutsourceArchitecture [dot] org
Hey Doug, I've seen your videos and if i didn't know you were an architect I'd say you'd never be one. Please answer me, why are you still an architect?
i like what this guy have said... because we need to be humble... we need to struggle to be professional, we need to discover something everytime,, as a student im really inspired of this,, and above all we need to have faith in God to achieve something because God is the one who gives us oppurtunities,, ill work hard to be an architect, because im inspired to the greatest architect of our world of universe and everyliving creature and thing, our one and only Lord architect Lord Jesus
i like what this guy have said... because we need to be humble... we need to struggle to be professional, we need to discover something everytime,, as a student im really inspired of this,, and above all we need to have faith in God to achieve something b ecuse God is the one who gives us oppurtunities,, ill work hard to be an architect, because im inspired to the greatest architect of our world of universe and everyliving creature and thing, are our one andonly Lord architect Lord Jesus
I don't care what this guy says. I've been an architect for over 20 years now. I absolutly love my job. Sometimes it can be a little time consuming, but hey! I love it.
My husband is a doctor so it can be quite stressful and we may not see eachother for ages, but after a job I have loads of time with him.
@alyspugh I think "this guy" is really fun, funny and interesting! I don't think what he is saying means that he doesn't love what he is doing. Being able to make fun of yourself is an admirable quality. :) Plus he can ride a unicycle....hello!!
@poop78412 Yes but he said I LOVE my job EVERYDAY, I am sure you do not love your job every single day! if you do DAYUM! you are a lucky mang mang! haha
Haha! Scarily true, but that doesn't change things for me. I'm still gonna be an architect hopefully. As a student I'm already broke and sleep deprived, lol.
=] If everyhing goes to plan for me and I become an architect when I finish school and college and what not; then I think I may have to find a way to get one of those sentences in there. lol
what is success? if your goal in life is to be rich, then maybe you should reconsider why we humans exist. I'm a second year student. Its the hardest thing I've ever done. Ups and downs, with unbelievable pressure to spend stupid amounts of time in studio. I'm not good at math, I hate not sleeping. But I'm learning a lot-thats all that matters. The career is well rounded. I pursue it because I feel great when I do my best. Do your best and you will be successful.
@jmbmp2 Hey just waited to say i am no my last week of my first year studying Architecture and i completely agree with you :) I love it but it really is the most stressful and hardest thing i have done. I know year 2 will be harder :)
@jmbmp2 Well said mate. Im half way through 3rd year, and 2nd year was probably the most challenging to date. The bar is raised so much higher in 3rd year, so 2nd year is really where you learn your craft and all the skills you learn in 1st year get used together and polished. You slowly get used to the lack of sleep, you eventually learn to do things quicker; but you'' never be satisfied. No matter how well you design something, you'll always wonder how u can do it better.
@CatAllStars some of theme won amazing amounts of money like Norman Foster with the HSBC building ( he won 17.9% of 230´700,000 USD), but that happens every century =P
@CatAllStars It's low pay for many because clients are hard to get, there's so many established architects. If you think you are talented and willing to work really hard go for it.
@MrROTD thank you, I work extremely hard and am never statisfied, not even at the point where i am finished, to define is to limit so really there is no finish. With the right kind of education i could become talented in this profession, i mean i am only 4th year at highschool but i am reading books by stephen hawkings and getting top marks - 9 subjects all 1's. Physics and Art are my joys in life and i think architecture combines both beautifully-what relation do you have to architecture?
Nice opening:) Haha:) Can you make a movie where you design or architect a nice "modern house"? Pleace! It would have been so cool! Like a modern house... you know.... modern;) Pleace
if you are an architect with two babies crying a lot in very night and day.....stop dreaming sleep alot.....))))being rich with designing while thinking tehe whole world economic conditions...ıt is a dream too....but thanks god for everything that I AM ALIVE AND BREATHİNG......

Do a video called ''Top 10 things you'll never hear most architecture students say... in college''
Here's a few enonciates:
-I genuinely love architecture!
-I'm not a pretentious showoff and sitting here in this classroom for that very reason... at all.
-I take no pleasure from watching other people fail!
-Yes.... yes... I wanna hear your thought, my dear teammate!
Screw college, people there are as amature as they were in high school.

If you don't mind me asking: How much do you get paid?
zachboyle54 11 months ago 5
@zachboyle54 I do. watch the 'path of an architect' series.
howtoarchitect 11 months ago 2
@zachboyle54 Watch the third part for salary. ( 35-58k $ 52-65k $ 62-80$ depending on how experienced you are.)
But salary is not the most important thing for an architect, is it.

:) Plus he can ride a unicycle....hello!!

stoob1969 1 year ago
what is success? if your goal in life is to be rich, then maybe you should reconsider why we humans exist.

GIMGIMG 1 year ago
@GIMGIMG ah well then. lets hope it happens more than every century-infact i will make sure that it happens more often :L
CatAllStars 1 year ago
@CatAllStars It's low pay for many because clients are hard to get, there's so many established architects. If you think you are talented and willing to work really hard go for it.
MrROTD 1 year ago
@MrROTD thank you, I work extremely hard and am never statisfied, not even at the point where i am finished, to define is to limit so really there is no finish. With the right kind of education i could become talented in this profession, i mean i am only 4th year at highschool but i am reading books by stephen hawkings and getting top marks - 9 subjects all 1's. Physics and Art are my joys in life and i think architecture combines both beautifully-what relation do you have to architecture?
