  • what is that finale note?

  • increible, que gran voz, una de las mejores versiones que he escuchado

  • One of the best I've seen so far. She's soo cute! :)♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

  • Oh it's fantastic! I saw her do this at the Met in the 80's in a very lavish production, and it's still one of the very best things I ever saw on that stage. To sing at such a high level and perform such mechanical moves at the same is a real feat. Brava!

  • It is so sad that we lost her to cancer :(

  • nice acting,

not to sure about the singing! :|

  • I'm going to blame that on the sound quality. She sounds like she's very good. Although the outfit kinda scares me but I love twisted versions of this song.

  • I think they went waaaaay overboard with the the automaton stuff. Hoffman has to still believe that she's a real person.

  • this really impressed me. she is completely mechanical...and check out her feet and hands!! they are so funny. she obviously really studied dolls. this is a performance I love because I respect her so much for her acting.

  • It has ALWAYS been the custom to add things, to make it unique for each singer. Especially the second time around.

Ruth was one of the great true Bel canto singers. She and Kraus together were wonderful. She knew her voice type and stuck with it. No getting her to take on too heavy a role.

And, yes she did study those mechanical dolls. If you notice there is not a phrase without some small movement, just as would be the case if she were a wind up singing doll!

  • THERE IS NO NEED IMPROVISE HOFFMAN. what is she doing???????????????

  • fantastica!

  • she sings like a broken doll almost all the time

  • She is a real doll. BRAVA 5/5

  • As for her voice, no heaviness there at all. She has a lovely, bright coloratura voice and that squeak was obviously intentional considering Olympia is a mechanical doll. This piece is perfect for her voice.

  • Wow! Incredible performance. Not only does she sing it well, but she's obviously done her homework on the behaviour of the old mechanical dolls. Not only can this woman sing, she can act. I've never seen this aria done this well before. Even the other actors onstage clapped for her when she was finished.

  • her voice is heavy and with some kind of witch like sound to sing this aria

But im sure that she's good with the queen of the night role

  • Dessay's version is too drawn out and ponderous. Welting's is clean and bright. And much more entertaining to watch.

  • amen.

  • I hate when people do repertoire that is not right for their voice...

  • Why do you say that is not right for her voice???

  • In my score it's a do diaz!

  • But you're absolutely right, this aria is a semitone higher than my score, so it's an Eb (which does not make the aria any easier... :))

  • In my score it's a D...

  • because the is too version of the aria the normal one high and another version 1 tone lower!!

  • Nathalsa, that squeak was quite supposed to happen... It's a high d and is written.

  • Well, actually, the note is an Eb, not a D. But the person who called it a squeak is not far wrong. It did not resonate in her voice. But she makes up for it with her extra, slow triplet, that awesome huge Eb-F-Eb one, that begins the series of triplets, right near the end.

  • bravissima

  • don't you have the sutherland's version of this aria?

  • i prefer her lucia di lammermoor

  • Is it just me, or was that little slip/squeak thing not supposed to happen at 2:38?

  • Note perfette!!!

  • Actually hers was the begining of the kinds of dolls we see today. Back in the day her doll would stop the show. Literally ovations lastings up to a half hour.

  • hey!! it was ok.but i loved more the doll song from luciana serra.i was watching it one week ago but now i cant find it .maybe someone knows???

  • Thanks for sharing. I had the great privilege of hearing her sing an astonishing Zerbinetta at San Francisco Opera back in the 70's.

  • Ruth passed away a few years ago I believe. This was not her best role. I love hearing her sing "come per me sereno"....lovely and better suited to her voice.

  • Definetly not the best olympia, but shes OK.
