Yeah, everyone wants to be a critic. The reality is that most critics are like tics on the creative body - they're a kind of parasite. There are a few, like Mick LaSalle from the S.F. Oh, so we're lazy, superficial & parasites? Kind of like trolling on a keyboard, as you seem to have done here. I now know me, myself & I singularly didn't like The Wrestler obviously means I didn't understand it or 'get' what he was going for, because I'm merely a stupid parasite. Thanks for clearing that up, douche!
Why would they have had a huge Wrestlemania-like venue, for his "big comeback"?
It obviously wasn't supposed to be anything more than a higher profile indie event billing it as a comeback, that "hopefully" would have scouts from a "real" show in attendance.
Bigger shows always scout smaller venues for talent to swipe, or to pick back up for "one more run."
They didn't have the budget for it, but it would have made zero sense anyway.
in the intro to Malcolm in the Middle, the wrestler Bret Hart has in the sharpshooter is Chris Benoit, I think it was an episode of Nitro, or maybe thunder
On a side note of wretling in Televison/Movies In the begining of some of tjhe older episodes of Malcom in the middle you can see Bret Hart putting somebody in a sharpshooter in WCW and i REALLY want to see this movie but it's not around me
Great discussion guys and if you are ever on Lance Storms website he discusses the movie too. I agree the movie was good but not as great as it was hyped to being. If it was say some actor no one knew of playing Randy The Ram I seriously doubt it would get recognition and yeah WWE would shit all over it I got no doubt.
i've given it some thought and i strongly disagree with eric about this movie. Fact is the movie had no moral or point to it whatsoever it was simply a realistic potrayal of what happens to alot of wrestlers.
It's really no one's fault but Mickey Rourke's for losing. He burned a lot of bridges when he was younger and it may be a flawed system but the people who vote are the same people he pissed off when he was younger. At least he lost to a friend and one of the few people that still believed in him during his lowest points.
Even if someone didnt like this film be glad and happy because as we all know it could have been far far worse. I thought it was ok but would not watch it again. As for a come back sin city?
Sin City wasn't really a come back but more of a return to mainstream films. Mickey Rourke really never went away, he was doing crappy straight-to-video movies for years and had bit parts in a few indie films like Buffalo '66 and The Pledge. He has been in several other well-known movies in the past few years like Once Upon A Time In Mexico and Domino but none of them were starring roles and no one was talking about him after they had seen them.
True Chis mate, but everyone said come back film! He's in lot's of film's some looked up in IMDB, but that phrase come back kinda bothered me. Sin city grossed £158 mill world wide. The wrestler made £18mill so far I'm told you may correct me that's cool. So making £158 to £18 isnt a come back? I disagree but I still love your show and all the work you all do. And people were talking about Domino, just in a really bad way. Damn you Keira Knightley! Look forward to the next show man J
I understand what you're saying and you are right about the money. Sin City was definitely the more popular of the two but he pretty unrecognizable under all that make-up and he was a part of a large ensemble cast. Can we agree on this being his comeback to starring roles?
@helpmedie91111 That's what I love about the Wrestling Roundtable because not everybody naturally will agree on everything all the time as it is,period. One has to be objective!
That's the way it goes. It's always me, story of my life, ha. I feel like I'm the only person who liked The Godfather 3, TMNT 3, X-Men 3, and other movies ending in "3", ha. Oh yeah, Indiana Jones 4, I loved it, why am I the only one? Anyway, I just call it like I see it and I wasn't feeling this movie at all, even though I work in wrestling!
lol, I can relate to that, I'm literally the only person who loves the Star Wars Prequels. But I did grow up with them lol. I didn't mean to call you negative, you're just like me, either 100% For or 100% Against. Atleast I think you are, ha.
Since I am a manager, I am highly anticipating your next video. Anyone that would like to check out some of my work just check out my favorites. Thank you
No, CZW overuses gimmick matches, unlike the old ECW. They depend too much on deathmatches and not enough on technical matches. At least ECW had the occasional Oldf School like technical match in between the hardcore shit and the spotfests. I don't have a problem with CZW's talent, but the booking is bad. Wrestling matches are supposed to tell stories and gimmick matches are supposed to end feuds. When 99 percent of your matches have a gimmick attached, it takes the specialness out of the match
I'm shocked it's still around period, but anyway, absolutely not. Backyard idiots jumping off of Ryder trucks on a farm with trees in the background onto light tubes and cutting arteries isn't mainstream whatsoever, heh
I'm a film student aswell, and I'm confused, your biggest problem with the film was that it was low budget??? Is that right??
