Just might as wall accept that the only thing private anymore exists only between your two ears. As long as my phone can point me to the nearest latte on sale while I tweet my location to all my "friends" on Farmville......I guess I'm happy.
Here’s an example of the Social Graph API in action – powering a visualisation that shows connections between people who have recently tweeted a particular term or hashtag: blog.ouseful.info/2011/04/12/using-protovis-to-visualise-connections-between-people-tweeting-a-particular-term/
if anything, I'd say it might propagate a bit more slowly for one glaring reason-I don't see a link to Register/Declare URLs 'on' the social graph!...but I'm looking...
@bbyrd009b This is not a product. This is an API for software developers. This is a technical IT video and doesn't mean nothing to normal users, really.
you guys are nuts-this is how The World of Tomorrow is going to function; and at the very least, this application is going to become pivotal, I'd say- I WANT that 7 degrees of separation to become transparent- and you do, too! This will make it happen- where do i sign up?
As an official video from Google, I would expect it to be in a proper format. Unfortunately, it looks like somewhere along the line, the video got compressed from widescreen to 4:3.
Is this social graph app employed anywhere yet where it can be used by the everyday guy or is it simply in development - the closest thing I've seen is an app called Rapleaf. I think there may be another one called Volcanic.
A need exists to enclose this type of info in a secure and controlled manner. This will become a Digital DNA of your relationships, even though we can, we probably shouldn't...
Orwell's "1984" is all around us, the ability to track or locate an individual should not be abused.
Google will be responsible legally should negative experiences occur...
This is a great idea, it allows better access for the users to network together, as well as allowing the Google search bots to easily index all this information. But somehow after seeing this video I heard the Portal voice in the background say, "Are you still there?"
I would love to suck my orkut or myspace into twitter. That would be pretty bad ass. Its so much "paperwork" time to friend all the people you might be interested in and this would be a huge time saver.
Umm, dstodril id thieves are all around dude. Perhaps if you are so freaked out by them, don't go on the internet at all. Also if you have a bank account, they've hacked those too, as is the case with Barclays chairman Marcus Agius, so don't put your money in a bank, don't use credit cards. Don't ever use your real name not only on the internet but everywhere you go, right?
@estodril All this information is already there and identity thieves and big brother governments already use it. What is being proposed here is a common, standard API so that *we*, the good developers doing really usefull apps like Twitter, Facebook, Orkut, MySpace, etc. can use it too to comunicate better with each other and show that widget to our users that says: "You probably know this guy. Why don't you follow him too".
Cool idea.. although it kind of overlooks the main problem with modern social networks- superficial friendships/SNR. Most people don't need more "friends", they need relevant contacts. Seeing social science reduced to this level of automation is kind of mind numbing.
I absolutely agree. Until another application builds or uses this type of link between sites, I don't see people actively invest efforts into a new networking site unless it serves a completely different purpose entirely...i.e. LinkedIn (which come to think of it, most people *shouldn't* link to their facebook page).

@Benz145 Probably was just filmed in 4:3 - not much you can do after that point.

Good idea. Next step: Learn how to use the word "myself" - it's not just for when you have to pick between "me" and "I" and can't be bothered...

i love the laid back, whiteboard style. future google tutorial makers take note.
this is more of a 'why XFN is cool' video than anything else. it says nothing about how the google social graph API works or is supposed to be used.

Not if your other social networks allow your page to be completely private. That's where privacy comes in.
