  • these are the actual lyrics- listen to the song and read the lyrics.

  • @ceremony1372 u may have gotten a few mixed up but i think u also corrected some that were mixed up on websites...thnx

  • This is why the dead unnerve me

Oh, to state the same old story

This is why the wheels are turning

Turn away and turn them towards this time

All she asks the strength to hold me

Then again, we would leave her

Traveled fast, but now I'm stopping

Think again and turn them toward this time

  • I'll break them all, no mercy shown

Heaven knows, it's got to get better

Watching her, these things she said

The times she cried, too frail to wake this time

  • I'll break them all, no mercy shown

Heaven knows, it's got to be better

    Avenues, all lined with trees

Picture me, and then you start watching

    Watching forever...

    Watching forever...

  • Do it again, let it be so

Now come with me, let it be so

Let it be so, always be so...

  • New order exemplified the 80's, Joy Division was the transition in the late 70's from Punk to what became Post-punk, then New Wave. Was a good time for music. English bands from that era on through to the late 80's and 90's provided a much needed soundtrack to many people's lives, and still do. Shows how relevant the music was to still find new fans after 30 years.

    Joy Division = 1976 - 1980

    New Order = 1980 - Present

  • I know about all the bad recordings BUT this is a GOOD BAD RECORDING

  • 26 years being a fan and this song can still make the hairs on my arm stand up. Great stuff. Glad to hear that not every kid in America hasn't heard of Joy Division....

  • This song just is ' Amazing ' Honestly has to be the best song ever made in the world, I'm 12 and people ask me what kind of music I listen to, I say 80's mostly joy division, most of then hardly know who joy division are! God hahaha.

  • @TheKathleenR

I agree with u, this band is, in my opinion, the best band of the 80's. They made history. I am thirteen, I am glad some of our generation is reaching back into the past and embracing that era's music. It is much better than this one's.

When people ask me what kind of music I listen to, they get this puzzled look on their face. Its funny, and my brother thinks I am insane for liking this genre. He likes rap.

  • @Miel01Henderson Yeh. I love Joy Division <3 . 80's :)

  • @TheKathleenR good for you! if they don't know then you know they're nobody you need to know but if you can convert them into new fans don't hesitate!

  • Stephen Morris never missed a beat in a live performance. Did anyone notice that? Surely one of the best drummers of all time.

  • @GamesFrontiers I think the drumming on 'Passover' at Birmingham Uni (on Still) goes a bit wrong for a second, mid-way through. But apart from that I can't think of any other slip-ups.

  • After Ian killed himself I listened to the New Order version until the record needle was worn out and the vinyl was almost destroyed. Over and over again. This was the ultimate Joy Division single, only released by New Order.

  • I love the comment from GumBeatingTV said it how it is! Joy Division through and through <3

  • i like new order better, but a shame how they had to start

  • This is possibly, the most beautifull song ever written. Like others have said, if only we had a better quality version of Ian singing it.

  • Joy Division work for a number of reasons, in no particular order, great sound (thank you Martin, RIP), simple song structures that don't follow the predictable verse, chorus etc, sincere, heartfelt lyrics, great basslines (I have to say that, I'm a bassist) amongst others. Would they have still been as good if Ian was still with us? Who knows. but the legacy lives on. most of all, Ian RIP mate.

  • simply the best song of joy division (;

  • When I was 14 I discovered Joy Division in 2006. I hated this kind of music at the time, but I was captivated by them. I ended up becoming a huge fan. It introduced me to better music instead of what I was watching on MTV. Joy Division left me paralyzed and looking at life a new way in 8th grade. I wouldn't have grown up to be the person I am if I have never discovered them.

  • @BoneMachine0 Good for you. As someone from the 80s generation, I'm glad to hear that. There was a lot of great music from that era that got eclipsed by the Michael Jacksonoid music. Many great bands like this and PiL, The Jam, The Undertones. MTV was sort of the beginning of the strongest corporate domination of music in this country.

  • A god sent me hear to listen to this......that is all I know and I am here and that is all that is important.

  • Ian.. my love. I miss you so much

  • love this song

  • much better than new order, needless to say

  • A crime really, they didn't release a clearer version of Ceremony.

  • @FabyoMty New Order did, Joy Division couldn't make one in time, remember that their last show with Ian was the first and last time they did Ceremony live.