I thought it was a great film, one of the best films ever, full stop. You also had a problem with Randy the Ram not being sympathetic enough. Well where does it say that he has to be sympathetic? Most great character studies have people you have empathy for not sympathy.
Well maybe someone should get Ross to let go of his laptop for 5mins and stop blogging jesus Jim I dont care. At the end of the wrestler when he gives that speech I swear he was going to say "And at this sunday at...."
i thought the movie was good, i have no complaints. i think there should of been a lil things that where more funny or unpredictable, besides his finger flying off. ummm it was good in its own perspective, but overall i could only watch that movie once. ur points where good and this movie could have more glamour, it was good movie but it needed more to bring ppl back to loving wrestling, there was no surprises. its was aight but ive seen docs. that are better. peace
first of all this is really good to watch but i have a two question is the wrestler a remake from the movie the wrestler that the awa produce back in the late 1960's or 70's? And which of them is better?
First of all, thank you. As for The Wrestler that AWA produced, starring Ed Asner, no, I don't think it's a "remake" or related at all. I haven't seen it yet, but I actually have an unopened copy sitting in my room forever! I'll have to check it out & see if I like it better. One has cool old school wrestlers, the other has Marisa Tomei's tits. Choices, choices!
@WrestlingRoundtable I have that Wresler on DVD too. That's a good one as well but focused more on Ed Asner's character and his female love interest/counterpart than the actual wrestling business itself, let alone AWA.
Okay, I never watched the wrestler, and by the sound of it, the movie may be in no shape or form the kind of wrestling movie I want people to watch and understand.
HOWEVER I give credit to the fact that making a movie involving wrestling to be bound to win an Oscar is possible! And we see it with "Mickey Rourke IS the Wrestler"
E, to your point on Mr company line fake ol JR, think about this, one of the last times he was caught on tape outside of the WWE uni-tard was when they showed him on the sidelines of Oklahoma vs West Virginia where west va beat their ass. was pretty nice watching the healthy side of his face cry.
Best wrestling movie scene: Ready to rumble, Savage vs jobber with Zappa asa ref in a 7-11 type store. classic. Jr company line backfire-"THE DUDLYS ARE THE BEST TEAM EVER" lol
I have trained for a bit as a wrestler and I hang with wrestlers "the wrestler" and "Blood sweat and tears" are the closest thing to the wrestling life
Idiots, there saying the movie is not about wrestling course not they cant even read the title its about THE wrestler. The film makers are idiots too they all try to agree, whats the point of a round table if they agree. No personality, No information, worst video EVER.
First of all, IDIOT, it's "they're," and if you really can't understand what we meant by it being more a portrayal of a personality IN wrestling than wrestling itself, then maybe you're the fucking idiot. We never TRY to all agree, and we obviously didn't because if you listened - which you didn't, or you're too stupid to understand - right at the beginning, some of us liked it & some of us didn't! No personality or information? How about this : 1. You're an asshole 2. Suck my dick. Fuck off
it just 2 sweeeeeeeeeeeet how u guys now have longer videos. keep up the great work E ! Plus talk more bout 80s-90s wrestling....wrestling today sucks...lol But great topic on the Wrestler movie.
I thought it was really good. they showed alot of what we already know goes on behind the scenes but dont normally get to see. it was unlike other wrestling movies where it was based more in reality. i think there was no msg, he was just a guy that had nothing in his life except the character he portrayed in the ring. if he wasnt randy the ram hed be some homeless guy shooting up in an alley.
If a wrestling movie has to be a bio, who would it be about? If you can only pick one wrestling whose story would be worth making a movie about, who would it be? The more I think about it, the more I think Mick Foley...
this is stupid, and out of the box, but in my opinion, appropriate
William Regal!
Let's face it, he has one of the best in ring skills in the WWE today! He wrestled since he was 15 years old, was put in the worst gimmicks in the WWE, and has NEVER gain a push for a world title!
a movie like that, ending with the wrestler similar to Regal winning a world title, then retire at the end seems good to me. Long though, but good!
He's basically a guy from the British version of American Gladiators, who TNA brought in to be a wrestler. He barely even beat Shark Boy in his debut match, and then dominated Chris Sabin at the Against All Odds PPV. Even Sabin could not make this guy look good. The guy had some previous experience, but has only been wrestling for about 5 months in total, and his finisher is even lamer than the FU, which says a lot.
What would you define as the ideal movie about wrestling? To me, its not much different then the definitive wrestling storyline: take elements of the real, the ordinary, the extraordinary, have a tragic flaw, a comeback (everyone loves a comeback) and a triumphant ending. I don't mean sugar and ice cream Russians cheering Rocky ending...but something that establishes hope. Afterall, Wrestling and Wrestling fans have been through so much (the last 4 years alone) and we still watch and hope!
