  • What would be the top ten things that a Civil/Structural Engineer would never say... Lol!!!

  • cierto LOL

  • shit.... number one is bad.

  • Do a video called ''Top 10 things you'll never hear most architecture students say... in college''

    Here's a few enonciates:

    -I genuinely love architecture!

-I'm not a pretentious showoff and sitting here in this classroom for that very reason... at all.

-I take no pleasure from watching other people fail!

-Yes.... yes... I wanna hear your thought, my dear teammate!

Screw college, people there are as amature as they were in high school.

  • I just finished my first semester and i'm already sleep-deprived and depressed. What have I gotten myself intoo :'(

  • true story

  • haha true =D

especially sleeping part :D my big bro is an architect ^^ so I know

    I like ur videos Doug =) u r funny ^^

  • No one in any profession says that shit

  • No one in any profession says that shit

  • thanks my dreams are now in the trash!

  • thats why i became a shaman-architect.. lol

  • totally true... i'm a architect...

  • I designed more than 300 buildig(34 yearsold) and ı am still alive...enjoy your job..and life....

  • I'm a graphic designer and did a search for Information Architecture and ran across your vids and I have to say... you are EXTREMELY INTERESTING to listen to AND .... love love love the speed drawing. I'm freak'n memorized. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and ideas. Love your sense of humor as well. Keep up the great work!

  • This is why you use an Architectural Technologist... lol

  • hahaha I think every architecture student agrees with #2 and #6 :)

  • I had doug patt as an instructor once and i gotta say he def doesnt crush dreams and hes honestly one of the best instructors i have ever had i havent had him in 2 years and i still get on here and watch his videos

  • Are you guys serious? Is it this hard to be an architect? I thought being architect was going to work one day of the week, layering 3-4 bricks for a house (if that) and then enjoying the rest of the week off with a 100,000 check...

  • This guy is just a dreamcrusher :O thumb up if u agree

  • @PinkLithiuma see my blog on tumblr called 48hot. link on my youtube channel. the post is called Top 20 reasons to be an architect. enjoy!

  • @howtoarchitect Awww now ur starting to make me not become a engineer architecture :(

Cuz once im one i wanna be rich, and at the end... =(

  • @howtoarchitect ok thank u so much !

  • @PinkLithiuma wasjustgoingtosaythatuntilliscrolleddown

  • @PinkLithiuma, but its true!!! One thing he forgot however, " Those city plan checkers always agree with the architect's methods."

  • Good video

  • its not just huge pay cheques that matter..i am an architecture student ..i am in the end of my 1st year.

and yes i do hav sleepless nights..

but everyday i feel so happy..

i donno why.. i feel i am living my dream... dream ...dont let the others let u down just accept the fact that they cannot dream..

  • @ashoornable That's because you're in your first year dude! Keep on dreamin! Moahahahhaah

  • well I am getting to much sleep but only because i skip most of the classes :D

  • i never going to say 2im rich"

thats why i will study to be an iingenieer

    :)

  • As an 3rd year arch student, most people in my class design some funky buildings. My philosophy has always been to design something that people would actually want, while at the same time putting in some subtle changes. I like to keep my designs down to earth.

  • I am an Architect by degree, and practiced for a short time. Because of #1, I quit and started waiting tables while I taught myself software engineering at the public library. I am now a Software Architect and had a good laugh at this video as all of them are so true in my current field, so long as you sub "software" for "house/building" and scratch #1. --- Okay I better head to the slip, my friends are waiting for me at my boat :)

  • @bavestyle So is it that bad? I actually started studying it (I guess the fame and money myth got to me) but ain't sure if it's the thing I wanted to do - seems today there are way too many of those and the pay isn't "as" good either. Is the economical side that bad?

  • Do modern architects get told to deliberately design buildings that are as ugly/weird/degenerate as possible? Compare the shit that gets built now with what our ancestors left us. This degenerate shit you are filling our countries with is embarrasing.

  • @stepheng1483 No, it is not intentional. But I, personally, would find it hilarious if it was. If I ever get there, I'd love to troll people with bad architecture and telling them that they're uncultured. Unfortunately, that requires an understanding of what good architecture is =( Hopefully I'll get there one day.