  • Every time I listen to this song, it feels like Ian is not just singing a song, but singing a requiem for himself.

  • Ian Curtis and Syd Barrett are two people I would love to have spent some time with, some people come along in life who are ahead of their time and their lyrics or influence on others are not fully appreciated until they are gone. R.I.P Ian and R.I.P Syd

  • This is why they all unnerve me

    Everyday, the same old story

Notice why the wheels are turning

Turn away, and turn over this time

This is what I feel he is singing in this one. Before New Order changed the lyrics up a bit.

  • @slangshotstudios good job sounds right

  • i was privileged to be at the only gig they did in scotland.

  • @orangeblackman lucky man you are

  • and yet even he couldnt walk away in silence- here we are 30yrs later still talking about him and them and new order and how both bands still remain an very early port of call for all music fans finding their way towards good music- however they choose to define that word. look at the bands that covered them both- radiohead, galaxie 500, crowded house..the list is endless. the triffids fall into the same category.

  • cambio la cabeza esta música, te caga a patadas en la cabeza, joy la mejor banda de la historia

  • Thanks Joy, for changin' my life, really thanks =D

  • @SuperWood210 i agree

  • @SuperWood210 There wasn't a case to begin with... ;-) PEACE!!!

  • watching forever.....

  • sounds like Ian is singing from heaven...

  • the band ceremony brought me here. i see why they named their band after this song

  • just imagine how amazing the new album would have been listening to this. Fuck.

  • Ian is a fucking genius!

  • @chazzaa100

i don't think so, he commited suicide, i admire his lyrics hismusic his passion, but he made the wrong choice..

he was the one who singing don't walk away... in silence....

  • I intend getting my vinyl single out tomorrow and blasting it

  • I can't understand a fucking word, yet my soul just connects with every second of this song.

  • Ian Curtis's voice is very heartful. Though The song is the one which is hard to listen

  • Sencillo, elegante, con impacto. Excelentes voz y bateria. Larga vidaaaa a Ian

  • doesn't ian curtis have a kid?what happened?

    good song!

  • @Perromojadop Yes he does. Her name is Natalie Curtis. She is a photographer. She's on Twitter at @16apr79 (that's her birthdate).

  • doesnt ian curtis have a kid? what happened?

    good song!

  • nothing will ever touch this song or band.

  • Damn, i was a crazy 12 year old when this came out and Ian's voice just tamed my ass. RIP Ian, i miss you so :(

  • joy division weren't quite as epic as smashmouth

  • @wangobangodango .hahahahahaha. you sir have won comment of the day.

  • @wangobangodango so true.

  • I can remember being a kid in the fall of 1979 and getting the "Unknown Pleasures" record and everything changed for me that afternoon in my room I discovered a whole new world R.I.P. Ian

  • awesome song. brings tears to my eyes, r.i.p ian curtis.

  • what if Ian Curtis is alive?what now?

  • i like Joy Division its very emotional of their songs.

  • One of my favorite JD songs!! R.I.P. Ian!!

  • I've been searching from what album is this version of ceremony and I only found the "still" version !!

Please tell me if you know the album of this version cause i wanna buy it.

  • joy division is just one of those bands that has true fans.

ive never met ANYONE who said they liked joy division thats only

listened to love will tear us apart.

Joy Division is a real band, with real, dedicated fans.

    R.I.P Ian.

  • WAY ahead of their time... supersimple..supergenius

  • @6tramp6 - I couldn't have said it better myself. PERFECT!

  • @6tramp6 . But were they really? that era {late 70`s - 80s} was THE era for true music, stone roses, Joy Division, The cure plus the bands that just come before them - the who, Pink floyd, and then there was the pop music that was actually amazing MJ for example, plus only a couple of years later REAL hip hop cam on the scene. I reckon they are from the time they could only have come from {if that makes sense}.

  • of what time?

  • Sometimes I really think that this is the best song ever.

  • joy division is that mad feeling we all can't explain.

  • Just watched Ian Curtis biography on netflix. Sorry forget the name. Odd band name for such downer music. I find I like it though. I did`nt even give this a band a listen when they were happening. I judged this band by there name alone. Very wrong every time. I thought Jackson 5, Osmonds, ect. pop. I was in high school listening to what is now "classic rock". I know just say old - lol Joy Division. Give them a listen. There`s a lot of bands with elements of thier sound.
  • @dcxdj the bands name is actually a reference to the "joy division" in WW2, it was the division of the most attractive jewish girls in the concentration camps and they were used as sex slaves for the nazis

so yeah, its kinda depressing when you look at it that way

  • @frozenbloodbullets However, you could look at it like they were trying to pick a band name that would sound up beat. IDK, sounds likely to me.