I think, compared to some fo the nombinations, it should've got a best picture nombinations, but hell, it's the Oscars! They barely know good stuff from bad crap!
Every Mickey Rourke movie of the last 5 years has been the 'Mickey Rourke comeback movie'. I thought Sin City was his comeback?? It's just movie studio advertising nonsense. I though it was an excellent performance, average movie. I wonder how good it would have been had Beyond The Mat never come out? Would it even have been made without Beyond The Mat? I don't think The Wrestler says anything new and it showed nothing that viewers of Beyond The Mat hadn't seen.
It must have been weird seeing Nigel on the screen(Well, his back anyway) & then turning to see him in the seat! I know it was just odd seeing all the usual suspects ringside like at ROH shows(Cary, mustache, etc.) but on the big screen. Was Final Battle good?
so basically you didnt like the movie but you liked mickeys performance? different subject but so you think he should win the oscar? i dont know if you seen any of the other performances or was his that good it doesnt even matter.
I don't know if "liked" is the word, heh, but he definitely did a good & realistic portrayal of a washed-up older wrestler on the indies. About the Oscar, I don't think it's fair to say since I haven't seen the other performances nominated (Sean Penn in Man Milk, I believe Frank Langella for Frosty/Nixon, Brad Pitt for Benji, etc.) but he does have the strong "comeback" angle going for him, so I can see the academy giving it to him for the 'story' & the 'moment,' but he probably deserves it.
As you said, if the Benoit thing doesn't wake them up, what makes us think a movie will. I've given up hope for wrestling ever 'reforming' or getting union or an offseason or anything. Until a HHH drops dead in the ring after snorting coke off of Vince, nothing will change.
As I mentioned on the show, The Wrestler can open up a lot more eyes on how the wrestling industry works for future wrestlers. More so than the Benoit situation because not only was this a visual story but people are so hard headed they didn't wanna believe Benoit was a murderer thus continuing to chant his name at WWE events. Hopefully indy wrestlers now will have another career choice as a back up plan to avoid being like Randy the Ram.
Rod, it's a nice sentiment, & while one would hope for the same effect for wrestlers themselves(Some may feel the way), a lot of wrestlers deny everything to the point of insanity. They'll read Ring Of Hell & deny everything, go in the opposite direction. Guys like Piper or whatever wrestler loved the movie will probably want to BE The Ram - dying in the ring is something they practically romanticize. I guess what wrestlers take from this movie will vary
Exactly. People who are in wrestling, or wrestling fans, think this might start a movement of interest or a boom, but like you said, most media looking at this is talking about Rourke. Very little have any genuine interest in wrestling, and I think that goes for the movie goers too. They don't go, "It's about wrestling, I want to learn more about it" They go, "I heard Mickey Rourke is good in it, it's his comeback!"
You know, by the sound of it, Y2J has all rights to say he doesn't respect Rourke! Sure it was a script, but right about now, I wouldn't blame him if it was for real!!
Boy you guys firmly shot down the movie like it was nothing!
I like that! Gives me confidence that you guys KNOW what you are talking about.
but ...Eric, I never seen the moive, and read some things about it. THIS is not the wrestling movie I expected to be with the falling star. I wanted to do a wrestling film myself, with arealistic storyline. And I guess I'll use this as my "model" except with the big time personal issues.
Out of curiousity, what story would YOU want the people to c?
Most of us liked it. I didn't, heh. Rocky wasn't about boxing per se ; it was about making something of yourself, giving it your all & fighting despite the odds. The Wrestler could have been about 'It's never too late' had he lived in the match with Ayatollah, given a retirement speech, then moved on with his life. Had he not only thought of himself, he'd still be alive to maybe move on to a new life with the former stripper & fix the relationship with his daughter. I'd have preferred that
AH!! that would've been good. I'll see it myself. But give credit
I never expected ANY wrestling movie to be a critically acclaimed film. Too bad it isn't what most people were looking for.
for me, I want to do a movie that pretty much bashes the WWE XD
two stars: one's a technical wrestler and the other's a showman. one of them will get the push, the other, will get the boot. take a guess who? And the story follows from there. whatdayathink about that?
Yes, Rourke was a boxer. What I mean by "He WAS a wrestler" was that he totally & realistically portrayed one. It'd be like if I said about Naked Gun, "Leslie Nielsen WAS a cop!" heh. Anyway, I don't see why an oscar-worthy wrestling movie MUST have some drawbacks, but obviously the Academy, in a rare good move, agreed with me as it didn't receive a Best Picture nomination, as it shouldn't have. Rourke, I agree. Tomei? Eh, for her tits alone, fine. But not the movie itself by far
