Looks like fun, my friend at work did these jumps for a long time. All hard landing broke his leg in three places after doing it for so many years, he said it was the best time of his life.
Lemm, I had the luck of being basically both Airborne and Air Assault, Blackhawk Crewchief in the 82nd. This capability has to be maintained. Usage low, yes. That's why there is only 1 Airborne Division (not discounting the other units). There will still be times when a massive Infantry Airborne drop is required to secure an Airfield for follow on forces (C-130, Blackhawks, etc.). Thank God we haven't needed it in years. But we have to always have the option.
Time to phase this out and stick with Air Assault. Airborne is never used anymore. The most recent combat jump was in 2003 into BIAP by 173rd boys outta Italy....Since then nothin
Airborne infantry are a vital tactical force that could be deploy anywhere in the world on short notice. That the reason why they still around. No matter how few or how much jump sign world war 2 the reason they are paratrooper is spirit of de corp. Airborne will fight on to the objective although he a lone trooper. Hooah
@lemm05 You're correct the 173d did that jump in 2003. Units from the 82nd (508th Inf) also did a combat jump in Afghanistan with the Rangers in 2005 and 1st Brigade of the 82d did a jump in Iraq in 2010 as a show of force. The US Army won't do phase out Airborne any more than they will phase out the Field Artillery.
My husband is Airborne Infantry, OSUT is 14 weeks, Jump School follows. Jump school is 3 weeks long.. You have to take a PT test right after graduation or the following day at the 17 year old range.
Anthony, whats your MOS? Only guys we had in our jump class was SF, Ranger, Officers, and Infantry.. How did you get Airborne and going to Fort Jackson?
well idk if it is exactly 3 weeks bcuz i just enlisted and i got infantry and airborne on my contract...LUCKILY!!! it was one of the last infantry and airborne positions open but anyways i will be in osut for 14 weeks instead of 9 basic and 14 ait but airborne is only gonna be 13 days im not really sure why...bcuz i was expecting 3 weeks but they said i will be there for 13 days
I'm kind of confused. I want to be the guys who walk around downtown Iraq with the full gear and everything ( I believe thats Infantry). But I hear from people you can also be an Infantry Airborne. What exactly does that mean if you are Airborne? And would you recommend being Infantry?
infantry airborne means instead of walking onto the battlefield like regular troops, you parachute in from a helicopter or airplane. same thing pretty much except for the parachute part. you get to have all the same gear and everything.
So I could join the Army and become an Infantryman and those are the guys who basically just patrol the streets and stuff right? Basic combat guys? And then I could go to Airborne training and just become Airborne certified and still be an infantryman?
I don't think you can go back to normal infantry after airborne training. I think your put in a special airborne unit like the 101st or 82nd. But my friends dad is in the 101st and hes in afghanistan right now.
@ionking100 you can. just reenlist for another duty station. you will still be airborne qualified but not in an airborne unit. there are lots of soldiers that are airborne qualified but not in the 82nd or 173rd. the 101st is no longer true airborne they are air assault
JohnR173, to answer ur question, yes if you are trained to be infantry than you will patrol the streets but airborne infantry just means you get to the battle field a different way.....and remember not everybody gets to be infantry bcuz you have to pass all physical requirements, and you cant have any eyesight problems like colorblindness bcuz i know a guy who had his heart set that he was gonna be airborne but he cant see the color green and he is now human resources
airborne school is just a school that teaches basics of jumping out of planes. getting past the school and hanging out in a bar showing your wings to your buddies is lame.
doing time in an airborne unit, as a paratrooper is different. Airborne units are generally very competitive and attract a wilder breed.
Our Navy's jump school is 3-4 weeks to do both static line AND freefall. No offense to the British but either they're slow learners (which I doubt) or for that length of time I be better off learning to fly the plane myself than jumping out of it.
Only other reason it'd be that long is if they did a LOT more than just basic static and freefall.
hey guys US airbourne looks wicked n if i was a yank ide join them defo! ime gonna be joinin the british parachute regiment which is a hell of alot longer. 5 months of physical training. then 5 months of parachute training. and 2 months break.

This is terrible, are they really going to have time to repeat all this when the plane is getting fired on? Terrible training.

well its worked since WW2 dude, every heard of the 101st in Normandy, similiar training.