  • My appreciation for this band seems to grow every year. JD are like fine wine that just gets better with age.

  • sounds like Ian's voice is coming from another dimension, like he's singing from heaven or something.

  • The older I get the more I believe Joy Division were perfect.

  • brings back great memories :)

  • Good song, but it's sad that the vocals aren't that good. This song would be much better if the vocals could be improved upon.

  • no you sad sap

  • watching forever......RIP Ian...love your music so much!

  • I wish the audio was better. Curtis sounds like one of the adults from the Peanuts cartoons.

  • joy division goes deeo inside, where we all hide our loneliness

  • FAC 33 ?

  • o/ Sir

  • Golliwogg APPROVES of this song.

  • I can't hear you, Ian... I can't hear you...

  • I like the distortion on this track and how Ian's voice seems to be coming from the distance the voice obscured in someway

  • it kills me to hear his voice in this song

  • How can anything compare to joy division? nothing can compare to it, they just had it like nobody else, i didnt like joy division one bit when i was younger, i've listened to them for 4 years now and i'm 23 and i always come back to them and remember how no other band can make such an impact on me

  • 23 need their ears cleaning out

  • Does anyone else cry while listening to Joy Division?

  • @omfgitsjosie

    I do.

  • @omfgitsjosie Yeah: Pussies.

  • @omfgitsjosie yeah i cry. especially knowing they're not around anymore and we're stuck with jonas brothers and other shitheads with reality shows.

  • @bababooey7576 If you choose to only listen to mainstream music, you can do that. There are so many talented musicians out there now, but people would rather bitch about Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga then take time and listen to the underground music.

  • @keepcalmandswag0n oh yes there is a lot of good stuff out there as ive discovered. just commenting on the general pop crap.

  • every fucking time.

ian is like my lost self.

the darker more honoust, braver part of me who departed this realm.

i miss him, his intensity, his rawness.

    living life on the edge

  • @omfgitsjosie - oh yes, doing it now...

  • @omfgitsjosie It's tough not to. I just have to think about the art that Ian left for us to appreciate and not think about his suffering.

  • @omfgitsjosie

Only when there's a stupid advert ruining it before it starts!!

  • @omfgitsjosie Me. Right now

  • @omfgitsjosie we all do or we wouldn't be coming back to this...

  • @omfgitsjosie All the time... All the damn time.

  • Respond to this video... yes

  • cant hear any of the lyrics

  • Very good, far warmer than their famous recordings...Ian, too bad there were no anti-depressants in those days.

  • @Mazurka1001

Actually there were, only they were much less known-as depression itself.

  • @Mazurka1001 Yeah, there were. That's how Nick Drake died.

  • 23 people.. just.. what the fuck

  • postpunk not dead

  • thank you for the upload

  • Good song

  • GRANDE IAN PUTA MADRE TE NOS FUISTE MUY TEMPRANO PERO IGUAL TE AÑORAMOS GRANDE JOY DEVICION

  • ty for loading the version with Ian singing...more ppl need to know that it was not a new order song...sadly alot of ppl dont even know new order was originally joy division...unbelievable

  • i dont know about the opinion of the others but joy division is a very emotional band-thing which is good

  • if you dislike this, you don't know music.......

  • everytime i listen to this band i feel good and think that nothing can go wrong in life

    R.I.P Ian Curtis

  • There's something about this song I dont know what it is but it makes me wanna go out and run until my legs burn.

  • This is the crossover point between JD and NO, and shows clearly that had Curtis not died the band would have ended up sounding much like NO anyway.

  • @ProjectFlashlight612

Actually you are close this is the seminal moment between post punk and new wave. THis song right here

  • Even though you can hardly understand what is being said and the New Order version is so much clearer, this version has so much more charm. Something in Ian's voice in this is just stuns me.

  • My favourite song all through the early/mid 80s. Still so uplifting, especially for a Joy Division song. Somehow the day just seems brighter when this song is played.

  • wow...just wow... no drum machine can touch Stephen Morris...