if there'sone thing I've learned when the Oscars didn't give a nomination for Best Picture to Dreamgirls, and not give a Best Animated Feature nomination to the Simpsons movie and to fuckin Surfs Up, is that the Oscars are just as bs as WWE. Except for the fact the WWE bs their stuff deliberately!! XD
actually, comparing to the other nombinations, I wished the wrestler DID get a best picture nombination, I mean, what the hell's the Reader?? and teh Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Honestly, both of those noms had a lower critcs rating than the Wrestler itself (which suprised me for damn sure) and now hearing it from YOUR perspective, I got to see the movie, just to clarify.
But one thing's for damn sure....
THE DARK KNIGHT SHOULD'VE GOT A NOMINATION FOR BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY!!
I see where you guys are coming from, but I must say I really really enjoyed this movie. It had great characters, some good acting, and a really engaging story. As for the production quality, I maintain that a movie doesn't have to have Spielberg's budget to be enjoyable. Overall, its a great movie and I would recommend it to anyone
Oh, and I forgot to mention the ending. I can't compare it to The Sopranos because with the Sopranos you were left thinking "what the hell is happening??!!!" whereas with this movie I think it is pretty obvious what the ending would be in spite of it not actually being shown. Sometimes not showing something in a movie is the better solution, and I think this is one of those times.
I disagree. I do think, like you, that the implication is obvious(That he died), but I think after investing an hour & a half in this character, we have a right to know for sure. Because as it is, it felt like a robbery. I don't think this is one of the times where not showing something is the better solution because we have a right to know. I think the part where we draw our own conclusions should be after i.e. If he lived, we conclude how he lived his life. If he died, we ask why.
Yeah I get what you mean. I just figured that the implied ending was more impactful than just showing Randy dead in the ring. Or maybe not, I dunno you raise a good point. I'm starting to think your way would have worked really well too hehe, but only if done correctly
No, a movie certainly doesn't need a Spielberg budget to be enjoyable, but I'd like to be able to SEE the things I'm supposed to, heh. They could have at least gotten a steady cam for those "walking behind" shots he loved so much. I actually didn't even go in to detail about the other things I didn't like about the movie(the jump cuts, the dialogue, the daughter storyline, etc.). What's funny is I find a lot more people didn't like it than I thought, even if most do
Yeah the movie certainly could have done with SOME production upgrades, but nonetheless I don't think it took away much from the story, which it appears I enjoyed a lot more than you hehe. To each his own, right? But yeah I know what you mean, a surprising number of people seem to dislike it
I too founf that ending to be stupid, and pretentious. F#@$, why do people gotta come up with some kind of BULL$#!T like "The ending can be ever it is that you wanted to be", and "That ending was great. You don't know what you're talking about. Go back to mainstream movies". It's people like this why The Dark Knight got a huge snubb for best picture.
I'll admit, I did like the movie. However, there where some big flaws with it.
That ending was one of my biggest flaws. I felt that with the whole "He of who we do not speak off" situation, Darren decided to take advantage of this concept about wrestling, and just go with it. I like Aronofsky, and like I said, I did like this film, but it wasn't all that great either.
I think that what's leading up to the hype of this movie is, like what you said, Mickey Rourke's comeback. That's the whole point of thise movie. This film wasn't really about wrestling, though it was more about story wise. "Beyond the Mat" is way better though.
Oh, and the Triple H pinning Rourke joke is HY-larious.
Also, you gotta give it to Vince for jumping on the band-wagon, and promoting the film after seeing it, and not liking it. that was HY-larious too.
Also, I think the movie "Half Nelson" had a bit more surprior ending than "The Wrestler". I think that an ending like that would have worked better, but instead, Aronofsky decided to pull off an "No Country For Old Men", pretentious ending to get nominated for an naked golden man statue. Maybe they should have given him Goldust.
Oh no, you ruined No Country For Old Men for me! heh, I love Tommy Lee Jones but I haven't see it yet, so tell me no more! :) I never heard of Half Nelson though, I'll have to look that up
Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I believe the ending of "No Country for Old Men" was taken directly from the book it is based on. The Coen brothers didn
The movie was good, but not necessarily great.I wish that The Ram would have had a happier ending with his estranged daughter, which would have been a better suited one than him returning to the pro ranks. It was most definitely a realistic portrayal of life on the indy circuit as a pro wrestler. No Holds Barred was a total bomb at the box office in 1989 and way too polished!