  • dude it was just an hilarious joke.. calm down.. and btw your stupid, i come with a joke the puts the personal life of professions in perspective and all you talk about is women... fyi i said " not gay ENOUGH"... AND i get most of the chicks because i excel in school and engineers are "listed" as "boyfriend material "

  • architect: when you don't have the balls to be an engineer, and you're not gay enough to be an interior designer. :P

  • @2Garyable you are just an asshole and maybe a filthy, frustrated enginner who has a very difficult possibilities to get the women that we reject, most of the architect are straight we like women but when you see an architect to that happens to be gay at lease has the balls to recognize not like you...

  • @2Garyable hahaha

  • "I learned everything I needed to know in college". Ha, that's something I've got to show to my teachers

  • All your videos are so negative towards being an architect, thanks for the inspiration.

  • HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! True.

  • My dad is a architect, and in his case numbers 6~1 are not true. but yeah, most

  • Well thanks for bashing what i wanted to do for a living .... -_-

  • i think no. 10 should be no. 1

  • #4, #2 = very funny! #1 = really?

  • #4 hahahaha - loved that one.

  • Doug, you rock

  • c'me on, "my clients are the best", "I love my job everyday!". "I'm getting way too much sleep", are some of my most popular phrases! Thanks a lot for this video, at least it made laugh out loud! Greetings to all the architects!

  • lolz number seven

  • oh well crap... im starting architecture ba in like 3 weeks. so this was pretty scary :S

  • @micimackoful Give up while you can.

  • @micimackoful Give up while you can. I'm in this for 3 weeks and i've decided to switch to economics. Gets more money, less stressful, easier, studying costs less, and your HANDS and EYES don't hurt like hell!

  • why did i watch this! i'm starting my course in a week and i'm already having doubts...

  • Well that put a damper on my childhood dreams

  • architect illuminati

  • Things you'll never hear from architectural student's friend/s : "are you free tomorrow?" LOL

  • wow... im going to start studying Architecture in less than a month and now i find out that im never going to say 'i'm rich' shit

  • @Shackize Welcome to the club mate... how's it going over there?

  • @Shackize You'll say that when you're really old, grey and wrinkly. You hear about young billionaires, but you'll never hear about a young famous architect. Never. It takes time, that's just how it is!

  • @Shackize It's worth it.

  • @Shackize Maybe cause we are humble? :D

  • @fareezharis yeah, i agree with you

  • @Shackize

I just finished studying 1 week ago and after 5 years in architecture school ALL 10 Are 100% true :(

  • Lol this was really funny. Kinda sad too as I'm a student of architecture :D yayz

  • hahahahahahahahahhahahahahah

  • Most of those apply to any profession with little or no modification.

  • bastard just put my self esteem down haha

  • watching this video, i realized i made the right choice, dropping out of architecture and studying civil engieneering.

  • I dont want to be an architect any more

  • HAHAHA, Love number 3 and 2. :D

  • certainly true

  • can u please tell me if you can be an architect and an iterior designer at the same time or do u have to choose one

  • @MsBorntobeme Generally, you have to choose because each require different level of training and depth of understanding. However, it is more 'common' to become an interior designer (ID) after qualifying as an Architect rather than vice-verse. Often though, ID train-up / develop to be Architects - David Adjaye is an example. Simply put, Architects know more about building structures than ID, also, obtaining approvals etc is tougher for Architects... but ID often make more money. Hope that helps

  • 10) Roofs are for pussies. Enjoy convening with the elements. 9) The kitchen is just fine, Betty Crocker, so back off. 8) Yes, it's on a cliff. Will it stand? Hmm.... 7)What's wrong with 6 stories of 1 room each? 6) Windows are really over-rated. 5) You want to feel cool in the summer, go to the basement. 4) Okay, if you're sure, but if you have a lawn, you have to mow it. 3) Trees? We took all of those out to build the damn thing. 2) Closets? 1) I thoroughly enjoyed working with you.

  • how much does an architect earn anyway .....

