@deamonfate The room's ceiling height is 2 blocks. A cake's height is a slab's height (half a block). A minecraft NPC's height is 2 blocks. If you were to try to stand on the cakes you wouldn't be able to because your head would go through the ceiling which you can't do in minecraft. Hope this makes more sense to you but a better way it to hit the lever again which opens the door again and stops the lava from flowing. You can also be in front of a dispenser and place a cake in the middle...
