New order exemplified the 80's, Joy Division was the transition in the late 70's from Punk to what became Post-punk, then New Wave. Was a good time for music. English bands from that era on through to the late 80's and 90's provided a much needed soundtrack to many people's lives, and still do. Shows how relevant the music was to still find new fans after 30 years.
I read a great anecdote about this you may have heard it before, but if you havnt it went when Ian died, the band decided they wanted to record this properly, both in Ian’s memory & because it was great song they were proud of. The problem was, they didn’t have the lyrics. Bernard had to sit listening to a recording of live version over and over again to try and decipher Ian’s lyrics. What exists today is (well, apart from the odd word which might be wrong) is Ian Curtis’s last masterpiece!
26 years being a fan and this song can still make the hairs on my arm stand up. Great stuff. Glad to hear that not every kid in America hasn't heard of Joy Division....
This song just is ' Amazing ' Honestly has to be the best song ever made in the world, I'm 12 and people ask me what kind of music I listen to, I say 80's mostly joy division, most of then hardly know who joy division are! God hahaha.
I agree with u, this band is, in my opinion, the best band of the 80's. They made history. I am thirteen, I am glad some of our generation is reaching back into the past and embracing that era's music. It is much better than this one's.
When people ask me what kind of music I listen to, they get this puzzled look on their face. Its funny, and my brother thinks I am insane for liking this genre. He likes rap.
@TheKathleenR good for you! if they don't know then you know they're nobody you need to know but if you can convert them into new fans don't hesitate!
@GamesFrontiers I think the drumming on 'Passover' at Birmingham Uni (on Still) goes a bit wrong for a second, mid-way through. But apart from that I can't think of any other slip-ups.
After Ian killed himself I listened to the New Order version until the record needle was worn out and the vinyl was almost destroyed. Over and over again. This was the ultimate Joy Division single, only released by New Order.
Joy Division work for a number of reasons, in no particular order, great sound (thank you Martin, RIP), simple song structures that don't follow the predictable verse, chorus etc, sincere, heartfelt lyrics, great basslines (I have to say that, I'm a bassist) amongst others. Would they have still been as good if Ian was still with us? Who knows. but the legacy lives on. most of all, Ian RIP mate.
When I was 14 I discovered Joy Division in 2006. I hated this kind of music at the time, but I was captivated by them. I ended up becoming a huge fan. It introduced me to better music instead of what I was watching on MTV. Joy Division left me paralyzed and looking at life a new way in 8th grade. I wouldn't have grown up to be the person I am if I have never discovered them.
@BoneMachine0 Good for you. As someone from the 80s generation, I'm glad to hear that. There was a lot of great music from that era that got eclipsed by the Michael Jacksonoid music. Many great bands like this and PiL, The Jam, The Undertones. MTV was sort of the beginning of the strongest corporate domination of music in this country.
I think it's sad,sad that so good songs can't be created anymore, those kind of songs that when you listen to them, you get so related.moreover if you know their story, how they were written..Also the movie control was truly amazing.Ian Curtis was a genius,he would still be..it's funny how after so many years people feel so intimate.I just love it.I wish I could see them live,Truly magnificent.
@FabyoMty New Order did, Joy Division couldn't make one in time, remember that their last show with Ian was the first and last time they did Ceremony live.
Ian Curtis and Syd Barrett are two people I would love to have spent some time with, some people come along in life who are ahead of their time and their lyrics or influence on others are not fully appreciated until they are gone. R.I.P Ian and R.I.P Syd
and yet even he couldnt walk away in silence- here we are 30yrs later still talking about him and them and new order and how both bands still remain an very early port of call for all music fans finding their way towards good music- however they choose to define that word. look at the bands that covered them both- radiohead, galaxie 500, crowded house..the list is endless. the triffids fall into the same category.
I can remember being a kid in the fall of 1979 and getting the "Unknown Pleasures" record and everything changed for me that afternoon in my room I discovered a whole new world R.I.P. Ian
@6tramp6 . But were they really? that era {late 70`s - 80s} was THE era for true music, stone roses, Joy Division, The cure plus the bands that just come before them - the who, Pink floyd, and then there was the pop music that was actually amazing MJ for example, plus only a couple of years later REAL hip hop cam on the scene. I reckon they are from the time they could only have come from {if that makes sense}.
Just watched Ian Curtis biography on netflix. Sorry forget the name. Odd band name for such downer music. I find I like it though. I did`nt even give this a band a listen when they were happening. I judged this band by there name alone. Very wrong every time. I thought Jackson 5, Osmonds, ect. pop. I was in high school listening to what is now "classic rock". I know just say old - lol Joy Division. Give them a listen. There`s a lot of bands with elements of thier sound.
@dcxdj the bands name is actually a reference to the "joy division" in WW2, it was the division of the most attractive jewish girls in the concentration camps and they were used as sex slaves for the nazis
so yeah, its kinda depressing when you look at it that way
How can anything compare to joy division? nothing can compare to it, they just had it like nobody else, i didnt like joy division one bit when i was younger, i've listened to them for 4 years now and i'm 23 and i always come back to them and remember how no other band can make such an impact on me
@bababooey7576 If you choose to only listen to mainstream music, you can do that. There are so many talented musicians out there now, but people would rather bitch about Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga then take time and listen to the underground music.
ty for loading the version with Ian singing...more ppl need to know that it was not a new order song...sadly alot of ppl dont even know new order was originally joy division...unbelievable
Even though you can hardly understand what is being said and the New Order version is so much clearer, this version has so much more charm. Something in Ian's voice in this is just stuns me.
My favourite song all through the early/mid 80s. Still so uplifting, especially for a Joy Division song. Somehow the day just seems brighter when this song is played.
Twenty-two people wouldn't know a decent tune if it came hurling through the airwaves, toppling entire city blocks, concentrating itself into the finest sonic spear, and shot through both eardrums, and followed suite for the remaining twenty-one...No, they're content to enjoy the derivative crap they think makes their tastes stand out. Shame on anyone who refuses to give this band their universally sanctioned dues.
Somebody commented that they liked the lyrics here better than on the New Order version: What exactly are the lyrics here? If I recall, didn't Bernard try to use some sort of graphic equalizer to transcribe Ian's lyrics from the three different Joy Division recordings of the song? Point being, how can you like these lyrics better when you can only partially hear them? And how could possibly fault Bernard for not being able to fully transcribe?
call me what you want but everything that has happened in this bands history, is exactly right. The legacy and status this band has is exactly the one it deserves and should have.
"Ian Curtis or how to be a legend in 3 years "........................30 plus years now we still listening this famous and beautiful tunes !!!!!!!!!!!1
Joy Division spoke the truth. Ian spoke from the soul and "Ceremony" may be the statement that resonates the strongest, and the longest. Is there, then, anything more nausea-inducing than the ubiquitous Bono together with the bombastic Arcade Fire serving up their unique 'treatment" of this song?? Kind of like taking a Beethoven symphony and playing it on kazoos at Walmart for adoring noon hour shoppers.
@gorgolyt You could at least extend the courtesy of allowing me to determine whether I can tell YOU to grow up by expanding your response beyond "oh grow up" Your one syllable word cluster suggests that you are economical, favor the unsubstantiated rebuke, have a sense of humor, and find spirituality through simple expression, all qualities that may or may not be indicative of maturity.
@gorgolyt Clearly expressed. Yes. Some sort of comprehensive social unity guided by prayer. Got it. (Rumination) My instincts are trying to tell me you're mature, so how come you sound like a born again long distance trucker whose CB communication keeps breaking up??
@hugosalarm "Is there, then, anything more nausea-inducing than the ubiquitous Bono together with the bombastic Arcade Fire serving up their unique 'treatment" of this song?? Kind of like taking a Beethoven symphony and playing it on kazoos at Walmart for adoring noon hour shoppers."
@gorgolyt You know, and correct me if I'm wrong, I think you've just helped me begin to rid myself of this need I seem to have for infantile verbal posturing on occasion. I believe you're right. "Ecumenism" was the missing piece, my key to a brighter, more socially harmonious, less acrimonious future. I am ready to grow up now. Thank you, god-sent stranger.
these are the actual lyrics- listen to the song and read the lyrics.

