when Ennis said "Jack, I swear" that was him saying " JACK I DO LOVE YOU, I SWEAR" right after they were about to leave the summer job, Ennis didn't open up his true feelings towards Jack. then again when he heard Ennis got Divorce. His refusal to admit his true feelings was his downfall towards the end. When Ennis was eating a pie by himself,by that point you know thats what his life is going to be... the movie is very symbolic

In the original WRITTEN story it reads - Jack, I swear -- he said, though Jack had never asked him to swear anything and was himself not the swearing kind.

The film ends there, but there's more written. "Around that time Jack began to appear in his dreams... " & a bit more.