  • i started to tear up when i saw Ian's dancing picture at 0:54

  • 22 people probably prefer the Still version

  • @derrderr420 still version?

  • @elvensbane the version on the album Still

  • One word. - Immense.

  • Twenty-two people wouldn't know a decent tune if it came hurling through the airwaves, toppling entire city blocks, concentrating itself into the finest sonic spear, and shot through both eardrums, and followed suite for the remaining twenty-one...No, they're content to enjoy the derivative crap they think makes their tastes stand out. Shame on anyone who refuses to give this band their universally sanctioned dues.

  • still incredibly poignant after all these years.... throws me into a state of catharsis every time...

    cheers for posting.

  • Peter Hook is the man! Aloha!

  • 22 people like rap music

  • Im actually a rapper. And I love this Band!

  • Now 22 people have magically transformed into idiots!

  • Oh I'll break them down, no mercy shown. Heavan knows its got to be this time. :)

  • Somebody commented that they liked the lyrics here better than on the New Order version: What exactly are the lyrics here? If I recall, didn't Bernard try to use some sort of graphic equalizer to transcribe Ian's lyrics from the three different Joy Division recordings of the song? Point being, how can you like these lyrics better when you can only partially hear them? And how could possibly fault Bernard for not being able to fully transcribe?

Still, the band sounds GREAT playing this tune.

  • @floundermsu I actually decyphered parts of the song. They may sound the same, but who knows if they are.

  • when i search joy division, why is this song on the fucking 4th page?

  • godamn sound mixer

  • absolutely fantastic

  • call me what you want but everything that has happened in this bands history, is exactly right. The legacy and status this band has is exactly the one it deserves and should have.

  • Bein A Middle Aged Man far Younger than My Yrs n Sufferin from Grandmal Epilepsy, i Can "MASSIVELY" Relate to Ian . .

Epilepsy is a frightenin illness, jus take it from Me Guys . . :(

Luv this Dude thou . .

Wot a total inspiration He His . . Godbless You Ian Curtis n May You RIP . . Your Memory Lives On!!!!! :P)

  • HOOKY YER THE MAN GOD BLESS .

  • It'd be good if the New Order version had, had these lyrics. I'd like to hear Transmission cover this with the original lyrics they're pretty good.

  • @zian1977c WHY IS UR CHANNEL DELETED?

  • everytime i hear this song it makes me cry but afterward it shows me how much i love this genious track..

  • "Ian Curtis or how to be a legend in 3 years "........................30 plus years now we still listening this famous and beautiful tunes !!!!!!!!!!!1

  • Brilliant song! One of my all time favorite.

  • 22 people are absolute idiots

  • Joy Division spoke the truth. Ian spoke from the soul and "Ceremony" may be the statement that resonates the strongest, and the longest. Is there, then, anything more nausea-inducing than the ubiquitous Bono together with the bombastic Arcade Fire serving up their unique 'treatment" of this song?? Kind of like taking a Beethoven symphony and playing it on kazoos at Walmart for adoring noon hour shoppers.

  • @hugosalarm oh grow up

  • @gorgolyt You could at least extend the courtesy of allowing me to determine whether I can tell YOU to grow up by expanding your response beyond "oh grow up" Your one syllable word cluster suggests that you are economical, favor the unsubstantiated rebuke, have a sense of humor, and find spirituality through simple expression, all qualities that may or may not be indicative of maturity.

  • @hugosalarm succinctly? ecumenism.

  • @gorgolyt Clearly expressed. Yes. Some sort of comprehensive social unity guided by prayer. Got it. (Rumination) My instincts are trying to tell me you're mature, so how come you sound like a born again long distance trucker whose CB communication keeps breaking up??

  • @hugosalarm "Is there, then, anything more nausea-inducing than the ubiquitous Bono together with the bombastic Arcade Fire serving up their unique 'treatment" of this song?? Kind of like taking a Beethoven symphony and playing it on kazoos at Walmart for adoring noon hour shoppers."

    > ecumenism

  • @gorgolyt You know, and correct me if I'm wrong, I think you've just helped me begin to rid myself of this need I seem to have for infantile verbal posturing on occasion. I believe you're right. "Ecumenism" was the missing piece, my key to a brighter, more socially harmonious, less acrimonious future. I am ready to grow up now. Thank you, god-sent stranger.