This is why the dead unnerve me
Oh, to state the same old story
This is why the wheels are turning
Turn away and turn them towards this time
All she asks the strength to hold me
Then again, we would leave her
Traveled fast, but now I'm stopping
Think again and turn them toward this time

Shame on anyone who refuses to give this band their universally sanctioned dues.

Somebody commented that they liked the lyrics here better than on the New Order version: What exactly are the lyrics here? If I recall, didn't Bernard try to use some sort of graphic equalizer to transcribe Ian's lyrics from the three different Joy Division recordings of the song? Point being, how can you like these lyrics better when you can only partially hear them? And how could possibly fault Bernard for not being able to fully transcribe?
Still, the band sounds GREAT playing this tune.

@floundermsu I actually decyphered parts of the song. They may sound the same, but who knows if they are.

It'd be good if the New Order version had, had these lyrics. I'd like to hear Transmission cover this with the original lyrics they're pretty good.

@hugosalarm oh grow up

@hugosalarm succinctly? ecumenism.
gorgolyt 6 months ago
@gorgolyt Clearly expressed. Yes. Some sort of comprehensive social unity guided by prayer. Got it. (Rumination) My instincts are trying to tell me you're mature, so how come you sound like a born again long distance trucker whose CB communication keeps breaking up??

@gorgolyt You know, and correct me if I'm wrong, I think you've just helped me begin to rid myself of this need I seem to have for infantile verbal posturing on occasion. I believe you're right. "Ecumenism" was the missing piece, my key to a brighter, more socially harmonious, less acrimonious future. I am ready to grow up now. Thank you, god-sent stranger.