  • "im really rich"

yeah, except for those "one-in-a-million"s morons called "star-architects"...gehry, foster, sorry: SIR foster and so on....

  • @JensGibolde He's a lord now... Baron Foster...

  • notice how he said "really rich" so that means hes kind of rich lol

  • why won't architects say "i'm really rich" ? Do they not earn a lot in this profession?

  • God, you're hilarious! i love the little aggravating groans of "i hate my life, but i'll get through this preposterous time."

  • #1 Should have been: "Hey honey, I got spit on by a mule. Here, hold my hand and let us get sweet revenge by molesting your uncle using a broomstick and a popular whiskey"

  • Hilarious!

  • hahahaha

  • @farblonjet I agree. Purely because of their slight difference in focus due to them being involved in different stages of the building life cycle. They will never totally see eye to eye. Makes it a bit of fun.

  • doug = cute

  • Being JUST an architect does suck. However, being an Architect / Contractor (managing your own projects) lets you enjoy a fun, creative, lucrative career. Architects - don't let some yokel contractor screw up your details, take some project management classes, get your contractors license, and start making some real money (and quit bitching)! Design - Build or Die!

  • I wanted to be an architect for a good portion of my life. Then I found out it sucked. Thanks a lot, world. Now I'll probably end up doing something even less reasonable.

  • @jmbmp2 : i totally agree with u! i have studied architecture for 2years and now having a 2 years course in electrical engineering but knowing all those stressful days, sleepless nights, depressing noon when the project didnt go as i wanted im switching back to architecture again! cause i have felt that that's actually my passion..nothing feels better when i accomplish a project n see my own creation! best of luck to u too!

  • One thing u forgot is " You knw What ?? "

  • this shoulda been #1: "Planning & Zoning really knows what they are doing." ... spent most of my life in architectural office... city planning dept always the number 1 thing to complain about. ... eg. our city built a new building to house the planning department & other city functions, only a few years after it's completion, they found they needed to remodel their area, apparently they didnt plan it right the 1st time... that's the planning department for ya!

  • @MsPollywogg omg. this is hysterical! If I get enough I'll add this to the next top 10.

  • @howtoarchitect Thanks... how exciting that my comment has made it to the top!

  • Considering how much architecture school costs, it's a shame only a tiny percentage make decent money or notoriety.

  • Oh, and just for kicks, his website's name is arkinamix dot c o m for those of you who are curious.:) (sorry i had to write it like that. for some reason, im not allowed to post it in html format.)

  • Oh, and just for kicks, this is his website

  • A lot of this isn't true. My dad is one of the leading designers of modern architecture in Cebu and he loves his job, has tonnes of free time AND makes a lot of money doing it. and he's only 48. Don't get discouraged people! If architecture is your love then don't let anything stop you! thumbs up if you agree with me!

  • @jonmedalla just like in any business... you can work it any way you want ... some are more efficient than others ... good point

  • I use to hear it all the time on Tv and not only from architects but from cooks, farmes, workers, etc... thats why i got rid if it. Thums up uf you miss 20th century documentaries.

  • sound pretty much like 10 things you'll never hear an animator say.

just change general contractor with producer , and change build to draw in the "we can't build that it going to be way to extensible", and house to movie in "getting this house built was really easy". other then that it's pretty much the same.

  • i would really love to be an architect...OR a programmer, an engineer, or ANYTHING THAT INVOLVES TECHNOLOGY, SCIENCE, MATH, ETC. but i would rather just get a MBA and just start a company that does any of these things, and have someone do all the hard work for me. then i will be around the thing i love, and make more money, and be in control of what happens in my career. its much easier for someone to own a company that does something you love then do the work you love for a company

  • @dirty1smelly1turban Who said architecture involved any of those things you pointed out? Architecture isn't science math or technology.! Besides it isn't hard being an architect if you really love being an architect.