Wreslter lost to Milk for best actor
RandomMindz 2 years ago
It's really no one's fault but Mickey Rourke's for losing. He burned a lot of bridges when he was younger and it may be a flawed system but the people who vote are the same people he pissed off when he was younger. At least he lost to a friend and one of the few people that still believed in him during his lowest points.
-Chris, Wrestling Roundtable

Ironically enough, I long predicted that the academy would rather have a....gay film win an award over a wrestling film
I don't give a damn about Rourke or the guy who played in Milk.
As far as I am concerned, this is one of the reasons if I ever become a directory (please god!!) I will make getting an Oscar my least priority!!

Even if someone didnt like this film be glad and happy because as we all know it could have been far far worse. I thought it was ok but would not watch it again. As for a come back sin city?
helpmedie91111 3 years ago
Sin City wasn't really a come back but more of a return to mainstream films. Mickey Rourke really never went away, he was doing crappy straight-to-video movies for years and had bit parts in a few indie films like Buffalo '66 and The Pledge. He has been in several other well-known movies in the past few years like Once Upon A Time In Mexico and Domino but none of them were starring roles and no one was talking about him after they had seen them.
-Chris, Wrestling Roundtable
ChrisRoundTable 2 years ago
True Chis mate, but everyone said come back film! He's in lot's of film's some looked up in IMDB, but that phrase come back kinda bothered me. Sin city grossed £158 mill world wide. The wrestler made £18mill so far I'm told you may correct me that's cool. So making £158 to £18 isnt a come back? I disagree but I still love your show and all the work you all do. And people were talking about Domino, just in a really bad way. Damn you Keira Knightley! Look forward to the next show man J
helpmedie91111 2 years ago
I understand what you're saying and you are right about the money. Sin City was definitely the more popular of the two but he pretty unrecognizable under all that make-up and he was a part of a large ensemble cast. Can we agree on this being his comeback to starring roles?