  • @RadoAller firstly: i DIDN'T say it involved science math or technology. I SAID THAT THOSE ARE OTHER THINGS I ENJOY. secondly: ARCHITECTURE DOES involve science and math, DEFINITELY, IF you don't think so, google "architectural science" or ask someone about a little thing called "physics". AGAIN, I DIDN'T SAY it was hard to be an architect. i SAID its EASIER to start a company as a businessperson in that industry, and build on from that. READ CAREFULLY NEXT TIME!

  • Great spirit, love the choice lololol from the list.

    Respect

  • being an architect it's a perma PITA.

  • I love that half the comments are from people just studying architecture pretending they totally empathise with this video already or know why it'll be different for them. almost as funny as the video itself. good work!

  • Things you'll never hear an architects wife say: "You're home early."

  • @GodsGayLover so true! I'm gonna do another top ten list. great idea!!

  • @GodsGayLover im still a student and yet i hardly hear that from my dad already.

  • I've heard Zaha Hadid talk about how painful the work of an architect can be, but it's a labour of love. It's not a career you can fall into. Hey I'm getting to bed before midnight....the first time this semester!

    another sleepless architecture student.

  • you just made my day! (actually it's night allready=/)

    thx =)

    a sleepless architecture student

  • FML

  • *SARCASM*

  • hahahaha,.. that was so funny... hahaha and more the point 6.. :)

just lovet it it was reali funny

  • If you don't mind me asking: How much do you get paid?

  • @zachboyle54 I do. watch the 'path of an architect' series.

  • @zachboyle54 Watch the third part for salary. ( 35-58k $ 52-65k $ 62-80$ depending on how experienced you are.)

But salary is not the most important thing for an architect, is it.

  • "I'm getting too much sleep"

OMG so true even when I'm still just an architecture student

  • Funny because it is so true. Hope you don't mind that we put an embed of this video on our site for our members. You can view it at OutsourceArchitecture [dot] org

  • Lol, love that you're able to keep your sence of humour :)

  • really...what issues do you have? get real!

  • good one

  • Can I say (as a future architect) that I suck at Maths? xD

  • get a life dude!!!

  • love your videos lol

  • Settle down bro this isn't halo!

  • @muaythaifighterau ha ha "i am actually a humble person". enough said. sorry to set you off bud, go play call of duty im sure it will help!

  • @muaythaifighterau that must have also been where you got such a humble attitude and learned not to take yourself so seriously!

  • Hey Doug, I've seen your videos and if i didn't know you were an architect I'd say you'd never be one. Please answer me, why are you still an architect?

  • Architect is not a verb.

  • @carlsetzer I would argue that it is!!!

  • How much do a architect earn (ca) in ... hmmm... a month `? =D

// The future arcitect, 13/14 years

  • Comment removed

  • i like how seriously people are taking this video. sit back and relax, take some time to poke fun at yourself.

  • i like what this guy have said... because we need to be humble... we need to struggle to be professional, we need to discover something everytime,, as a student im really inspired of this,, and above all we need to have faith in God to achieve something because God is the one who gives us oppurtunities,, ill work hard to be an architect, because im inspired to the greatest architect of our world of universe and everyliving creature and thing, our one and only Lord architect Lord Jesus

  • i like what this guy have said... because we need to be humble... we need to struggle to be professional, we need to discover something everytime,, as a student im really inspired of this,, and above all we need to have faith in God to achieve something b ecuse God is the one who gives us oppurtunities,, ill work hard to be an architect, because im inspired to the greatest architect of our world of universe and everyliving creature and thing, are our one andonly Lord architect Lord Jesus

  • Otkidao ga je XD

  • that waS AMAZING!!

  • that wa AMAZING!!

  • I don't care what this guy says. I've been an architect for over 20 years now. I absolutly love my job. Sometimes it can be a little time consuming, but hey! I love it.

My husband is a doctor so it can be quite stressful and we may not see eachother for ages, but after a job I have loads of time with him.

  • @alyspugh this guy?

  • @alyspugh Are you also *really rich*?

  • @alyspugh I would like to be an architect ;) is it hard to get a job like that ? ( I'm 11 )

  • @alyspugh I think "this guy" is really fun, funny and interesting! I don't think what he is saying means that he doesn't love what he is doing. Being able to make fun of yourself is an admirable quality. :) Plus he can ride a unicycle....hello!!