Whats Wrong With CZW? Does It Not Remind You Of The Original ECW?
thelagacy08 3 years ago
No, CZW overuses gimmick matches, unlike the old ECW. They depend too much on deathmatches and not enough on technical matches. At least ECW had the occasional Oldf School like technical match in between the hardcore shit and the spotfests. I don't have a problem with CZW's talent, but the booking is bad. Wrestling matches are supposed to tell stories and gimmick matches are supposed to end feuds. When 99 percent of your matches have a gimmick attached, it takes the specialness out of the match

LawrenceRoundTable 3 years ago
this is stupid, and out of the box, but in my opinion, appropriate
William Regal!
Let's face it, he has one of the best in ring skills in the WWE today! He wrestled since he was 15 years old, was put in the worst gimmicks in the WWE, and has NEVER gain a push for a world title!
a movie like that, ending with the wrestler similar to Regal winning a world title, then retire at the end seems good to me. Long though, but good!
RandomMindz 3 years ago 2
I agree with you about Regal. The Real Man's Man( horrible gimmick.)
WickedNemesis 3 years ago
Oo never seen the gimmick
But now I think about it "gimmick's" not the term I should be looking for. "ANGLE" IS!
and by angle, William Regal had the worst:
Eugene, Pirate Paul Birchill (remember he was dressed as a whench), Mr. McMahon's kiss my ass club, the list goes on!
and he DESERVES A WORLD TITLE REIGN
if all else fails, he may get one reign at TNA LOL at least THEY know good talent when they see it!!

All:
What would you define as the ideal movie about wrestling? To me, its not much different then the definitive wrestling storyline: take elements of the real, the ordinary, the extraordinary, have a tragic flaw, a comeback (everyone loves a comeback) and a triumphant ending. I don't mean sugar and ice cream Russians cheering Rocky ending...but something that establishes hope. Afterall, Wrestling and Wrestling fans have been through so much (the last 4 years alone) and we still watch and hope!

cforte926 3 years ago

RandomMindz 3 years ago
As I mentioned on the show, The Wrestler can open up a lot more eyes on how the wrestling industry works for future wrestlers. More so than the Benoit situation because not only was this a visual story but people are so hard headed they didn't wanna believe Benoit was a murderer thus continuing to chant his name at WWE events. Hopefully indy wrestlers now will have another career choice as a back up plan to avoid being like Randy the Ram.
-Rodney, Wrestling Roundtable
leconter 3 years ago

RandomMindz 3 years ago

And correct me if I am wrong, but I think Rourke was a boxer not a wrestler
RandomMindz 3 years ago
Yes, Rourke was a boxer. What I mean by "He WAS a wrestler" was that he totally & realistically portrayed one. It'd be like if I said about Naked Gun, "Leslie Nielsen WAS a cop!" heh. Anyway, I don't see why an oscar-worthy wrestling movie MUST have some drawbacks, but obviously the Academy, in a rare good move, agreed with me as it didn't receive a Best Picture nomination, as it shouldn't have. Rourke, I agree. Tomei? Eh, for her tits alone, fine. But not the movie itself by far

actually, comparing to the other nombinations, I wished the wrestler DID get a best picture nombination, I mean, what the hell's the Reader?? and teh Curious Case of Benjamin Button.
RandomMindz 3 years ago
I see where you guys are coming from, but I must say I really really enjoyed this movie. It had great characters, some good acting, and a really engaging story. As for the production quality, I maintain that a movie doesn't have to have Spielberg's budget to be enjoyable. Overall, its a great movie and I would recommend it to anyone
ejavoric 3 years ago
Oh, and I forgot to mention the ending. I can't compare it to The Sopranos because with the Sopranos you were left thinking "what the hell is happening??!!!" whereas with this movie I think it is pretty obvious what the ending would be in spite of it not actually being shown. Sometimes not showing something in a movie is the better solution, and I think this is one of those times.
ejavoric 3 years ago
-E
WrestlingRoundtable 3 years ago
Yeah I get what you mean. I just figured that the implied ending was more impactful than just showing Randy dead in the ring. Or maybe not, I dunno you raise a good point. I'm starting to think your way would have worked really well too hehe, but only if done correctly
ejavoric 3 years ago
No, a movie certainly doesn't need a Spielberg budget to be enjoyable, but I'd like to be able to SEE the things I'm supposed to, heh. They could have at least gotten a steady cam for those "walking behind" shots he loved so much. I actually didn't even go in to detail about the other things I didn't like about the movie(the jump cuts, the dialogue, the daughter storyline, etc.). What's funny is I find a lot more people didn't like it than I thought, even if most do

Just sayin'

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I believe the ending of "No Country for Old Men" was taken directly from the book it is based on. The Coen brothers didn