  • @alyspugh hey i bet you would say the that if your husband is an architect as well.

  • @alyspugh Wow. Memo for you: Learn to understand humour.

  • good video

  • Nice

  • Regarding #4 - I'm an architect and I love my job. So there.

  • @poop78412 Yes but he said I LOVE my job EVERYDAY, I am sure you do not love your job every single day! if you do DAYUM! you are a lucky mang mang! haha

  • Haha! Scarily true, but that doesn't change things for me. I'm still gonna be an architect hopefully. As a student I'm already broke and sleep deprived, lol.

  • My mom would love number 1

  • =] If everyhing goes to plan for me and I become an architect when I finish school and college and what not; then I think I may have to find a way to get one of those sentences in there. lol

  • Oooh Oooh I have one: "Oh sorry guys that actually build things, my plans are nearly impossible to implement"

  • Architects have a hard life , BUT ITS FUN IN THE END BABY <3

  • or "that first drawing plan/concept is perfect, just build it, we're on holiday for a year and looking forward to seeing it when we come back!"

  • what is success? if your goal in life is to be rich, then maybe you should reconsider why we humans exist. I'm a second year student. Its the hardest thing I've ever done. Ups and downs, with unbelievable pressure to spend stupid amounts of time in studio. I'm not good at math, I hate not sleeping. But I'm learning a lot-thats all that matters. The career is well rounded. I pursue it because I feel great when I do my best. Do your best and you will be successful.

  • @jmbmp2 Hey just waited to say i am no my last week of my first year studying Architecture and i completely agree with you :) I love it but it really is the most stressful and hardest thing i have done. I know year 2 will be harder :)

  • @jmbmp2 But i cant, Jesus, when i am asleep i see heavens!

  • @jmbmp2 I wanna be rich. That's why I exist.

  • Comment removed

  • @jmbmp2 Well said mate. Im half way through 3rd year, and 2nd year was probably the most challenging to date. The bar is raised so much higher in 3rd year, so 2nd year is really where you learn your craft and all the skills you learn in 1st year get used together and polished. You slowly get used to the lack of sleep, you eventually learn to do things quicker; but you'' never be satisfied. No matter how well you design something, you'll always wonder how u can do it better.

  • that's one psychotic laugh u got there! lol exactly how I sound like when I'm working on my computer & the program crashes all of a sudden!

  • what?! they don't get paid much? i am SO confused. I have never heard of it being a low paid job. ermm ... why?

i would appreciate some help in making sense of this.

  • @CatAllStars some of theme won amazing amounts of money like Norman Foster with the HSBC building ( he won 17.9% of 230´700,000 USD), but that happens every century =P

  • @GIMGIMG ah well then. lets hope it happens more than every century-infact i will make sure that it happens more often :L

  • @CatAllStars It's low pay for many because clients are hard to get, there's so many established architects. If you think you are talented and willing to work really hard go for it.

  • @MrROTD thank you, I work extremely hard and am never statisfied, not even at the point where i am finished, to define is to limit so really there is no finish. With the right kind of education i could become talented in this profession, i mean i am only 4th year at highschool but i am reading books by stephen hawkings and getting top marks - 9 subjects all 1's. Physics and Art are my joys in life and i think architecture combines both beautifully-what relation do you have to architecture?

  • i think, you're my favorite architect in theese days! :D so ironical.

    yours faithfuly,

    architect student from Lithuania

  • OMG! You are soooo the best!!!

  • basically architects hate their job, hates the people they work with, is sleep deprived and get paid peanuts...Yay...i'm so motivated

  • @GamesAreAwesome Of course your not motivated... your a gamer!

  • Nice opening:) Haha:) Can you make a movie where you design or architect a nice "modern house"? Pleace! It would have been so cool! Like a modern house... you know.... modern;) Pleace

  • if you are an architect with two babies crying a lot in very night and day.....stop dreaming sleep alot.....))))being rich with designing while thinking tehe whole world economic conditions...ıt is a dream too....but thanks god for everything that I AM ALIVE AND BREATHİNG......
